Why does every airshow world wide feel the need to play crappy music while aviation enthusiast do their best to enjoy the sounds of engines, jets and props? The aircraft are why we came to the show, not for a "B" list soundtrack.
Mark Stewart Soto Cono, now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a few decades. Isn’t that where the SF based out of? Never got to go there myself. Our chalks landed in La Ceiba.
The C-130 is an amazing aircraft for being designed in the 50's and the first flight taking place in 1954. I spent 18+ years flying this wonderful bird that is so easy to fly. I would love to have had a chance to fly the new J-model HERK with the better props.
Jack Taylor ‘Better’ is subjective, the J model props are carbon fiber so they save a lot of weight sure but they break very easily. Even a small impact will shatter a blade like glass and the whole prop has to be thrown away. Old props are made from Aluminum so they can be blended/repaired and returned to service.
@@samuel5916 >>> I have heard that about the _DOWTY-ROTOL_ props on the J-models. RocKITEman _ 2001 I’ve heard rumors of a new carbon fiber prop they’ll retrofit H-models with eventually. Apparently you can replace blades without removing the whole prop. The trouble with the current J-model props is that they’re a matched set so you can’t just switch out a blade. They come from the factory perfectly balanced with each other so if you changed one of the blades it could unbalance and destabilize the entire prop. However, with the new props they’re developing you can switch out a damaged blade and the one directly opposite from it with a new pair. This keeps the blades properly balanced and saves a lot of time and money. They need to hurry up and roll it out, carbon fiber ain’t exactly cheap. I can’t imagine how many millions of tax-payer dollars have already been flushed down the toilet by that abysmal design. If only more engineers realized that making something easy/cheap to fix is far more important then performance.

After doing the weight and balance and calculating the required takeoff distance it was decided to give the locals some MRE’s in exchange for lopping off a couple tree tops at the departure end of the runway to ensure takeoff clearance. Good times!
KK Teutsch Most big jets nowadays have a thing called reverse thrust, it allows them to slow down quicker and go in reverse, though it’s unhealthy for the engines
@@zodszoo Reverse thrust while slowing down is no big issue, the problem is when you are stationary or moving backwards (powerback). There is a risk of FOD(foreign object damage) due to dust and debris blown forward and then sucked into the engines intake. This is why you never see airliners perform powerback, they are allways assisted by a ground vehicle for pushback.

Brakes still do the major work to slowdown/stop a C130. Probably even more so on the C17. C17 has 12 mains with brakes on all of them. C130 has 4 mains/brakes. Had C17 land at our base many times, especially Barbers Point. Pretty sure they outperform us (HC130H) for stopping and take off, even though they are heavier. At Barbers, if you land from ocean side of the runway, the turn off to our area comes up pretty fast. Not sure on distance, but we have to be light and pilot really trying to slow down soon enough to turn off. C17 comes in with a load and does it no problem, took one of our helos then went wheels up easily before that point. I love C130's, but C17s are absolute beast. Not sure how J's compare.

Trying to taxi in the tight confines of the ramp the 17s destroyed their nose wheels so quickly they almost had to pull them out of the fight.
