I get you, I habe been listening, thinking I wasn't that dumb, or naive... but when Felicia finally found someone she felt was her intellectual equal, that hit close to home. There's a button for everyone, I guess.
@Ann Weirdkauz I guess I'm just not that trusting. It wouldn't matter if her father was in jail or not, but that is a factor. Of course, she's going to believe he's innocent, that's her father, so I'm not going to believe that she really knows the facts behind his incarceration. I just met her and don't really know her, and I sure as hell don't know him. It's not like they were family or lifelong friends. They just met in college. He had no other family or friends? That whole thing would have set off alarm bells on my head. I don't want a complete stranger living with me.
I was in group therapy for a short time years ago. It was creepy. The psychologist who led it had control over the people in the group. They say that the reason group therapy is so powerful is because it replicates the family. I was kicked out of group therapy because I refused to cry when I talked about my ex-husband. I got into the group for therapy and it turned out to be harmful rather than help.
I went to a sleep away trip to the forest with a group in college that was supposed to unite international and local students. The trip started with a very intense group trauma sharing session, where people shared some of the most emotionally disturbing stories I’ve ever heard in one room. People would then praise and love bomb that person for sharing. Each one almost seemed to one up the next, and I felt pressured to relive my worst moments and started imagining them as even worse. This lasted for hours. At the end of this very intense session everyone just split up and I was left in a near suicidal dissociative trance for the weekend. I couldn’t process those hours, and felt such whiplash at having shared such intense stories and then being left alone. I wandered off into the woods at one point in the middle of the night and just sat there for hours which is incredibly out of character for me. Group “therapy” can be incredibly destabilizing! I’ve never actually been suicidal but the first year away at college is an especially vulnerable time. There were also other parts of the sleepaway trip which induced this mental instability: very thin blankets and no heating, mandatory late night meetings followed by very early mornings, minimal access to food, very cliquish social dynamics, etc. If someone charismatic had offered me manipulative support at that time, I could have been swayed.
This kind of brainwashing works with lonely, troubled people with no end of insecurities regardless of how much they've studied or how intelligent they are. Wish that there was some type of mandatory awareness for this at school already. The amount of people that would benefit from that....

This is a prime example of narcissistic abuse. This is the EXACT description of a narcissist and it’s scary at how far someone with a narcisstic mindset could go.

This was definitely a good one to share with us! Mental manipulation isn’t talked about enough, yet it’s more common than we know! This is an extreme case, but this happens in everyday relationships and friendships all the time! I hope you get to make more videos on these topics. It’s so fascinating and real!💜

honestly, this makes a lot of sense to me. when you're 18-22, you start testing your parents' values against everyone else's. at that stage of life, if you meet a former inmate who happens to also be charming and fatherly, you're way more likely to think "well crime is a social construct anyways and he seems like a good dude. my parents wouldn't understand, so there's no reason to tell them about it."

I watched the documentary and the videos of the kids after Larry’s coercion and manipulation was very alarming and disgusting. I really felt for Santos and his sisters when they were finally well enough to see each other and their parents again. I hope their relationship heals.
