The Mask is a classic movie that surprisingly still holds up incredibly well even by today's standards, and even though the movie was a great success, it has never really received all the credit it is due. Maybe this is because it was released in 1994, alongside films like Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, or True Lies, or perhaps it is because of its light-hearted comedic screenplay, but The Mask just wasn't taken seriously even though it pushed the limits of what was possible with VFX and became the first film to have a photo-real 3-D cartoon character using computer animation.

The Mask movie was loosely based on a comic of the same name which in turn was based on the works of the cartoonist legend Tex Avery. The works of Tex Avery were heavily referenced throughout the movie in various ways: with props, Images, Gags and iconic movements.
In fact, Avery's work was referenced so much that it actually became part of the look and the personality of The Mask himself and for the style of the visual effects.
VFX artists at ILM studied Tex Avery's work and began to build up a library of drawings and clips for use as reference material.
ILM then did a photo shoot with Jim Carrey and then their art department began manipulating his face to get an idea of how far they could go and just how it would look...

Let's also not forget that Jim Carrey released Dumb & Dumber, The Mask and Ace Ventura Pet Detective all in the same year (1994), playing three vastly different characters perfectly. Underrated actor

When I was a kid, there was this French Canadian comedian who were compared to Jim Carrey a lot. He could do a lot of cartoonesque moves like that.

Talking about looks good even today, I had no idea the mask came out in 1994. I had honestly thought it came out when I was a kid when I had 1st watched it. And I was born in 2000 almost in 2001. I must have been like 6 or 7 yo when I 1st seen the mask and had gotten the movie at home, I literally can’t remember if it was a VHS tape or a DVD and I can’t find it rn. I can’t believe it’s 28 years old already.
Softimage 3D in this movie was a pretty fun software to use back in the 90s for game commercials too

This is mindblowing. What's even more mind-blowing is that the producers actually allow us to see the raw footage and it being mixed with cgi. Makes me appreciate this movie even more.

Classic. As a kid, I probably watched this movie over 1000 times. I could literally play out almost the whole movie myself at one point. Not Jim's BEST work, but definitely his most iconic.
I saw this movie in the theater like 7 times, when it came out. I was about 16-17 yrs old at that time. Loved it!

His best work was actually the grinch. Due to how much complications he had trying to make All those expressions with about 50pounds of paint covering his face. Till this day he admits its one of the hardest jobs he's ever done Jim Carrey admitted that.
It's important to note Jim Carey was a big fan of Tex Avery, that's why he is so animated. Probably why The Mask worked out so well, He was probably very easy to work knowing the exaggerated acting he needed to do.

Fun fact: Jim also saved some VFX money as he can be really flexible with facial expressions and make exaggerated facial gestures ( just like a cartoon). Having such exaggerated facial expressions for the Mask character was intended since the beginning, and they thought they would do it with VFX in the post but when Jim started acting, they didn't have to.

They did have than change the make up several times though as early concept ideas actually limited what he could do from under the mask he was originally going to wear.
They had a similar issue with Robin Williams in Bicentennialman as the director wanted him to be able to emote from under the robot mask so they had to design it in segmented parts to give him that freedom to move as if it were his own face.
There's concept design photos floating around you can see the original prototype was much thicker and closer to how it looked in the comics but Jim couldn't really emote with that mask on. The final version they ended up with was much lighter and does allow him the freedom to move with it on. So they might have saved on the VFX budget but the trade off is a higher make up/prosthetics budget to make sure that Jim can actually still be expressive with the mask on.

There's this, then there's jumanji. One of these is not like the other.
It's because it was creatively applied and mixed with analog setups. Today they just try to do everything digitally and it all feels like a soulless mass. There's no human touch.
Jim Carey feels more like family than an actor. He puts so much was heart and soul into every character that it stays with you even after the end of the film. Such a prolific actor and comedian. The VFX team here too deserve props.
You know why the CGI in this movie still holds up well? It's because love and effort were put into it. It honestly feels more alive than what we get from Modern Hollywood.
It's also exaggerated, cartoony CGI. It's much more resilient to aging than realistic CGI.
Just like Jurassic Park. The robots and some of the CGI work still looks decent.

CGI in the 90s was done to do things that couldn't be done otherwise with practical effects, with care and precision. Now, CGI is used as a way to do anything that could be done in real life, but cheaper and faster. Its now used as a shortcut.
Forget the cgi. I can still remember sitting the cinema when Cameron Diaz entered her first scene. My heart stopped and I couldn't breathe.
And now she's a mom! 😂😂

Lol thanks to the way Hollywood is ran I'd be surprised if we see any good films or shows made these days. Well with the rare exception like Beavis and Butt-Head but that's an old school person doing it so it really doesn't count.
The mask made 351 million in box office in 1994. It was the most popular film based on a comic at the time.

