  • The Philippines is holding presidential elections on 9 May and they are set to be highly controversial.
    Among the main candidates are the daughter of the country's notorious outgoing president, the son of a former dictator and a world-famous boxer.
    The presidential election will take place on Monday alongside elections for Congress and regional governments.
    The key election issues are how to revive the country's economy from a sharp recession brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, and how to stamp out corruption in public office.

    The experiences of Martial law victims and the fall of the Philippine economy have been acknowledged and remembered for years, This will always accompany the Marcos name, however, due to the rise of social media use, experiences of other filipinos who did not get a chance to express their experiences back then are now able to do so particularly our older family members who would have testified positively and strongly to the differences in ordinary people's lives back then. It is only now that the other side of this narrative has been explored as main stream media outlets have only highlighted the negative effects for the past 30+ years. History will never be changed, other narratives are just needed to be heard and acknowledged too.

    • @bernadettealano5293
      @bernadettealano5293 Před 2 lety +9

      The popularity of Bong Bong Marcos to the masses can also be attributed to his main idea of promoting unity to the country. Something that the filipinos are longing to see from both a president and vice president for a while now if both elected. Track records and educational attainments are something that people would usually go for during election however due to name and family influence up to this present day, the Marcoses (not only Bong bong) will always be remembered. Just like any job applications not only in the Philippines but in all over the world, unfortunately its "who you know" and not "what you know", and that's the reality wherever we go. on the ground 😛in which case, BongBong Marcos got the referral from Sara Duterte, the president's daughter. A prominent figure due to her name and influence from the mid and southern part of the country.

      There is a video of a priest who joined the New People's Army back in the 70's and he said that during PFEM's time, their #s were decreasing because most of their members were scared for their life and decided to leave. He even said he thought for sure he was going to die in there because he decided to stay. He then proceeded to say that the New People's Army gained power and strength again 2 months after Cory sat as President and that the statistics that the Cory Administration claimed of the judicial killings under Martial Law was lower compared to the statistics of how many people were killed by the New People's Army themselves. Babies/kids/families of poor innocent people were killed when they refused to cower or join the army. Thousands of lives lost up to this day yet Leni has not advocated for any of them. She wants to abolish the CPP NTF ELCAC that is trying to stop the New People's Army and any group that is against and raging war against the government.

But all the fake news and history revision that they didn't nip in the bud before it grew to this massive problem we're now facing is the one to blame. We didn't honour those who suffered in the past enough and we didn't make sure no one forgot. You might say we were ridden by leftover debt then do a "Gloria move" -Build on What You Have ,at least she helped usher the BPO era we are enjoying right now even surpassing former BPO King India (that's her legacy). You might say the OFW surge now - we are outright encouraging the perception that PH is a giant manpower agency for global sweatshops and households and your proud on banking on the desperation of Filipinos to get a job to feed their families anywhere even if it is was in Mars if there was. What happened to our food supply security initiative after IRRI and 1985 established PhilRice Institutes got silenced , those who did co-researches from Vietnam and Thailand utilized the technology in their country and now we import rice from them. We could go on and on with the failures due to vengeance politics. Common Filipinos are tired of the rhetoric of intellectuals about Maslow's social needs who don't worry where they gonna get their next meal when they can utilize the system for those who can demonstrate results like Duterte's Infrastructure Build Build Build ushering multiple FDIs equals more jobs and business opportunities for the common Filipinos. The debate where some of the panelists later said that "a candidate asked who the panelists are and when told, the candidate then said to take that panelist out because they don't particularly like the person" and when they did take the panelist out, the candidate then proceeded to ask for a list of advanced questions but when told they can't do that, the candidate still said ok but then the day of the debate, the candidate backed out last minute. But lo and behold, during the live debate, a lot of people saw that candidate in the live chat "watching". When BBM skipped the bias debate, he was out there meeting with the people and asking them questions about how he can help and what suggestions the people has for him to serve and help them better.

    It's very strange that these reports only highlight the plundered money. Yes, it's a significant amount that could've gone a long way into actually improving the lives of Filipinos across the board instead of it sitting in the pockets of that family and their cronies. In addition to that, however, they've stolen lives and freedoms during martial law to silence people and instill fear: from activists, journalists, political opponents and ordinary citizens. This is the kind of trauma that is not easily remedied, and the trove of technical knowledge, skills, wisdom and talents can no longer be passed down to the next generation because those who would've done so are dead or intimidated into silence. That family has not only bankrupted the country's coffers, but they've also cleaned out a trove of intellectual and cultural capital that could've helped future generations. The impact of martial law is more than just the money, and we're all suffering for it.

