A tremendously less amount of character and charm. No tablet screen can ever equal great gauges. The original is still incredible, and at that price a stunningly amazing deal.
BTW for $ 1500 you can get a Tablet screen ,it's a tesla style screen from Merge screen
A $200,000 luxury car will have luxury costing repairs whether it’s brand new or 20 years old.
Brand new does come with a warranty... But unless you can work on it yourself (even then), if you couldn't afford to run it new, you probably can't afford to run one of these used.
This is what people forget sometimes.
Warranty makes new cars very cheap to run in repair terms, beyond consumables

I have a 2006 Flying Spur - the GT's big brother. I suspect, like your findings, with the old and new GT's, the Spur is a very different beast now than my 13 year old version. That said, I love it mine. Sure, there are things I'd like that the new one has but that doesn't spoli my enjoyment every time I take it out. Its still a stunning car. Thanks the peice, really enjoyed it.
New version steering wheel in the old one makes a massive difference to interior,I've seen it on a few.

Ciao Giacomo. Must have taken some bravery to drive the new one, being the owner of the older one. At least you can proudky say you have a Bentley and it's still a beautiful car....that's had its deprecation so no stress there. Sometimes less really is more. My mamma (from Milano) keeps reminding me that happiness is not having what you want but wanting what you have. Love your clips, grazie mille😊
The new Bentley could be mistaken for an Audi A8 if you could only view the interior. Also, the original models were far nicer to look at, more 'brutal' looking. If they could put the modern technology of the new car into the styling of the old car it would be perfect.
The interior is miles ahead the older model. The older Model hat a Touareg steering wheel and you could not fit people in the back.
The cost of the New Bentley would buy me a few of my dream cars ...... Lovely car but I couldn't drop £185k on it!

All subjective but I prefer the looks of the older car...especially the front end where the new car is in your face with the grills.
Your car certainly presents well against the new car, given the difference in age and price. The front of the new one looks a bit Ford Focus boy racer, something of a cock up, which is a let down. Interesting to see the ball vents on the dash, I remember making a pressure die casting tool for these same vents for RR, that was in 1984!
Your conclusion is confirming a trend I have seen for years, Character and Charm is being replaced with Flash and Bling.

I rather like the exterior of your car. The interior of the Continental GT is just drop dead gorgeous.
Just bought one - a 2023 demonstrator with 1,500 miles on the clock from Skoda dealership. Paid £26.5K. Very happy. Not a big fan of these infotainment systems, but massive boot, fast car and loads of room for a six-foot + person like myself.
New Bentley is miles ahead of old model. The cabin especially a huge step up in design and luxury feel.
To be expected after almost 20 years, I mean just do the same with the likes of Aston Martin etc - same story 👍

A car on my list I mean what else can you buy with that luxury for that price.If you look and take your time you can find one that's been loved and what a car.

I think your earlier Bentley looks better than the newer model Jack, something about the grille treatment, and those "el cheapo" mag wheels. No mate, it might ride a bit more "sporty" but yours is the best and at the price an absolute bargain.
Thd main issue with your car is that it doesn't cost 185000 pounds.
Whitch for a luxury car, is pretty unforgivable.

I think I'd prefer the £18,000 car and have the £167,000 difference in the bank. Obviously, the new car is better... but worth £167,000 more? I'm not so sure! (I had one exactly like yours and loved it, I haven't driven a new one but I stand by my comment!).

That's the prettiest cockpit I've seen for a long time. If the new one falls to £18K that's £167K / 18 years = about £9,300 depreciation per year. But I can still see why you would buy one.

