    Excellent tips! I have only used sink grids at other people's homes. I liked it at first but then I noticed gunk (with germs and bacteria) builds up underneath and on the rubber covered pegs (or legs). It needs to be scrubbed with brush and it flings all over the sink and sometimes on counter. Also, it is hard to clean sink with grid in there. So, you drip water everywhere when you take it out to clean sink.(unless you take the time to dry it :) ) They are nice, but just wanted people to realize they are no fun to clean.

    Great tips!! ty!!
    For me the #1 item is DRAWERS *get as many drawer bases as possible*.
    Why use (what should be obsolete) door crawl in bases? Then people pay ridiculous amounts to add pull outs which require the doors to be opened to access the pull outs. Awkward. Those pullouts will never be as functional as simply installing the base as drawers.
    The drawer bases with the shallow 1st drawer (even if it is hidden inside a larger top drawer) are fantastic!
    May I suggest a video on *drawer vs plain shelf base* functionality?
    New builds that don't have drawers instead of door bases need to be stopped:-).
    Are the old style door bases still chosen mostly by house flippers (installing for ROI) and/or homeowners who have never lived in a kitchen with drawer bases so they can't grasp what a game changer drawers really are for accessability and space optimization?
    Glad I found your channel.
    Thanks so much!! 0:02

    Modern kitchen here, and we LOVE having zero hardware. Flat cabinet surface makes it super easy to clean, with press open makes it easy to open and close. Also, you don't bump into hardware or get stuck. (Some hardware can cause clothing to get stuck in them)
    Hardware is also just another thing to clean.

    • @jenniferkannapel9450
      @jenniferkannapel9450 Před 6 měsíci +1

      How does the drawer trash overflow faster than a freestanding trash bin? We actually installed a 24" wide trash bin+ recycle bin which are each the size of the freestanding bin we had used before (eliminating 2 big bins on our kitchen floor). When the rubbish gets close to the top the bag is full anyway. The exact same bag that fits in the freestanding bin.

    • @flacadiabla3193
      @flacadiabla3193 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @jenniferkannapel9450
      I wasn't referring to the speed of filling the bins. With a house full of kids, overfilling and just being messy is inevitable with them, but the thing I hated the most is having the wood retain the smell, and how gross it gets in the drawer over the years of use. I personally find it so much easier to just take bins outside to bleach and scrub down, over cleaning the inside drawer.

      We have a standard 400mm/16" drawer line cupboard with bin in the bottom...... brilliant!
      B&Q units so easy clean and my grandkids have no problem in using it properly.
      DIY job with a drawer attached to the base of the door, hinges removed and extendable metal sliders installed to the drawer.
      Large bin with bin liner, hidden away, very clean, o smells, emptied every couple of days, what's not to like

  • @trinaroe5132
    @trinaroe5132 Před 6 měsíci

    The comment that you can’t change from doors to drawers later in base cabinets is not true if you have frameless cabinets. One of the reasons I’m looking at IKEA is the flexibility of changing the “guts” of the cabinet boxes and/or fronts down the road.

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před 6 měsíci

      Trina, you can certainly do that but it would not be the same as a true drawer base as in a drawer base you have a piece of the box (almost like a fixed shelf) behind the section where the drawer faces meet. This is so you do not see a gap as there has to be at least a 1/8" reveal between the drawer faces. Most people wouldn't prefer the gap which is why I say that, but if you're cool with it then you can certainly do that. I wouldn't understand though why you just go for drawers from the start, rather than going through the modification after the fact.

      I used a sink grid for a short time and use one when I visit my daughter. I hate these as I find many things fall through. I'm also the kind of person that likes to add dish detergent to water immediately and swoosh the water with my hands to start the foaming action. I have to wait too long to do this when using the grid! To each his own I guess.

    Why would you put smelly bins in your cupboards

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před rokem +9

      The trash inside of the bin doesn't touch anything but the plastic bag. I'm sure how people handle their trash but If I have something really smell I would either bag it up and put it in the trash or take it out right away. The normal trash bin doesn't really smell....And then it would smell just as much if you had a free standing bin standing in your kitchen...

    • @flacadiabla3193

      No matter what, the smell sticks to wood. Over time it gets nasty in there

    • @ivyclark70
      @ivyclark70 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Some trash pullouts come with lids too, so that's an option to consider if you want the bins tucked away. We currently have a large 2-bin step system, which we're thinking of incorporating into the cupboards too. Because our bins are primarily for recycling and general waste (which is not compostible), this could work for us and we don't need to worry about smells. :)

    • @jenniferkannapel9450
      @jenniferkannapel9450 Před 6 měsíci +1

      We have a recylcle and garbage base (24") and if you take your garbage out regularly smells are are not a problem.
      After buying a house with that as a built in we have now designed the bin drawers into several of our remodels that we have also lived in.
