I like how they have gasmasks on. in the book, the tripods deployed a heavy toxic gas that would stay close to the ground, so the gas masks make sense.

I don’t know what you’re all talking about? My great grandfather fought in this war! I don’t see why everyone is saying it’s based off of a book. I was traumatized when I learned he was one of the fighters shot down by the one that attacked London. You all have to learn some history, and some respect!
In my opinion, having a fictional alien invasion set in the past is way better than having it set in modern times and the future.

There was one book where we beated the aliens in land for 20 years form 1941 to 1961 only because we are much faster thinker than the aliens who couldn't resist the blitzkrieg, but if they wanted they could have easily bombarded Earth and conquered it.
They didn't because they deemed immoral to extinct another specie.
At the end we win because all our scientist managed to retro-engeener their tech and because we discovered a way to make them go crazy by throwing them saffron, but it's still a really unrealistic way of winning.
Well, if we're taking the facts presented to us in the original book by H G Wells, the Martian tripod fighting machines were vulnerable to direct or near direct hits from light and medium field guns. The Martians out-ranged the artillery with rocket launchers that shot canisters of black gas.
Mind you, this book was published in 1896 or somewhere around then but took place in the early 1900s. With the all mighty power of eyesight, I think we could engage in a protracted conflict with the Martians and their extremely limited numbers with heavy entrenchment and bunkers, heavy artillery, and gas masks. Once the black gas proves ineffectual, the only option left to them would be heat rays, which puts them in range of the guns. If those guns are on reverse slopes (a common tactic from the great war.) I can see the powers of mainland Europe fight the Martians and win. The cost would be victory, but the invasion force's limited numbers would make every loss they take devastating.
It gives it an alternate history vibe.

I like how, at 2:46, they set up a tank on stands to simulate a tripod so the planes can target practice. That's a neat detail in the video, in my opinion.

New game mode similar to survival
Hold a trench system or fort against the tripods and smaller walkers. Using field guns on the walls and machine guns with 32 players against AI but with 16 players being British/French/American soldiers and the other 16 being German or Austrian

There is a mod for HOI4 about the 1938 broadcast being real, not WW1 but still cool
Its actually quite funny and awesome at the same time. Many of the tactics used in WW1 and WW2 in our history such as the Blitzkrieg was instead used to rapidly move German troops all the way across the north and around to reinforce the Allied Line that was holding back the Martians.

The narration and most importantly the atmospheric music contribute to the creepy and yet epic atmosphere of this short film. You can look at versions of this with different kinds of music and its hard to take it as seriously and as deeply as this version.
And the lack of ambiental sound is appropiate as an antique film

I think this is actually the greatest adaptation to wotw. it just gives off the vibe that how the martians would actually look like, very biomechanical-ish.

I love how they manipulated the alien technology to be both infantry support aswell as anti-pod weapons on tanks. But alien-invasion movies today barely apply that, its either that humans SOMEHOW win victorious against futuristic aliens with plain conventional weapons like anti-TANK weapons.
Theyre martians, they live in Mars, they just same as humans but they are older and i could say smarter because they create technology like that than the humans so they can get to the earth and bring those terrifying technology, if we were already here from a millions of years ago we already had technology like that...

I felt more creeped out from that part where the tripod charged the camera than any part of the 2005 movie

This is awesome. I like the soldiers in gas masks; in the book the Martians used chemical weapons against British artillery units, whose shells were capable of taking down a tripod. The tripods didn't have any magic shields, just really good armor and advanced weapons ( the heat ray). Even so, you look at this film and imagine going out to fight these fucking things with just a rifle, that's crazy!
I have an idea, what if the solders where given flares modified to shoot gas grenades at the tripods.
What about deploying smoke screens and send full ahead tanks to ram into the tripods leg.

Hyperion, but your forgetting that Evan though the Martians were advanced, in the book, tripods were experimental weapons for the Martians, meaning they had some minor bugs, such as needing little holes in the legs for stabilization meaning gas could leak through into the cockpit making a flare gun that shoots gas grenades very effective.

Great concept, and extremely well done, but I have a few things to think about.
1) Gas masks - Yes, the martians did use a form of gas, but would the masks work? Would they be so true to how they look in real life?
2) Helmets - They're not firing artillery at eachother, why would the helmet be invented, again so true to how they were in reality? I don't see how the Brodie helmet helps specifically against the martians, why it would be invented.
3) Tanks - The biggest question I have. The early landships have a huge weakness to the Martians in that they can get on top, and it again looks like it's designed for use against human trenches rather than tripods, which are a lot more agile.

@Patrick Cossack a gas mask won't save you from drowning, who says the filters are compatible to protect you from an alien gas? It's a completely different thing, it's not chlorine we're talking about, not every filter can protect against everything. Helmets were invented in 1916, look up why... I don't know what martian falling debris they would be dealing with. Same with tanks, it's not that they had them, it's that... they would have had to INVENT them. And I can't see why. With rifles and stuff, yes, they seem to be largely useless but it's what they had, it's not like the SMLE was invented during the war.

Modern helmets were invented in 1916 in real life, so they LITERALLY DID NOT EXIST during the majority of this, and HAD NO REASON TO BE CREATED, look up why helmets were created as they are today. What I'm proposing is that, using common sense, tanks, gas masks and helmets DID NOT EXIST during the war and with the exception of maybe gas masks COULD NOT HAVE BEEN CREATED as there was NO NEED. It's like if war broke out in the Atlantic ocean in the 1600s and people started using submarines.
The Adrian and Brodie helmet, as well as the Stahlhelm, were put into service around 1916 due to specific circumstances which aren't observed in the Great Martian War. The martians don't use indirect artillery fire and do not use shrapnel. They primarily use their tentacles, gas and that energy based weapon that we can see reverse engineered on tanks, meaning that helmets would actually be a detriment, just being expensive and something for the martians to grab onto, so I do not see why they would INVENT it.
Tanks were made in real life in 1916 to break the trench stalemate. There was no trench stalemate against the Martians. Tanks, therefore, could not have been created in the Great Martian war, because they are vulnerable and expensive.
It's like if somehow the martians made it permanently daytime everywhere and humans created night vision goggles 50 years before they do in real life.

This was incredible. If you showed someone from the 1910's this film I swear they'd think that footage was real. Incredibly life-like!
Very well done... That was cool. The way they shot and edited this helped hide the CG flaws. Smart move. This helped strengthen the "realism" and thus add to the creep factor. It seems to be able to generate the appropriate emotional response of doom and despair. Well done.

Wells state that the Martian tripods had shields; the British army actually managed to destroy a few of the fighting machines with artillery fire. The biggest issue with the tripods of the book was that they moved so fast that hitting them with artillery was damn-near impossible, but that was the only thing that would disable them.

I'm not sure what kind of video this is, but I really like it.
Masterpiece of an video amazing work.
In the novel, troops managed to take a tripod down with a field gun hidden in a wooded area.
In response, the Martians started gassing all of the wooded areas with black gas to prevent soldiers from operating there.
(That's if I'm remembering correctly, it's been a few years.)