Lovely and interesting machines. The beauty of being a car guy however is the ability to enjoy a much 'lesser' machine every bit as much.
Bound to get more "tech" in the newer car but personally I think it can result in dashboards lighting up like TV "cartoon" screen and I prefer the quality analogue dials. In terms of general outside appearance, I also prefer the older car - many of the new prestige cars have been "blinged up" to appeal to the new, large Asian markets.
I totally agree, the latest Mercs etc, look like discos with cheap jewellery inside! 🤣 if I were to guy one of these (old model) I would be quite happy NOT to have the latest ‘screen tech’ in it as it would be a weekend car for getting away from the stresses of the modern digital world! 😊👍
Jack - you might like to have the air suspension struts refurbished and rubber suspension components changed and new tyres if over 5 years old. Total was not cheap at circa £3k but transformed my car so actually was value for money…
I do prefer your older interior style. Not a fan of very light interior colours.

Hi Jack. Hypermiling by coasting in neutral? When coasting in neutral, the engine is still idling. If coasting on the over-run, i.e. still in gear, the fuel injection is shut off, so there is zero flow and your consumption will improve, accordingly. I hope this helps.
I think the main use for paddles is to quickly drop a gear or two as you approach a bend or tight corner. The car isn't Marvo The Mind Reader so it's you who will see a bend which will benefit from a lower gear. Engine braking and then power out in the right gear without the car's gearbox shuffling around trying to work out what's happening.
Automatic gearboxes get confused by fast cornering because they're mainly based on the accelerator input. So they can change gears up or down at the worst possible time. Manual override into fast turns is basically essential . Once you are past the apex, sure, let the car do its own thing.
i bet the new car does play marvo, using the sat-nav + abs info, it WILL know what's around the next corner...

For me it is the car with the physical HVAC conctrols. You're right about the drawing room interior feels and looks better to me.

Incredible value for money one of those Jack and I can see why you took the risk. I imagine they aren’t that frail and most of the horror stories are from the States where inspections are much less onerous than our MOTs and many have done mega miles with scant maintenance. I like light interiors and the revolving satnav come clock section is super cool in the new one but nevertheless you’re right that the original looks classier and the sculpted dash, wood and Mulliner seats make it seem like an old school gentleman’s carriage… I’m tempted Jack very tempted😂

Here is why I like my 2008 GT which I bought 3 years ago like so much more
I could afford it while the new one with $ 300 K is way out of my league .
So I "suffer" to drive my old one and most people can't tell the difference anyway
With the greatest respect, I’ve never been too enamoured with the “VW” Bentley models , the last Bentley Continental I liked was the Crewe made car from the mid to late 1990s . However , I actually think your older car Jack, is far better looking than the current model . In that department you’ve just saved £162,000 ! Bonus.

I hadn't realised just how much larger the latest Continental GT is; it dwarfs the original model and I always thought that was a big car.
I am not a huge fan of the 'new' Bentley's, footballers cars I think. However it is good to see some improvements. I do think it is a little unfair to compare performance in that your car may well have 'lost' a few horses over the years. Taking that into account though you might expect some 'upgrades'. I think the dash may be a bit distracting but the interior is overall an improvement. A good review Jack, thank you.I'll go and empty my piggy bank!!! 😁👍👍

It’s pretty obvious that £18.000 for your car is simply a commercial value of an object and has nothing to do with its intrinsic value. It’s a steal at that price and as long as nothing disastrous happens is obviously the “best buy” unless “money is no object” and you are filthy rich in which case it could be annoying to see the plebs using an exclusive car that becomes accessible to the layman.
I actually prefer the looks of the grill and headlights of the older model.
I suppose VW will have seeded some programmed obsolescence into their models so as to keep them exclusive and reliable when new and perhaps become full of silly (snd expensive) faults to fix at a certain point. I hope not (for you !)

I'm not sure I believe that MPG indicator on the new Bentley. 6 litres, twin supercharger, lost count how many horsepowers and 25mpg.... it might have something to do with when you first reset the indicators or something like that (after filling the tank etc), in my experience (in my own car, not a Bentley!) it too gives unreal numbers as well, until things settle and average themselves out.