I watched this film billion times when I was kid. Even then I was absolutely amazed by the level of visual effects. Now, after all these years (I haven't seen it since the late 90s I think), I watched this fragments shown in your video and I got to say I'm amazed even more! What a wonderful tandem of practical and digital effects.
It is a little bit fun that the quality of visual effects was so much better than nowadays ones, just because the CGI was weaker and harder to make than now, so they got to use practical effects to balance result quality. Now, when every kid can make pretty nice and realistic CGI on his own PC, the big studios decided to not using any practical effects at all, because "everything you can imagine you can just draw by yourself".

I think the Mask was a masterpiece. It is old school humor from cartoons I watched as a kid, combined with one of the most animated actors in history. It was cheese but real good cheese.

Ive loved Jim Carry since i was little. I had alot of traumatizing moments as a kid but he always knew how to keep my mind off of it and always had me laughing. He's just an amazing and interesting character. Will always have love for him ❤️❤️

Rewatched this recently and I felt it still held up. The Director and Carrey must’ve been so In sync with their love of old cartoons because they nailed all the references. The movie is such a treat for the lil kid in me

Interesting fact about Tex Avery: During some office horseplay at his time at the Walter Lantz studio, a thumbtack or paper clip flew into Avery's left eye and caused him to lose sight in that eye. Some speculate it was his lack of depth perception that gave him his unique look at animation and bizarre directorial style, but it did not stop his creative career. Part of the typical crude horseplay at the studio was using a rubber band or a paper spitball to target the back of a colleague's head. Animator Charles Hastings decided to take the game one step further, by using a wire paper clip instead. Avery heard one of his colleagues telling him to look out. He reacted by turning around. Instead of the back of his head, the paper clip hit Avery in his left eye.

The VFX people expected they would have to dub Jim's lines in post because they didn't think he'd be able to talk normally with those big teeth in his mouth. Lucky for us they underestimated what he was capable of! Quite a bit of improve in this movie too, or happy accidents. Like when Jim is playing with the frisbee with his dog Milo and he's trying to get Milo to let go and it smashed Jim in the mouth. That was unplanned but it works so they left it in. P-A-R-T...Why? 'Cuz I _GOTTA!_

Carey has always been capable of extremely exaggerated facial expressions, to the point where people have said he's "plastic -faced." Comparing movies like Ace Ventura's fcial expressions with The Mask & The Grinch, the VFX really blurred the difference between Carey's "animated" face & his all-natural expressions.

I still think the VFX in the Mask is so good, it’s so much better than most CGI films now. There’s just something realistic on how they rendered/colored the CGI in the Mask. Most CGI now have unrealistic colors/rendering that doesn’t quiet match how the real objects look on film. Looking at you Marvel films where the colors/rendering looked like it was done by someone on acid.
Probably not, a good chunk of the VFX today isn't even noticeable and used for things like cleaning up background shots or extending sets that aren't practical to build out completely. This movie did, and does, look good, but it's overstating it a lot to suggest that it's photo realistic when it never was.

@@SmallSpoonBrigadeI think by CGI he meant to say the things in the foreground, like characters or objects. The colors are too fantastical, like theyre trying to make it look cool and pretty but it just stands oit. The background stuff is really good.
Pure genius work here. The writing, the acting, the animation, just fit so perfect.
The animation specifically was ahead of it's time and Jim being able to nail the role as well as he did is a testament to how great he always was at acting.

Needless to say 1994 was one of the best years for 90's movies because it had so many great movies shawshank redemption, the mask, Ace Ventura: pet detective, Forrest Gump, are definitely 4 of my favorite movies from the 90's.

@@umadbro4493 Well today, the technology is more advanced. Some technology and software is so readily available that people can make effects on their laptop at home.
What I was trying to say. It's interesting seeing how they were able to work around the lack of CGI and not as advanced technology in the 70s,80s,90s. The make up effects for films like Alien, An American Werewolf in London, The Fly and The Thing were amazing.

