  • I'm making Irish Coffee the way they do at the Dead Rabbit and it's the best damn Irish Coffee you'll find anywhere on earth, without actually going to the Dead Rabbit...

This Irish Coffee is how they make it at the Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog (or at least how they say they make it...) and it's the absolute best darn Irish Coffee I've ever had. I know "who has the best Irish Coffee?!" isn't a question much labored over, you've probably never even bothered to worry about it. Rest assured, this is the best. It's also very simple, there's no weird ingredients, and you can make it in the glass. It is a delicious desert drink sure to please as a nightcap at any party you though, or just for yourself.
    Irish Coffee
1 oz. or 30 ml. Bushmill's Irish Whiskey
~.5 oz. or 15 ml. Simple Syrup
3.5 oz. or 105 ml. Hot Coffee
    Top with fresh whipped creme
    garnish with grated nutmeg

At the bar I work at, nothing fancy but a nice place, we make our Irish coffee slightly differently, heat the whiskey and sugar syrup then add the coffee really slowly so that there is a distinct separation of the whiskey and coffee layer, then add chantilly cream on the top which then gives you a really cool 3 tier drink which looks really class. Just an idea for those who want to make this

    • @Taeerom
      @Taeerom Před 4 lety +117

I would claim that instant coffee is the exact right kind of coffe e to use in an Irish Coffee, and I am quite pretentious when it comes to coffee. The thing about freeze dried coffees, especially of decently well known brands (like nestle), is that they are uniform. Every blend they make is the same (because uniformity was important when they established themselves and that way they can incorporate more "dud" harvests that doesn't taste good alone - so cheaper), which works great when you just want "a coffee", wihtout any particular exiting taste to it. It is inoffensive, edging towards bland, and perfect to add all manner of crap to, like whiskey, whipped cream or moonshine.

No problem! I also didn't know at first. Like, people using nutmeg far and wide, it should be ok... Then I learned it was poisonous stuff and thought to myself "why are people using it, then??". Later i discovered it has as "seed/nut" (idk the name), which has the actual poison and you only use the outer part.
I am still a bit concerned since idk how much you could grate before reaching the core. I imagine that even accidentally hitting it wont cause much problem (just don't be dumb and keep grating it).

Bushmills is an incredibly cheap whiskey, should only run you about $20-24 for the regular bottle he used here. The simplicity of a cheaper Irish whiskey like that will likely help the overall drink because something stronger and more complex would likely drown out or compete with the other flavors in the drink.

Never seen Irish coffee made with whipped cream. Usually, i've seen it with cream that's poured slowly over the back of a spoon to make sure your drink looks like a Guinness pint with a white top. Also, by sweetening the coffee, it normally helps create visible separate layers for the whisky and coffee, meaning you have three visible layers that then you can mix (or not) after serving, to your liking.

    • @aarongrisham463

Bruno Billion a Guinness pint isn’t even the real was to drink it. A tulip glass is the proper way. Also, whip cream is used usually by Irish immigrants into different European countries. Germany, France, Poland, Czech... just about every place I’ve been.

Nope, all wrong. It was invented by an Irish chef working in Shannon Airport, circa 1940s. He prepared it for guests who were delayed on a transatlantic flight. One of the guests who had it was a journalist by the name of Stanton Delaplane. He lived and worked in SF, and the Buena Vista was his regular bar. He told the owner of the drink he had been given in Shannon Airport, and they attempted to replicate it.
Sourcing Irish Whiskey, coffee, and sugar was no issue, however it was the cream which was the biggest obstacle. The cream sold commercially was not suitable, as it's fat content is too low, and would not float over the mix below. They found a dairy that would make them high fat content cream to replicate the Irish Coffee Stanton had in Ireland.
The Buena Vista did not make the Irish Coffee, but they absolutely popularised it, and can be credited for bringing it to a wider audience than expected.

I love your channel as well, both for the nuance you put into your drinks as well as the historical references you often put into the mix. A lifetime ago, I tended bar at The Dubliner in DC. We made an incredible Irish Coffee, pretty much to the specs you offered. I would just like to add that using the actual hand whipped, bakers whipped cream really does make a difference & is a secret to absolute coffee perfection (& that goes for any coffee drink, not just the irish). I've spent a lot of time this winter dialing in my Irish Coffee. I've found that making coffee with a French Press (I use the Hoffman method if that's worth anything to you) works really well--much better than a Chemex, v60, drip, etc. Other methods I use tend to taste watered down once the whiskey has been added, but French Press coffee is really full-bodied and stands up against a few more ounces of dilution. French Press also has a strong flavor which comes through over the sweet and spicy notes of the Bushmills and simple syrup.
I also tend to double the recipe (2 oz. of whiskey and 7-8 oz. of coffee) for a bigger and boozier cup to warm you up!

Besides Irish Coffee. In these cold winter days of northern hemisphere (-20c/-4f) I recomend you to try mint hot chocolate. It’s made from clear mint schnapps/mint booze known as ”minttu viina” in finnish (since it’s made in Finland) mixed with sweet hot chocolate and topped with whipped cream. Add grated chocolate for garnish. Instead of ”minttu viina” you can use creme de menthe liquer but bear in mind that ”minttu viina” is 35%alc (70 proof) where creme de menthe is only 24%alc (48 proof) and needless to say it’s green instead of clear booze.
It’s perfect after some outside activities to warm you up. Alternatively you can make a batch to your thermos bottle and take a break with your activities :)

    1.5oz Tullamore Dew
    .5oz simple syrup
Fill glass with coffee leaving about a quarter inch from the rim. We used a high quality medium-dark roast from a local roaster. Damn fine cup on its own.

Nah, off-the-boil is actually better for drip. By the time the water falls through the air and mixes with the grounds/slurry, it's well below 210F. Try it next time! Along with stirring your bloom.
Using cooler water is more important in espresso where pressure is involved, and the hot water from the group head is right up against the grounds.
You also probably got a bit better of a brew for Irish using the Melittas. Chemex filters are so thick that they really thin out the brew. A bit more body with a medium-dark brew does pretty well with the cream+sugar+Irish in this drink.
    Good stuff, Greg!