For the past 30 years, her peers, the yellows haven't done anything but fight in their govt offices. Do you think she would have a name in politics if her husband wasn't killed in the plane crash? Look at the infrastructures in the Philippines before Duterte's time, it hasn't changed; the people are still scrapping for what was left during Marcos' regime. Look at the Manila Bay, how come Duterte was able to clean it up and make a tourist spot out of it? Where was the money for the environment during Ninoy Aquino's time? For the past 30 years, the yellows and now pinks have used the Philippine resources to get the rich richer and poor poorer. You don't need to look further, malls in the Philippines are surrounded by slums, dark alleys, pagpag vendors, and big canals full garbages.
    Since the start of her campaign, Leni and her camp have been throwing trash at Marcos, just watched how she answered Boy Abunda's interview and compare it to the other candidates; that woman has a vile heart. If she wins, it'll be like Cory Aquino all over again, another puppet of the oligarchs.

If you are in your right mind i will not invest in a country where i will NOT have a FULL control of my business. Foreign business need to find a wealthy Filipino businessman? Oh yes! The OLIGARCH, where the money of the country belongs to them and filipinos only gave a freaking $10 per 8hrs of work, this is the reason filipinos will remain POOR for the rest of their life, the new generation understand this and saw the change when duterte took the presidency duterte collides head to head with the OLIGARCH. Filipinos perceive Bongbong Marcos as the "lesser evil" because Cory Aquino and her "Yellow" allies obstructed necessary reforms that would've cemented the good legacy of the EDSA Revolution which rid the Marcoses of their power. Ordinary Filipinos barely felt any form of prosperity past the Marcos era as the Philippines moved forward with the same flawed system of government under a protectionist economy, something which professors and world leaders by the likes of Lee Kuan Yew pointed out. Because of the Philippines' stagnant development over the decades, the Marcos loyalists (emphasis on "loyalists") are using the "golden age" narrative to further encourage the idea that the Philippines was better off with the Marcoses.
    It didn't help that Cory's son, Noynoy Aquino had a flawed six years of leadership as president. This further cemented the people's hatred for the Yellows and it led to the landslide win of the current president Rodrigo Duterte in the elections that followed.
    VP Robredo used to be associated with Noynoy's Liberal Party and she's a vocal opposition to Pres. Duterte's adminstration. That, and with her allies that are Yellow meant the people are rather encouraged to vote for Bongbong Marcos out of spite, despite Leni running independent. This is why many people are saying that "BBM is winning because Leni decided to run".
    I see the Marcoses' return to popularity as a mere byproduct of the Yellows' self-righteousness and self-interests getting in the way of any attempts by presidents Fidel Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (who were both associated with the Yellows by the way) in fixing the flawed 1987 Constitution. This very constitution led to them making the same mistakes under Ninoy, and now It can't be helped that BBM is bound to win this election. They said that the current constitution should prevent another Marcos presidency but with the systems enshrined in it, it only enabled corruption and political dynasties to keep on thriving and look where we are right now, Bongbong Marcos is now waltzing his way into Malacañang.
    People are expecting history to repeat itself. That Bongbong Marcos will once again endanger Philippine democracy and will rule as a dictator like his father. That the Philippines will further succumb to debt and poverty. Others see a radical change, obstructionists coming to their senses, and the birth of a new, Sixth Republic under a new, better constitution.

      @Xinnie the Pooh and they say investors will leave if BBM wins. Xi Jinping is an authoritarian leader yet China is filled with foreign investments. Foreign investors won't care as to who is the leader as long as the laws enable them to operate and do business. Besides, I fail to see how much the economy will improve under Leni when the Yellow ringleaders only want to empower the oligarchs by leaving the 60/40 policy untouched. It disgust me that the framers of the flawed 1987 Constitution are endorsing her.

    Correction, there was only one frontrunner here and it is Bongbong Marcos. Plus its not just Sara that made them win or their "famous" family names, the people love them and they can see a better future in their leadership and there are also a lot of factors affecting why a lot of people chose them. After ousting FEM, the government promised a "better Philippines" but then, it stayed as just a promise. And when they saw. the leadership of PRRD with such a high trust rating, ofcourse the people would want someone that will continue PRRD's projects and not someone who definitely opposed him, and just criticized through his term and definitely the people sees that as a factor of voting BBM also, they want the development to continue. The only reason why kakampinks does not acknowledge his qualifications, and why the opposition party is campaigning against him and putting all of those things on the flyers they distribute is the fact that he is a Marcos, his father is FEM, his mother is Imelda Marcos, basically he is from the family of Marcoses, that of course had a dark past in the Philippine History. And I think one of the things that also made a lot of people love him is because they saw how different he is than that of how the media depicted their image, which basically not everybody really sees but a lot of people have already realized that the family of the Marcoses are good people and are really passionate on public service, you know serving the filipinos. They didn't just ran and won you know, they also campaign just like normal candidates and like how can you say the election is fraud? So now the supporters of the opposition are now rallying on the streets and saying "MARCOS DUWAG" to say they don't accept the incoming Marcos-Duterte admin. I mean they are like rallying against the 30 million people who voted for the two compared to their 14, 15 million votes.