From what i have seen on your video, i agree with you and I do not like the white interior of the modern Bentley you tested, all tho, the option of a dark interior is probably available.
The older car has nice wheels and better external design to my eyes. The new steering wheel says "high class knocking-shop" rather than "sport", but I suppose they know their market.

Excellent presentation, as usual. You made some very good points and the differences are rather subtle. From my point of view; that is, coming from a bloke that would NEVER be able to afford not even a brand-new Bentley but a BMW (LOL), your Bentley GT 2005 is a wonderful bargain and, notwithstanding the small improvements, at £185.000 the new Bentley is way too expensive compared with that beautiful "oldie". PS: I also agree with you regarding the overall nicer, old-fashioned feeling of the darker interior in the 2005.
I saw a Sirocco with the wheels from a Bentley today !
It was proved on Top Gear, (clarkson said it) that coasting in neutral to save mpg, it pointless.. the engine needs to fuel the motor to keep it running, whereas during engine braking coasting (in gear) the injectors are switched off, until a near idle speed is achieved.

I have a huge spec 2015 (MK2) V8S, which I think you'd find fills the gap between yours and the new. It's vocal when pushing, and the sports exhaust sounds amazing (though at motorway speeds, there's a little background hum from it over the hush). A steady 70mph motorway cruise will get 30mpg - just! The ride, however, is slightly firmer still. Paid a lot more than 18K though!!
As with many cars high end or not, the older ones look better this is one of those occasions
The new Bentley center console ski slope reminds me fo the Jaguar XJS center console, both beautiful designs. The wrap-around aspect is reminiscent of a late 90s Buick Riviera, which was a stand-out feature of that car. The new Bentley exterior styling is much more satisfying also. THe original design was radical and amazing when it came out, but was definitely in need of some updating. After the novelty wore off, it started to look kind of chunky. The new design is much sleeker, more like an F16 than a B52. Well, B52 is a bit harsh, but you get the idea. Maybe someone can come up with a better airplane comparison.

tyre technology has come a long way since your dinosaur was made, that will make a lot of NVH difference
i have noticed more top-end tyres have big square sausages of acoustic foam glued in them, something to think about when renewing tyres perhaps... keep it up young man
I previously had a W12 Continental GT in my showroom collection (2007 era I believe) and I didn't really fall in love with the car.
In fact the 997 era and 996 turbo Porsche attracted me much more so.
Personally I would take the 4.0 V8 as this will be considerably much better on the fuel consumption.
Much as I like both the Bentley Continentals you show, I prefer the Mulliner Bentley Continental a friend's father drove and that I had several trips in, back in 1965.
I just love the exterior of the old model, and the interior of the new one. Sadly, they didn't make the new one light enough. Still too heavy, too big -- my only criticism of the new model.
£180K Bentley ............. all the prestige goes out of the window when an £18K Bentley pulls-up next to it.
The new one might be better Jack, but I'm guessing it's not ten times as good - like the price!
Remember though efficiency shouldn't be confused with economy. For example my 1.0 3 cylinder car produces 67bhp and my V8 4.3 282. Obviously this is around four times the power, fuel consumption is roughly 55 mpg balanced against 25 respectively (both combined). Please correct me if I'm wrong, but to my mind the larger engine appears more efficient but less economical.

Jack, I like the comparison video, but really wish you talked more about what you can do with your car for not much money in order to never think of the new Bentley again. For another 10K pounds, you can drop in a gorgeous big tablet nav screen, modernizing it immensely, and be able to control your temperature and other settings from there. Then you can improve your engine power/response comfortably (although not much is needed, as it's a classy GT after all). And then you can do some exterior trim upgrades (chrome trim around the headlights similar to the new car), and other small things that could turn this car into a long-term keeper. All in all, you've got a great car, but with a little extra investment, it can be an incredibly special car. Thanks again.

