  • In this video we troubleshoot and start the repair process for a 2001 Polaris Expedition 425 Speedometer. This belongs to a friend and it is interesting how this works. After looking into these, It seems to be a common failure on them for running them with a bad battery or no battery. It seems the voltage charge regulator may cause issues with the internals of the speedo. Another bad deal with no speedo is that the four wheel drive enable comes from this speedo as well to make sure the vehicle is at zero speed before shifting. I share in this video how helpful the site was for KA7OEI's blog in helping me identify the burnt resistor on this board. The site has lots of help on these and I highly suggest checking it out if you are having the same issues. I will try my best to go further with this repair and see if we can still get this one back going after 7 components at this time, we still have more failed components to go. I will post a part 2 of this speedo repair as long as the Main Microcontroller is not dead. Hope you find this video helpful and thanks for watching!

Wow, what a nice job of trouble shooting and documenting your approach. I love your tools, obviously this is not your first rodeo. Thanks for posting you did a fantastic job. De-soldering tool, device tester, board holder, curved soldering tip and low temp solder and flux types was very informative. Nice job.

Thanks for the very in-depth videos on this repair! Would you happen to know of a source for the LCD display? The display on the 2002 I just purchased has disintegrated from water damage, but miraculously everything else functions ok after I dried it out and cleaned it.

I sure don't. It is a few items that would be very hard to find replacements for. The LCD, microcontroller and gauge would all be hard to find without buying another unit for spare parts. I wish you the best with yours! Thanks for your kind comment.

I have the same speedometer and it is not working. Would you be willing to repair mine?

I wish I had time, I do get asked this often. I do not have a repair service at this time. I work full time+ in a Industrial job and try to have time to edit videos to post. I try to help by posting what I have learned and sharing that best I can. Best of luck to you with yours!

Can you fix the same kind of speedo damaged by moisture?

Depending on how bad the corrosion is it is possible to repair it. I am saying in general. I don't have a repair business myself.
