LM-100J Super Hercules Goes Inverted at Farnborough 2018

- Lockheed Martin's LM-100J Super Hercules flight demonstration from the Farnborough International Air Show 2018 literally stole the show when Chief Pilot Wayne Robert pulled off maneuvers which literally made the Super Hercules mimic a Tom Cat out of "Top Gun". You see "Old pilots" or you end up seeing "Bold Pilots", but rarely you come across an "Old and Bold" pilot like Wayne Robert. Captain Wayne Robert's behind the wheel was apparently pulling off his last air show display before retiring, so he clearly seems to be taking all the leverage he needed to pull off stunts which would make people forget "fighters" at Farnborough.

I was in the Air Force for 8years and have been ferried all around the world inside the Hercules and I never felt safer than when flying in the C-130. It is one of best aircraft that has ever been made. The C-130 will never be redundant. I have the utmost respect for this aircraft and I was a crew chief on fighter jets for 8 years.
I'm in tech school right now for c130J crew chief I grad in 10 days!
This is a beautiful design and has been since the get-go in 1954. Timeless engineering shows in simplicity and longevity and 65 years later it just keeps getting better and better. Bravo Lockheed!
Best part is - Lockheed hasn't stopped production of the C130-J model. It's still to this day the most versatile, rugged turboprop cargo plane that the US airforce has in its arsenal because of it's good STOL performance and rugged landing gear, which lets it land on rough or unprepared runways that other cargo planes would struggle to land on.
Probably also one of the only planes that is still in production to some capacity at least. This not counting the Basler DC-3 turboprop conversions as they don't actually produce Douglas DC-3 fusilages to make their conversions. They use existing ones to my knowledge.
Wayne Roberts I salute you. Fantastic aerial display in a monster of a plane like the Hercules.
My Uncle was a Flight Sergeant Royal Air Force, and served as a Loadmaster on Hercules Aircraft for a number of years, sadly, he passed away this year, but he would have been very very proud at seeing the old War Horse still going strong, and giving a flying display like this
6:50 The real loop. Gimme a moment while I collect my jaw off the table.
Yeah, that describes the feeling
In service since 1954, and still in production, the mighty Hercules. Somewhere up there Kelly Johnson is smiling.
Helium Road the L100, was the Civilian version of the C130 herc, but was made when it was just LOCKHEED , I first saw a pix of it at their headquarters in WATCHUNG NJ, when iDid a/c service there in 1968. Sadly that site is now a mall.
HR, The C130 did not enter service until late 1956. Australia was the first non-USA operator with the RAAF having acquired 12 C130A models with delivery starting in late 1958. I was fortunate enough to operate as a Flight Engineer on C130A-E-H models before going Boeing.
G'day BoeingFE, Spot on! My love affair with our Hercs really began at '486Sqn D Serve Hangar', Richmond. I'd go on a 'jolly' or volunteer for anything, as often as I could, if it involved flight time in a Herc.