Avery is a pretty based last name if I do say so myself. I love The Mask, especially the performance of Cuban Pete, but learning about what went on behind the scenes makes me appreciate the movie even more. Jim Carrey perfected the role, but the crew who made these effects possible are just as talented. Together they made the movie the masterpiece that it is
I saw this movie on TV as a small kid and fell in love with the character, Jim Carrey's acting and the VFX. I recorded it onto a blank VHS tape next time it was broadcast and banged my head against the wall out of frustration when I noticed after the movie that I had recorded the wrong channel. Now it's some 25 years later and I'm watching a VFX analysis of the movie on CZcams.

I love how a lot of the best parts of old movies like this are problems that are solved in unconventional ways. The teeth are one of them and I think this is why a lot of people love these movies over ones nowadays. People worked with what they had and had to really love what they did, otherwise you could tell because solving these problems required creative thinking. Now, there's much easier and much cheaper ways of doing these things. It's like in gaming when players find an easier way to complete an objective over the dev intended way. Easier wins, harder doesn't.
Being born in the 90' I loved this movie so much, used to love the game too. I remember my cousin made a mask, just as real as the movie, and I was astonished by it.. I tried it on, it didn't work, but I could still feel the magic in it. Oh those magical days!

I'm not sure if this gets a lot of praise but the makeup for on both Jim and Peter (dorian) is kinda a little impressive. Not a lot of actors out there who can go unrecognizable in this kind of makeup.
I am very grateful to have been a teenager during the 90's that's for sure. Especially with Ace, The Mask, Dumb & Dumber and later The Cable Guy entertaining me deeply. Fun memories to this day still.

I think its a credit to the VFX team how well they achieved the effects with the computers available at the time. The mask is still one of my all time favourite movies.

Lovely video. I remember getting this on DVD back in the day and being super stoked to see one of the deleted scenes, the lead-in where ancient Norsemen had actually put Loki into the mask... I mean, I had no idea that it was actually filmed until around when I got the DVD and marketers announced "hey this is an extra feature!", so OMG, I did one of those wolf head wowzer expressions!

Its stunning how much more difficult doing a movie like this is in comparison to other movies. Not just for the VFX people, but for the director and actors.

Missing one more fact...The appearance of The Mask as Elvis was what Jim wanted in the movie. After much resistance, the director folded and created one of the funniest morphs before being shot.

Awesome video, grew up watching The Mask on VHS like everyday haha I was obsessed with Jim Carrey movies, still love it and can rewatch it and still be entertained the whole time. This and Cable Guy and Ace Ventura are my favs, but The Mask will always be #1. Seeing how all these nostalgic scenes were made gave me goosebumps, great job!!

We never used green mask to remove head. Those were rotoscoped. (Hand cut out in post vfx)
@@ScottSquires Scott - you were VFX supervisor on the mask? how were shots matchmoved back then? was it entirely manual or were there software solutions? boujou didn't exist!
In terms of matching lighting, my assumption would be that there was no HDRI capability at the time, so I'm guessing it was just down to taking reference photos on set and artistry on the part of the 3d animator?
I'm fascinated by older but very solid looking VFX like this, and the limitations that had to be overcome at the time.
@@cahal Yes, I was the VFX supe. Matching moving was all done by hand. We'd take measurements, build basic geometrics and match it by eye. Lighting - would shoot references when possible such as the clock in the hallway but no chrome/gray spheres yet at that time. Also woudl make lighting diagrams on set which lights were where. So lighting mostly by eye.

I love Jim Carrey he was my favorite actor has a kid in the 90s and still is my favorite actor. I still say some of his lines today when speaking. I have almost every Jim Carrey movie part of my collection.

The use of practical effects to enhance the VFX, combined with the love and effort put into refining each, is what makes this movie hold up immensely well!

One of my favorite movies growing up. I still wish they would do a reboot that was more true to the dark violent comedy of the comic.
Everything about this movie is fantastic, my only problem was that it didn't follow the darker themes the comic was going for.
it's strange to me how 90s VFX were so "real"
even tho modern CGI and VFX are stunning, they always break the willing suspension of disbelief
but this era of movies always is captivating. even on the first watch. totally immersive and something organic about all of it.

So much work put into these type movies. I am so glad to hear how they did it and how it came out in the end. I agree that Jim Carey is underrated. He has a Robin Williams feel to him. Robin was my all time favorite performer. He could do it all also. RIP Robin

It's insane how good the CGI was in this movie in 1994. And it's crazy to think that even today they would still alot of trouble trying to get many of these shots right despite all the advances in CGI technology. It was just so brilliantly done.

Always love watching The Mask! Such a great movie, especially the special effects!! It made it worth the watch!
