    Hard to believe the C130 first flew in 1955! Still going strong. It just proof that it's design has kept up with the times. I'll never forget my first time seeing a Herkybird in the Army. A short field landing on a dirt strip. Outta of the flying dirty emerges this big beast. It was downright impressive.

    The C-130 is an amazing aircraft for being designed in the 50's and the first flight taking place in 1954. I spent 18+ years flying this wonderful bird that is so easy to fly. I would love to have had a chance to fly the new J-model HERK with the better props.

    • @samuel5916
      @samuel5916 Před 4 lety +1

      Jack Taylor ‘Better’ is subjective, the J model props are carbon fiber so they save a lot of weight sure but they break very easily. Even a small impact will shatter a blade like glass and the whole prop has to be thrown away. Old props are made from Aluminum so they can be blended/repaired and returned to service.

    • @Allan_aka_RocKITEman
      @Allan_aka_RocKITEman Před 4 lety +1

      @@samuel5916 >>> I have heard that about the _DOWTY-ROTOL_ props on the J-models. I ALSO erroneously thought individual blades could be replaced WITHOUT removing the ENTIRE PROP from the aircraft, but that is not the case.
      AFAIK, the 8-bladed composite _HAMILTON-SUNDSTRAND_ props used on the E-2 HAWKEYE airplanes CAN have individual blades replaced WITHOUT removing the entire propeller.

    • @samuel5916
      @samuel5916 Před 4 lety +2

      RocKITEman _ 2001 I’ve heard rumors of a new carbon fiber prop they’ll retrofit H-models with eventually. Apparently you can replace blades without removing the whole prop. The trouble with the current J-model props is that they’re a matched set so you can’t just switch out a blade. They come from the factory perfectly balanced with each other so if you changed one of the blades it could unbalance and destabilize the entire prop. However, with the new props they’re developing you can switch out a damaged blade and the one directly opposite from it with a new pair. This keeps the blades properly balanced and saves a lot of time and money. They need to hurry up and roll it out, carbon fiber ain’t exactly cheap. I can’t imagine how many millions of tax-payer dollars have already been flushed down the toilet by that abysmal design. If only more engineers realized that making something easy/cheap to fix is far more important then performance.

    Flew on many of these in the 80’s. One of the most memorable flights was into a remote airstrip in Honduras to pick up an Oshkosh ARFF (fire truck). After doing the weight and balance and calculating the required takeoff distance it was decided to give the locals some MRE’s in exchange for lopping off a couple tree tops at the departure end of the runway to ensure takeoff clearance. Good times!

      @@zodszoo Reverse thrust while slowing down is no big issue, the problem is when you are stationary or moving backwards (powerback). There is a risk of FOD(foreign object damage) due to dust and debris blown forward and then sucked into the engines intake. This is why you never see airliners perform powerback, they are allways assisted by a ground vehicle for pushback.

      Brakes still do the major work to slowdown/stop a C130. Probably even more so on the C17. C17 has 12 mains with brakes on all of them. C130 has 4 mains/brakes. Had C17 land at our base many times, especially Barbers Point. Pretty sure they outperform us (HC130H) for stopping and take off, even though they are heavier. At Barbers, if you land from ocean side of the runway, the turn off to our area comes up pretty fast. Not sure on distance, but we have to be light and pilot really trying to slow down soon enough to turn off. C17 comes in with a load and does it no problem, took one of our helos then went wheels up easily before that point. I love C130's, but C17s are absolute beast. Not sure how J's compare.

During the Kosovo war they were trying to prove the 17 could do as well as the Herk in tactical situations by going into Tirana, Albania. Trying to taxi in the tight confines of the ramp the 17s destroyed their nose wheels so quickly they almost had to pull them out of the fight. I really cant believe how little restriction you Aussies have for these airshows. Never in a million years would we be allowed to do tandem tactical landings and takeoffs that close to a crowd in the US. Even just having the crowd that close to an active runway without any barriers would never happen here.

    • @bertvdlast
      @bertvdlast Před 5 lety

      Kille78. It would take quite some barrier to protect people from a crashing Herky or C 17.

    • @kille78
      @kille78 Před 5 lety +1

      bertvdlast Never said the rules were logical lol but the barriers we have to use are more for crowd control and keeping kids from running off into the runway or something
