I find "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" by Neil Gaiman helps me out of a reading slump--- short, magic, dark, with some wonderful characters. I loved "Piranesi", exploring the world, but without giving spoilers, the ending really hit me hard, what it suggests. In many ways, I found it profoundly sad--- which is not a bad thing at all, and is not meant to keep anyone from reading this brilliant book...

I really want to recommend "This Is How You Lose the Time War" by Amal el-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. THAT is an amazing book, which still gives me goosebumps. I've never read something similar in my life.

I can confirm Piranesi is perfect for getting out of a reading slump. I had one at the beginning of this month and eventually decided to reread Piranesi, as it is one of my all-time favourites, and it definitely helped.

    piranesi sounds right up
    my alley: I love mysteries
    especially with diary entries,
I'll look for your video about it,
    and human kind has probably
the injection of hope I need,
    times are scary right now.
    also, I wish I didn't know the
    ending for roger ackroyd!
    thank you so much for
    your kind suggestions! 💐

Ohmygiddy if you enjoy the history of language and haven't read it already, I HIGHLY recommend Wordslut by Amanda Montell. It's tagline is 'a feminist guide to taking back the English Language'. .. I genuinely think every one should read it!

I absolutely love Piranesi. The only thing that I regret after reading it is that I don't know more people who have done the same. Especially right after I finished it, I was so eager to talk about my interpretation with others, but didn't know anyone in person who'd also read it.

I would recommend the Murderbot Diaries for a reading slump ❤ They're funny, relatable, short and fast paced. They're great. (Unless you don't like Murderbot as a character or narrator then... yeah they won't be for you 😅)
Murderbot seems to be similar recommendation to Monk and robot, if you've already read that one. I think I will be picking the Monk and Robot books because I've been in such a reading slump this year 😢 I already had heard about them but this video put them higher in my tbr for sure. Thank youA

the murder of roger ackroyd is BY FAR the best mystery book i have ever read. unfortunately it was my first AC book and so i haven't enjoyed any of her other ones at all.

I started getting out my last reading slump by reading Agatha Christie books. I then came across your wonderful channel and I got Scalzi's The Kaiju Preservation Society which I loved! Old Man's War came next and then on to Stuart Turton. Just like that I'm out of my reading slump and trying out different genres and authors. Thank you so much for your recommendations, Willow!

Oh I need to read Human Kind immediately, you've really sold it!!!
Also the way you described it reminded me a lot of another non-fiction book I really enjoyed called 'How Compassion Made Us Human: the Evolutionary Origins of Tenderness, Trust and Morality' by Penny Spikins. It looks at very early prehistory with what sounds like a similarly heartwarming outlook to Human Kind! (I read it for class while studying archaeology, but found it so much more readable/accessible and enjoyable than most more "academic" texts so would recommend to anyone interested more casually :))

  • @ReinReads

Just ordered Human Kind. It’s the kind of thing I really need right now. Thanks.
I would add Kindred to this list. While the themes are heavier it has amazing pacing, starting at the end and then going back to tell of how we got there.

Physically, Eric LaRocca helped me through my post-college reading slump by reading his two short story/novella collections during the travel there and back while visiting my partner. But otherwise, another big recommendation from me is listening to audiobooks - They are so much more accessible and easy to get into in our modern landscape as a full-time worker who when I have time is frequently too tired. So while I cannot always read physically, even if it's what I prefer to do, who says I'm not still reading? And reading more than I've been able to in a while! And I've still got my physicals for when I can read them and extra special releases (Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay got the second my library had it in stock as my most anticipated release of the year)

For me it wuld usually be either something light and funny or a crime novel. As I read in two foreig language if I have a blockage I go back to reading in Polish. It already takes a burden of my brain and helps me enjoy my reading process more. There are some nice slavic fantasy novels and short story collection written by female authors right now, I use them as a relaxing brake.

In the words of Taylor Swift, it’s me, hi, I’m the problem it’s me….because…..oh I cannot get into Piranesi and it put me in a slump lol, however I totally trust you Willow, so I will continue with it. No doubt it will end up being my fave book of the year. 💜💜💜💜💜

First, thank you for reminding me about Pinaresi, i really need to finally get to this book it's been on my tbr for a while.
For me, what usually gets me out of a readind slump is either reading a manga or switching the language in which i'm reading. I primarly read in english (both for pleasure and for my uni classes), so when i'm feeling like i'm about to get into major reading slump I would switch back to my native polish or try to read manga in japanese (it usually takes a while to read a full volume but still give my brain a good reset).

Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary's books are my go-to slump killers, specifically the excellently narrated audiobooks. It's funny how they made their way around one of my friendship groups as the "if you're feeling rubbish, slumpy, or need a pick-me-up" set of books, but at this point we have a shared nostalgia for them all and it's gratifying to see them become someone else's comfort read due to that recommendation.
How do you stop yourself from making them your rainy day reads as a result, waiting for the day when you feel you really need them? I watched someone's recommendation video where they talked about not wanting to read the two Agatha Christie books they had left because they didn't want them to be over. It must be even more difficult as a content creator, if you feel pushed to focus more on new releases...

  • @thelibrarianofalexandria6200

Gaston Dorren is a deutch writer, he has two non fiction on langyages. I prefer his book, Lingo about european languages, but his book Babel on laguages around the world is good too. WhenI am in a slump I often reread a book. I would also recomend shoter books, like novellas. Gail carriger has some great novellas.

  • @nitzeart
    @nitzeart Před 11 dny

You should really read El Aleph by Jorge Luis Borges or The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I think those two are more successful iterations than Piranesi of a book with a laberyhtian and philosophical setting!

  • @miyayume_eclectic_dream

I tryed Piranesy and the repetition will never put me our of the slump but was drugging me in.
The Kaiju PS is the right one to pick me up: so many pop-culture reference that are hilarious and believe me Kaijus are interesting. Writting may not grab you but the story will.
Agatha Cristy is really engaging good choise.
    🙈 I still haven't read Backy Chambers. I did read a chapter.

  • @nitzeart
    @nitzeart Před 11 dny

Well, I don't love Piranesi 🖐😅 I don't hate it but I found the discussions shallow and not very compelling. The ideas of where the story was going in my mind were so much more interesting than what we got in the end. That might just be on me, but I have heard at least someone else agree (a booktuber, Elliot Brooks). We both thought it was going to be deeper and delve even more on mental health, academia, identity, etc. But it was all very ...meh.
I don't think is badly written either, the prose was great. The mystery kept me reading too. I didn't love the characters, and did not enjoy the protagonist's thinking patterns, but I can appreciate it as a character study. I didn't hate the book it just wasn't a favourite. Sadly. I was really excited for this book 😢
Now you know two people who disliked Piranesi 😂

An interesting list of book recommendations. However, I have to disagree with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, I had to read this book as part of a uni crime fiction course and did not like it at all. Some say it’s Christie’s weakest book. I have other Christies and really should read some more of her work. But TMRA left me very grumpy about why it had been selected for the course when there are much better written books
What other books by Christie would you recommend? I am eager to try her again despite not liking Roger Ackroyd.
