- ** Socotra, also called Soqotra, located between the Guardafui Channel and the Arabian Sea, is the largest of four islands of the Socotra archipelago. The territory is located near major shipping routes and is officially part of Yemen, and had long been a subdivision of the Aden Governorate. In 2004, it became attached to the Hadhramaut Governorate, which is much closer to the island than Aden (although the nearest governorate was the Al Mahrah Governorate). In 2013, the archipelago became its own governorate, the Socotra Governorate. **

@@dinadina_tnss4901 Ok so it is a long forgotten story. So in the 8th century Socotra was part of an Ethiopian Empire called Axum. They forcefully conquered it from the Greeks and most of the people were christian. Then the Socotran people were converted to Islam by a Somali Scholar Abdirahman al-Jabarti in the 13th century. Also the Mehri tribe in Socotra are decedents of the Darood tribe in Somalia ( the Arab Saleh to be specific) The Mehri also live in the North east of Somalia (Puntland). The first Sultan of Socotra (Afrar Al-Mehri) was a quarter ethnically Somali and could speak fluent Somali, more than he could speak Arabic. And when the British invaded the Islands in 1839, the last Sultan of Socotra (Isa Ali ibn Salim) fled to Somalia to the mejerteen people. And in the decolonization of both countries, the eastern part of Somalia was owned by the Italians and yeman by the British. (plus Socotra was part of the British empire). The Brits had more authority of who the lands should be given to due to Italy loosing world war two. And as usual, with total disregard and ignorance to the ethnic origins of the inhabitants, gave the islands to the Yemanis. There is way more evidence, but i don't want this reply to get too long.