BUT how well can/WILL garages actually service, repair and diagnose this vehicle?
Reviews of Bentley dealers are sadly appalling.
Modern cars are notorious for sensors that just can't be fixed/diagnosed etc. And the obsession with weight means plastic engine/similar parts wear out. But can't be properly diagnosed.
I've had horrendous problems with a BMW, meticulously looked after but garages just can't diagnose things. And I know people with awful problems with new M BMW and AMG Mercs.
Old cars were easy to fix. And you could have SOME faith in garages.
But post 2000 or so cars, it gets to a point where they say "could be this, could be that, could be the other". You can end up spending half or 1x or 3x the value of the car and it still ain't fixed.
Manufacturers are tweaking it so it can actually be cheaper to own new! Or rather RENT new. Awful state of affairs but its whats happening esp with premier marques.
I wonder if some modern hi-spec dampers would make a difference to your Bentley?
Hi Jack, Did you compare the brand and type of tyres on each car? I would be blaming your tyres for the road noise rather than the car, tyres also affect ride, if your car has the wrong tyres changing them could transform the car.

Great comparison video Jack on your own Bently GT the interior is much nicer more gentleman's club than a l do prefer the older Rolls-Royce to the newer ones all that wood and leather have you ever thought about reviewing a Toyota Century the V12 one there is a Australian chanel which reviews second hand cars and the conclusion was thst it wss the best car they had reviewed
If I had a choice between the two, I would take the older Bentley every time, the exterior design of the newer Bentley GT, just doesn't do it for me, there is something off about the headlight design on the new GT, and it seems far too wide to me. The old Bentley had more a cohesive design, it looks more compact and sporty and the I loved the way the headlights look as if they are carved out of the metal bodywork. I personally feel that the Bentley Batur should have been the design for the new Bentley GT, either way I wish Bentley well, they are a great brand.
You might find new suspension arms and bushes on your old one help. Still like the front of the old model so much more than the new one. The older cars are such a bargain. Got to ask what else could you buy for £180k?
i like the Bentley gt's, but they could use a bit of lowering(the suspension). just to give it a better stance :-)
My V8S sits 15mm lower and looks so much better for it.

I think I prefer the way the older car looks. You mentioned that the newer car rides better and is more refined but didn't say if it had lost anything in the handling as a result. If it has gained those things at the cost of some feel and handling then the price is too high in my humble opinion. If Bentley are reading this though, don't rush out to change things because of my opinion, I don't think I'll ever be buying one. Even if I had that much money to waste on a car, the Bentley would be so far down the list that I would never get to it. Interesting video though.

I've just been in a year old Continental and tbf that interior makes the old one feel like you're in a Passat. A top of the line Passat, but one nonetheless.

I believe I will be taking the 4.0 saloon. Better on fuel, more classy and elegant, more practical, rarer.
The coupe is great but I have never really fallen in love with it, spent a lot of time with it in my showroom collection and never developed a love affair with that car. It was a £20,000 older Bentley but not really one that I loved.

Jack, what’s your thoughts on the shape old vs new ? I have to say I prefer the old shape, more rounded especially the rear end.. 4 years later and I’m still in morning over selling mine 😕
The old one is definitely better looking one for me. Maybe not the interior as I prefer the brighter trim but otherwise I’d not think twice. The amount of grill space on new car is horrendous and it is not nicely shaped either.
Love new Bentley than old Bentley
I agree that the new one is probably, objectively, an improvement. But, as real Bentleys, both trail far behind a Continental R or even an Arnage. Buy one, if the modern VW interpretation of Bentley appeals to you and you can live with the maintenance and running costs. But if you really want a Bentley, than a Continental R or Arnange is a far more authentic and satisfying eperience.
The downside to the newer car is that the tech will date and it’ll be a whole heap harder (well, impossible) to iodate compared to the older car. You might not like the way the updated screen looks, but it was easy and cost effective and modernises the tech nicely.
Did you have Bentley look your car over like you did with the Merc? What jobs did you have done and was the bill reasonable? Any more jobs on the cards? Not much you can do yourself I would guess.