There used to be a weekly USAF flight into Richmond, (usually an A Model Starlifter). Our young USAF brothers used to marvel at our A Models, never having seen one before. Often they used the 'museum' word, much to the irritation of us RAAF types. Sometimes we'd get a RAF or USAF Herc in for a visit, or passing through, and one of the things we always noticed was that our Hercs were a lot cleaner and neater inside and out. Even back then RAAF Herc crews regularly won inter-service and inter-air force competitions. You were no doubt involved in those achievements. Thanks for your service, mate. Sadly, I was posted to HQSC before the H-Models arrived. Cheers BH
P.S. I sure hope the RAAF sticks with the Herc and doesn't let the Spartan take over completely. A decent aircraft but, really, a Herc is a Herc and there's nothing like a Herc! :)
G'day Bill. Thanks for your comments. I joined the RAAF the same year we got the C130A, 1958. I spent ten years with 36 Sqn, 8 of them as a C130 FE, mostly on the A model, a few hundred hours on the E model and only six months on the H model before taking on the B707 when we acquired those from Qantas. Left the RAAF in 1981 and went civil. L1011 and B747. I know nothing of the J model, but by all accounts it is doing a good job for the RAAF. Best wishes. BoeingFE.
My Daddy was a loadmaster on the Herky Bird during Vietnam. He would have loved this. He took my daughter and I to see the Blue Angles and sometimes I wonder if he went for their air show or Big Al? Forgive me if I got the name wrong. But we all grew knowing the stories of the C-130 as have his grand kids.
Even after 65 years, Fat Albert is still the King
@a10warthog61 747*
Wow! Jumped out of C-130s in 1969 in 82nd Airborne Division. Never even thought they could do a loop. Wow! Thank goodness they flew mostly straight and level with us. Always felt safe in a C-130. Good, solid, safe airplane.
Dont know your real name ..... but with cargo onboard and even souls on board there not permitted to do loops or even banks higher than 45 to prevent stress on the wing surfaces
That was my first duty station afer tech school - Pope AFB NC supporting the 82nd at Ft Bragg - 43151F Crew Chief 71-72
Almost any aircraft can do a loop, as long as entry and exit air speeds are controlled - properly done, the aircraft dosen't see much more than 1G.
In around 1963 we took several C-130's from Dyess AFB at Abilene, Texas to Pope AFB loaded troops from Fort Bragg and flew both the 82nd and 101st on a joint drop.
@@williammawk1720 this particular aircraft is not your typical military transport either....a few highly visible mods are on it, plus the lightweight of a totally empty aircraft..........but, not to distract....its an incredible maneuver for any large aircraft.
Holy Crap! I was a crew chief on C-130Ds in the 1960s and we never got over 45 deg bank ever. Just the most superb plane ever.
Thàts why it's called super!
In the early '70's my Dad was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. From our quarters on post I could see Pope Air Force Base. Used to see C-130's doing touch and goes all the time. I fell in love with those airplanes. The C-130 has always been my favorite. We used to go out to the drop zone and I have seen them drop everything from men to tanks.
Amazing piloting skills with this beast of a plane.
10/10.
donkey thong ok
This is yet another reason why c130 is a legend!! Its as insaine as landing it on a carrier!

