    He did the encore because the people, -who he is singing for, really- are the ones who wanted to experience again the utter brilliance of that song, and the way he sang it. Performers could not exist without the people to watch them, remember that. Every time I hear this song, I feel lifted to another place in my mind and heart, so in person, it must have been explosive and the people could not let it go. Do not make this trivial, it means something to people, enjoy it, because it is so special.

      Completamente vero.
      Best singer in the world. I like Puccini too and i recommande you to listen Offenbach (les contes d'Hoffman), George Bizet (Les pecheurs de perles, with Gilles Dubois).

    I think this performance is an excellent answer to his critics who say he could not act, that his voice was past it by the late 80s, and that he ought not to have tackled heavy roles. I think this was beautiful, and obviously so did the audience there.

    Just the fact that he would do it again, at 55, at the end of a long opera, and such an aria as this, says alot about the man as well as the singer.
    Manys the tenor would not have bothered, or risked it.

    You bring up a good point-that the audience desperately senses the inevitable, that this may be the last time they'll see their beloved tenor sing at the top of his game. For me, I would prefer the encore to take place after the show, but I understand that's just not how it's done in opera, only every other music form.

    @raphael44ify As Bono oft said "Others sing opera, Pavarotti WAS opera!" That is why he "owned" most of the roles he performed--he WAS the character. He didn't just sing or act the role, each character WAS a part of either his own personality or a part of his life. Therefore, he wasn't just "acting out" a part but reliving the part of himself the character represented.-----gee I miss him so!

    Just amazing, Pavarotti eeks the last ounce of emotion with that trademark tone and ringing top register. Many wonderful tenors will abbreviate some of the notes ans still move you, but the Maestro has the lungs of a giant and such heart. Unique.

    When I watch this, I cry. When I listen to this I forget to breathe. I remember what Dame Joan Sutherland said. "Don't forget to breathe!" Never a true word spoken.

      @@zmznzbzvzmznzb And when he came in as a young inexperienced tenor, he stood behind Dame Joan Sutherland as she sat on a bench, and when he began to sing, she forgot a couple of her prompts and missed some parts. Her husband said, Joan thats not like you to ever make that mistake. She said, oh mon dio, his voice his voice!!!!!

    You say that because you probably don't know the italian culture ! That's the way it goes, if people enjoy things they express it and it's the beauty of those moments !!! Each concert becomes unique ! We are not in an american professional musical where you'll be able to see the exactly same show four times a day ( emotion against perfection ) ...     It's an encore - that means, that the crowd applauded and asked him to do the aria again. You should definitely watch this opera, it's usually a sopranos' opera, but Pav stole the performance.. ha-ha!

    I saw this on an arts channel, and I'd have to say this is my favorite performance of "E lucevan le stelle." The audience gave Pavarotti a three-minute standing ovation! Miss you, Maestro!

      I wish a video existed of the time he got 165 curtain calls, and the audience applauded for well over an hour, how could you clap that long, you could if it was Pavarotti, and I never got to see him live, never even knew he existed. I cant imagine seeing him in person, I think I would implode, evaporate, etc.

    from Jose' "Timo" Sepulveda.......I am devoted to Placido Domingo and consider him to be the greatest tenor of his generation.......BUT DEAR GOD, LUCIANO WAS OTHER WORLDLY!!!! That mighty voice will outlive Caruso's....unbelievable. Puccini stands head and shoulders above all other operatic composers.

      Placido Domingo knew he was no match for Pavarotti. He is not the greatest, you can talk about anything to compare, but no one compares with Pavarotti, more tears cried for his performances than any other will equal, no. matter how long they sing.

    REMEMBER THIS IS AN OPERA, VIRTUALLY UNHEARD OF WITHIN CONTEXT OF OPERA. EVEN CONDUCTOR OREN WAS AMAZED. Tosca usually is the soprano's opera, however this Time PAVAROTTI Stole the performance. Notice when he acquieced how the applause increased. He sang the encore just as 'FULL OUT' as previously done. Difficult to do he returned into the character when he moved from the wall at the pivotal time. Completion he received almost all the bouquets and another standing OVATION.Ihave on LASER DISC.

    What I like best about 'Big Pava' is his uncomparable voice. You make a good point though, he showed up the critics who were all waiting to to fault him.

    Pavarotti was and is my inspiration, But there will be others. Not like Pavarotti, cause we already had one. But there will be others that will be legends too! I hope so ,for the opera profession we need them for are art to survive the MTV culture! I like MTV , but are art requires audience particpation and focus.. and well its hard to get the 17-30 yr olds to focus for 2 hours!! We will need voices like Prices and Pavarotti's to continue this art. And we will have them.

    The time of this performance was sure past Pavarotti's prime. And he had become the most popular operatic artist in the world. He sounded great. Performances then, when he wasn't "climbing up" any more, were for audience's entertainment. He was terrific. So why not encore?

    Who Gives a Rat's ass, with whom he sang.. Im just glad he was able to share his voice with the Millions who enjoy his music.. Im not an Opera Expert... i know this.. but i dont have to be to enjoy true Talent.. This Man Had Talent..