I was one of the design engineers of the YC-130 Prototype Hercules at the main Lockheed Plant in Burbank CA - back in the mid 1950's. We built 2 of them. When Lockheed was awarded a production contract - production started at the new Lockheed plant at Warner-Robins AFB in Marietta, GA. Now the longest production run of any aircraft - by far - in history!
Excellent! Can you tell us any interesting stories during the development of the plane or some of the issues you had to resolve and overcome?
if your on a good thing stick to it.

Pilot: "I'm gonna loop this plane."
Co-pilot: "Bullshit."
P: "Hold my beer..."
Loadmaster "oh shit, I forgot the tie downs on the cargo"
OI ! Ya flipped me Jeeps ! I got a right mess now !
Co-pilot; "do you have something stronger.?"...;-D

Screw anybody that claims propeller planes are obsolete. Absolutely amazing aircraft.
turbo-props are still essential for many reasons: One of them is it's more fuel-efficient than Turbo-jets & Turbo-fans.
I love the C-130 "Hercules"... 1 of my favorites growing up... I'm not used to see cargo aircraft doing loops... :D !!!
There's so much wrong here it's hard to know where to start! If this aeroplane is not heavily breathed on + fumes in tank & both pilots in their underwear, then I been smoking something I shouldn't have. Amazing display of bits not coming of an aeroplane. Thank you for vid sir.
Try that with 3 Humvees and 60 troops in back, Amazing display of plane AND pilot abilities!!
The wings would snap off.
3 Humvees, 60 troops, and 6 cases of Dramamine!!! ;^)
Not in a C130 my friend. 60 Joes equals middle seats...
oddly enuf, as long as only 1g of force was maintained, it should work.
one helluva an airplane i worked on the A and B models along with the first ski model while in Greenland during the extention of the Dew Line. Loved how it was able to do everything it was asked to do...
So impressive! Such a huge beast of a plane thrown around like a smaller jet. Amazing machine! Great pilots, I would have smp.
Soooooo....I was a loadmaster for the dear old USAF on H model 130’s, then for a little company called Southern Air Transport on the L-100’s. We had the highest time L100 in the world, with just under 100,000 hours. We made the USAF look pretty timid on occasion, but this new J-model is a badass! I damn near cried watching this. I grew up in the aviation world on Hercs. May there always be that unique engine drone in the sky as long as we need planes. 😎
Awesome performance. Proven airframe design from 1954.
At 4:44, what was that maybe 100 feet to a full stop????? 7:00 tight loop, 9:32 flap control, 10:15 speed brake, tight right turn, Most impressive, MOST IMPRESSIVE!!
No, it was at least 600 feet, 100 feet is about the length of the Herc itself
It was a bit more than that definitely, it just seems super short because of the viewing perspective. It was probably a couple hundred yards.
The only Cargo Hauler I've seen that could perform in that manner is the McDonnell Douglas/Boeing C-17 Globemaster. It came in to land at the "Wings Over Wine Country Airshow" in Sonoma County, CA a couple of years ago. It landed very slowly, then stopped VERY short... and then backed up!! The comments from the crowd around me were pretty entertaining.
WTF!!
That was certainly a test of the quality of the airframe of the venerable C130!
WOW
Maybe, What was the TOW? Surely enough, the Hercules was empty, with fuel enough for the show. I guess the improvements have gone towards a longer service life more than ingreasing the tolerance to G forces... I do not really care anyway.
My Father was a navigator in the USAF on C130's before he served in AC130's and once at a London Airshow they striped their C130 down as much as possible and did a roll. I wish I still had the newspaper that read something like 'Herc Stuns London Crowd'.
Everyone is impressed with the loops, Im impressed with the short landing.
come on dude.....he stopped inside of 50 yards.....lol......that's what it looked like.
short landings are obligatory nowadays
And that takeoff tbh
Reversible props be like
"Ok, I'll land on this parking lot right here."
Real flying in a real aircraft - both superlative and a joy to watch...thanks for the upload!
Loop starts at 6:50, the rest is just amazing flying.

Great aerobatic manoeuvres from the Captain, I always think it is great when you can get an aircraft to whistle and howl too, thank you for sharing would be nice also to see the herky bird buzzing the airfield full throttle at only two feet altitude, when armoured car is dropped out of the back with guns blazing.

Good old Herc, used to love the tree top drops and short landings and take offs ;) impressive flying ;)
I have long contended that the 130 is one of the 5 greatest planes ever flown. This video only strengthens the assertion.
I saw a C-130 do an actual loop. What is left in life now?

great video!
edit: at 7:13 without jatos! this would have caused load shifts in many flight suits in my day...
Oh that's funny.... yup, load shifts noooo doubt!!
Fricken awesome plane and pilot
Tex Johnson did this in a B707. It’s a 1G maneuver and completely safe.
William Jones-Halibut ...yes, he did. but that’s ALL he did with that 707. watch this again...i’m still bug-eyed in awe.
I saw one of these take off at El Toro equipped with JATO (or RATO, as the case may be). Pilot hit full engine power for about 200 feet, then hit the JATOs and wow!, near immediately doubled his speed, pulled it hard up at about 45 degrees, climbed to about 800 feet and leveled off. Noisy, smoky and impressive. And this is a great pilot. He would have liked R.A. "Bob" Hoover. They both know the value of speed and power management. I didn't think the LM-100J was capable of a loop. Impressive.
JATO refers to rocket-assisted take off. Rockets are still at type of jet reaction propulsion. (I.e. they expel a jet of fluid.) Just sayin.
thank you for Lockheed’s chief C-130 pilot Wayne Roberts.
How could an innocent video featuring an airplane get a thumbs down? What a sad existence other people have.
Kids.
Well I enjoyed it even though it really didn't go 'inverted'. May be that's why?
Maybe they work for Airbus...
Michael ...did you see the 7:00 + mark ? ...pulling a loop IS going inverted.
Don't worry about it Mate there Brain Dead People
Wow, one hell of a plane, & one hell of a pilot!! that was awesome. 👍👍
Im so blown away that a plane of that size is pulling crazy gs and a very strong structural integrity
I love how it does a wheelie at the end after all that forward momentum unloads...
Being a Farnborough resident, I've seen 50+ yrs worth of airshows, and been on the company stand for some. Some things worry me more than an SU35 Cobra over my house; that was one of them. I watched him do that from the Farnborough road by the Swan pub. The first time, I was thinking "please stay up there". Next time I was thinking "please don't land on my shed". Strong air-frame!
It's impressive enough, maybe slow your roll on the Top Gun comparison. It can reasonably, dare I say easily argued that the C-130 family has been the most useful design in military aviation history.
No doubt whatsoever in the validity of that claim.
The C130 will remain in service in the 2030s, possibly reaching its 80th Anniversary which I think is incredible.
The Top Gun reference stands. What else are you going to be flying rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong in?
Ever heard of a little plane called the B52?
But yes, the C130 is a damned impressive aircraft... hands down!
jack torrence Fair enough Sir... was just suggesting that the B52 predates the venerable Herk.
And I did mention that the flight characteristics and performance of the J model are damned incredible!
Thanks
The Hercules is fantastic and looks like it's set for a huge sales boost after this display , Was my fav jump aircraft , when it entered service with the RAF .
Was crapping myself watching the amazing handling....need a drink now, mdidnt think it couod be DONE like that
You know a pilot's skilled when he can take a Herc, handle it like a fighter and *not* suffer a sudden, uncontrolled and rapid G-force related disassembly. A true show of airmanship right there!!
Wonder if this guy would have the nads to barrel roll a 747?...
I doubt the flight control system would allow it. A barrel roll is a combination of a loop and simultaneous aileron roll. Its around a 2.5G manouver so technically it can be done if lightly loaded. The aileron roll is a 1G if done correctly. What we see with the C130 here is what are called wingovers.. they are about 1.5 to 2G so well withing the capabilities of the airframe.
@@frankish5314 Even still, not an easy maneuvre to successfully pull off, but a very easy one to screw up!!
@@DigBipper188 Well I have never done it in a large airplane but in trained hands the manouver itself is quite simple. We used to teach the wingover to aerobatic students in order to "wake their feet up". I.e most of the time you fly an airplane with minmal rudder inputs. But in aerobatic flying there are much larger inputs that have to be coordinated with other flight controls. The Wingover was perfect for that.
It's not just inverted, it makes a whole loop
Well, he kind of rolled out of the loop at the end, but it's still damn good flying. I love that airframe.
Oh no wait, he looped again. That time, it was 100% full loop. Wow.
Obviously u dont know what that much about the airframe pr the manuevers or even what inverted means ... Let me explain in lameness term.... A AIRCRAFT INVERTED MEANS IT IS FLYING UPSIDE DOWN ... DOESNT MATTER HOW LONG.... and if u wanna know the truth about aircraft flying inverted... THAN YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS.. NO AIRCRAFT WETHER IT BE FIXED WING OR ROTORWING OR EVEN HOBBYCRAFT CAN SUSTAIN A INVERTED FLIGHT ... THUA THEY HAVE TO DO LOOPS.... AND THUS IT LOOKS LIKE ITS NOT DOING ANY INVERTED FLIGHTS.... BUT ILL HAVE YOU KNOW THE C5 THAT THE U.S. AIRFORCE FLYS has also done inverted flights AND NOONE THOUGHT THAT PLANE WOULD EVEN FLY IN THE FIRST PLACE
You say THAN YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS.. NO AIRCRAFT WETHER IT BE FIXED WING OR ROTORWING OR EVEN HOBBYCRAFT CAN SUSTAIN A INVERTED FLIGHT
well aircraft may and have been sustaining inverted flight pal. maybe not all but the ones can may and have been. the main problem is -1 G on aircraft components especially the engine, most engines can sustain inverted flight for a short duration and military crafts have oil reservuars etc for negative G or inverted flight for longer durations. In a loop you never have negative g thus if the airframe permits, and you have enough speed, you can loop anything including helicopters. You can do inverted flight with RC copters and nearly all hobbycraft and nearly all military aircraft so what you talk about is just a bit misinformation.

Incredible that such a huge 'plane can loop the loop !
I have a deep and abiding love for the Hercules. I watched one land on a highway in the desert of Saudi Arabia, drop the ramp, and spit out pallets of cargo as it rolled down the road, then the ramp went up and it took off. From landing to takeoff was maybe five minutes.
They came along the Coquet Valley flying low every other day,in Northumberland,UK,a few years back,on training sorties, and they were flying lower than the altitude of my static caravan,in the valley.
I think it was the build-up to the Iraq war,and a few times I watched two Tornadoes dog-fighting and attacking them,as the mighty beast rolled and banked all the way up the valley ...amazing to watch...literally hedge-hopping like the Lancasters of old.
We had our own daily Air display looking over the valley, sadly for my Wife and Myself,ill-health took over and we had to abort our Caravan holidays..but the training still goes on..with Typhoons no doubt!!
Great video of a great machine and Pilot! Thanks for posting it Mate!![and ignore stupid ignorant childish comments from X-box pilots!!]
I have flown in these a few times with the British Army. Once did a tactical night pick up by a US special forces C130 in total darkness with the pilot using night vision goggles. The aircraft was totally Matt Black with no markings. The American loadmasters got us on and off in double quick time and we’re very professional. I felt totally safe with them.
Lockheed better buy him gold watch....... that was amazing, and shows that most any airplane can do many aerobatic maneuvers as long as you maintain the proper energy/airspeed, stay within g-load tolerances and of course have sufficient altitude. Old/Bold pilots.... I can't imagine what the crew's pre-flight briefing was like.......
Courtland Blake ...lol. well, the new J models are 2 man crews empty. wonder if he was actually flying single seat that day? 🤣
This pilot is obviously in control, keeping up the speed and lift.. But I keep flashing back to that B-52 crash in Fairchild AFB in 1994...
Me too....scary
I think a big part of the difference is this aircraft uses ailerons for roll , whereas the B-52H in the 1994 crash used spoilerons. But, either way, as you said speed/lift is the key difference.
And...AND! that b52 pilot was a hotdog ass. everyone who ever let him get away with his stupid cowboy crap got fired. he exceeded the 52 max capabilities consistently, until that last flight.
Like to see the numbers, that is some serious wing loading.
the g-forces must have been insane
Like the B-52 when you build something that is just so good you keep using it. C-130 is about 65 years old now. Amazing!!
Now THAT'S how you sell airplanes! An airshow routine that Tex Johnston or Bob Hoover would be proud of! Amazing to watch, thx for upload, subbed.
sonex413 ...wonder if lockheed ever tried this in the US. gotta love those airplane crazy Brit cousins of ours! 😎. they just cheer you on when ur trying crazy s**t. lol
I met the pilot who pulled that loop. I work at LM and he was touring the assembly line, talking to people and giving out autographed pictures of the inverted C130. Funny though, the picture has all clouds in it and there's no reference in it to see that the plane is inverted but you can see the elevator is all the way up.
Dang, pls check airframe after these maneuvers! Impressive Aircraft and piloting!
Probably one of the most innovative fighter designs.
LOL you could stick a big honking radar on it and load it to the gills with AMRAAMs, that sort of "missile boat" concept has been considered before.
Awesome. There used to be a time where a looping was considered 'stunt flying'. Now even a Hercules can do one.. Times are a changin'...
The C130 has ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO DO IT, it just took a pilot and crew willing to perform the loop.
@@BoeingFE No, I think only J models can do this.

I never imagined these huge planes could be so agile in flight.
Jan, they can do more than that...Just not allowed to.....
When I enlisted in the USAF in 71 the 130 was called the fabulous 4 engine fighter
The C-130 first flew less than 10 years after WWII. It is still in production. I love the design philosophy. Over the years just change what needs to be changed or improved.
This reminds of the Soyuz booster (R7). The Russians have only ever flown cosmonauts on one rocket. They have just tweaked it over the years when needed. We have gone through Atlas, Titan, 2 Saturns, Shuttle, and are now developing SLS to recapture capabilities lost when we chunked the Saturn program. We did put men on the moon but we have a tendency to cancel good programs to go with the "new" thing. If the Saturn program had been kept with its mix and match components and new stages developed as needed, the 21st century Saturn would not be the 1960s Saturn, but we would never had to start from scratch like we are now doing with SLS. OK got to vent a little this morning. Thanks.
👍
and that ladies and gentlemen is exactly how one flies a 130!
Very beautiful maneuver....!! It's crazy! Every day I fall more in love with these super machines 😍
i would have never believed it if someone told me a c130 can do a loop to loop
You ever seen Bob Hoover flying his Shrike Commander? If not, you gotta check it out. Dead stick loops and 16 point rolls. He also pours a cup of tea while doing a roll. He was insanely good.
It's a loop or an inside loop more precisely loop the loop isn't really used
I stand corrected,thank you
One of the most successful, versitile, long lasting and reliable work horses ever built.
WOW !!!! What an airplane. I always liked the Herc. Have spent many hrs. in one traveling from various base to base.
So I’m TDY at Nellis AFB one time, picking up pieces of one of our squadrons F-15 that the pilot flew into the ground while making an attack on a helicopter during a Red Flag. Took a couple of days.
Met a girl in a local bar who claimed she was a C-130 crewmen and they were practicing “nap of the earth” flying at Nellis to avoid SAMs. If they had to pop over a hill or ridge line, the downhill side meant they were pulling negative G’s and since the plane could not take as many negative g’s as it could take positive g’s, it increased their exposure time at a point when they were the most vulnerable.
The solution was to roll the plane near the peak so it was upside down, fly downhill doing positive G’s and then roll it back upright on the backside of the hill. She claimed they were doing this with a old tank strapped down in the hold. Never got to confirm it with my own eyes but did see some 130s with old tanks in them.
Pilots are pretty crazy.
+Well it did not look like inverted flight to me but rather a loop. But he still had me gasp a couple of times. Glad he was able to pull it off.
Pretty basic well controlled maneuvers
In order to complete a loop what is the term for what you would be considered right at the apex? 😁

I like the stoppie on the first landing
I did a couple of loops about 25 years ago in a Stearman Bi-Plane. Like crop dusters. The Red Barron crew that promotes the pizza came through my city. I had sold 300 pizza in two hours at Sams so they took me up in one plane and my son in another. They had fun with me! Scared the poop out of me! It was great after I realized I had lived through it.
Impressive wing load. The C130 gets better and better with time.
Johnny Tsangaris the KC-390 is better
But, will it still be in production 60 years from now???
Just like the county fair.
Stay below 2 Gs on the wing loading and you can do anything.

This is why you don't mothball this excellent aircraft.

I guess the people who thumbed this down we're expecting craptastic Muzak played so loudly you couldn't hear the engines, or work for Airbus...
It was AOC and friends
I think that the downthumbers realized how the camera was rotated during the loop, by staring at the suspiciously isotropic cloud pattern seen in the maneuver.
I liked the nose gear pop-up at the end.... pilot has a sense of humor! Well done!

The Herc can do just about anything, below 700 mph. The trick is to not stall and/or lose lift. You can bet that everything in that aircraft was strapped down, that includes pockets. Well done, Wayne !!
