This is the perfect Bible movie. It’s not preachy, and tells the account it’s based on in a accurate, yet truly epic way. It’s tame enough to be a kids movie, but doesn’t beat around the bush for anything at all. It’s very clear there is death and suffering, and it’s honestly really brutal, but it manages to walk that fine line between too mature and too kid friendly.
I like how it’s still not trying to be too secular though, the songs like deliver us and through heavens eyes are decently religious while still being able to be enjoyed by a larger audience.
The fact that Moses vocals are almost solely backed by woodwinds and strings and so wistful and sad and Ramses’s anger and hurt bring in the brass and horns is such a great composing touch. And the God verses being the percussion pushing all of it forward and forcing the whole song / confrontation in the movie to a head is just incredible. This is such a good piece of music
And also that Moses is singing in the parallel major key (G Minor vs G Major) while the voice of God is in minor. And then Rameses is singing in the relative major key (same notes in the scale as the voice of God) showing that he wants to connect to his brother, but is also doubling down on not letting the Hebrews go. It’s an absolutely masterful composition.
Love this song but i have always found funny how Mosses is singing sad because he hates all this suffering while god is screaming how he will torture all of Egypt in every possible way because of one man's actions.
@@su_patatita_1951 Except it wasn't really one man. Rameses alone could not keep the Hebrews enslaved and murder their firstborn sons. Rameses might have been the head of Egypt, but plenty of Egyptians were willing to be his hands.
i love how there's a whole choir singing for god??? it's multilayered with deep and high voices and voices in between and idk i just find it super cool that instead of having one dude sing for god they had a whole choir :D

All of these except the 7th and the 9th can all be explained as the side effects of Algae overpopulation, which somehow makes this even more terrifying knowing that something like this could happen in a freak occurrence at anytime

you know, when you hear "dreamworks bible movie musical" you would think it would be a disaster, but this movie is one of my absolute favorites of all time and one of the best i have ever seen.

I feel like regardless of your religion or possibly lack thereof, nobody can deny the moving artfulness of The Prince of Egypt. The struggle mixed with the hopefulness as well as animation is continuously moving...not to mention how every song is an absolute bop

The interpretation is often to criminalize Ramses in this scenario but I actually believe that this song humanizes him. "How could you have come to hate me so, is this what you wanted?" is one of the most beautiful lines in the movie. Ramses always saw Moses as his brother and felt somewhat inferior to him but nevertheless maintained his love for him, even after Moses abandoned both him and his country for decades. He then returns only to ask for the destruction of his empire because of a God that Ramses never believed in. It's pretty tragic. Moses doesn't even want to do this, he knows how destructive this is and what he is doing to the relationship with his brother. That's why this is the most profound moment in the movie.
It's to do both. You empathize with Ramses because you know it's his father's abuse that fuels his actions now and you can tell how much he and Moses both wish they could just be brothers again, however that doesn't excuse his continued slavery of innocent people. His empire was wrong to begin with. He was unable to realize that because he was raised believing it was okay.
Najada Maria I think it, partly at least, had to do with how much more strict his father was with him than with Moses. He even says at one point, “Why is it that when you do something, I’m the one getting blamed for it?” which implies that Moses is scolded less often or less severely than him (which we do see in the movie). To me, this could lead him to feel that maybe Moses is the more favored child. (And this could be a reach, but I also think the scene where their Mother finds Moses is forshadowing this dynamic, by showing Rameses being quickly put down in favor of Moses and his mother being too distracted to see when he asked to be picked back up again).
What I find interesting about this song is how in terms of tone it sounds more like a villain song than a heroic one. It doesn't sugar coat things, it depicts the plagues and God's will as an awful curse upon the land, intended to destroy and subjugate all who oppose it. Really captures the wrath of old testament God.
The New Testament God was just as mighty and willing to execute justice. Jesus gave many warnings about the final judgement of sin. And the Reveletion is pretty wild too.

Each plague is worse than the last. The locusts were number 8 for a reason. When these things decide to swarm, they are completely unstoppable even in this day and age. Seeing a huge swarm like that coming down from the sky and devouring any and all plant life in its way must have truly felt like you angered a divine being.
This was my favourite song from the movie, especially from 1:57 I was obsessed with ancient Egypt and on Pharaoh's side!!!! 😈 I would replay that scene for hours because I loved the chills. My siblings liked the other parts 😂 hahaha
I suppose I never thought about how much it really pained Moses to be God’s advocate. He was seeing his childhood home destroyed because of his brother’s pride. The story often skips over that part. But I like how in this song they specifically mention how heartbroken Moses was. But Moses’ trust and loyalty to God have him the strength to continue. And God used him in an amazing way because of his faithfulness and willingness to to God’s will. If you ever feel like God is leading you to do something difficult, remember that Moses did the same thing and God used him to save an entire people group.
@@AngelVocal I think gluttony involves the indulgence of the body, examinations of the mind might fall under a different category if they indeed fall into a category of sin. Pride is considered the greatest sin because it can cause great harm both to the person with pride and those around them.
I love how even though this was a children's movie, it didn't sugar coat the story, which made it even better. They just went straight into it, and showed how even the 'antagonist' figure in the story had been given pain by the 'protagonist'. All in all, it was great how they illustrated that there was no real protagonist or antagonist when they fought, and compared to other movies that just give a plain clear hero and villain, this was awesome.
@@jamestran1634 Only in the U.S.A. Nearly everywhere else, people realize that animation is simply another storytelling technique. Saying "just an animated movie" is like saying "just a live-action movie." A movie's a movie.
I mean, Moses is 100% portrayed as the hero. Moses is reluctantly carrying out the will of his God in order to free his people from slavery, while Rameses is sacrificing thousands of his own people in order to keep working Moses's people to death. Moses feeling bad about it doesn't make it ambiguous.
Can we appreciate that Ralph Fiennes gave his everything for this movie? He even did his own singing. It’s not a particularly challenging song on his part, I know, but still.
2:07 "let my heart be hardened, and never mind how high the cost may grow." is a great line. The boom in the voice actor's voice feels so ambitious and bold and stubborn. I can't articulate it well enough but it's a fantastic song!
My favourite bit is the whispers of "thus saith the lord, thus saith the lord" in the beginning. It's really foreboding. Also did you know that each of the plagues was in contrast to one Egyptian god? Like the darkness cancelling out Ra, the god of the sun.
Yeah, that was the other point of the plagues, apart from fulfilling God's prophesy to Abraham in Genesis 15:13-14, to disprove the gods of Egypt and prove JEHOVAH, the One True God, to be God. Do you know the Salvation Plan of God, and the LORD Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior?

Trust me, I was already freaked out enough by the whole package that I didn't care if I understood the lyrics, I knew that it was bad. Now all grown up and fully fluent in english, now I can truly appreciate the song.
1:42 God I love Moses' singing voice so much- it's so expressive and strong. This "Let my people goooooo" part is so good. I mean, the whole song is amazing but this part just gives me all the goosebumps 😊
One bit I never noticed as a child that terrifies me now with the gravity of the concept is at 1:19... 'such as the world has never seen'. Said in such dark connotation it really sends a chill down my spine after processing it. This song really captured the wrath of God.
+PrimRue7 yes it was written in Exodus 9:12 that God hardened the heart of Pharaoh so that the plagues would pursue, and that the greatness and power of God would be shown. Yes, it is for the glory of God but I think, it is also His way to show His people his power and make them trust Him during their exodus to the promised land. Anyhow, who are we to question the ways of God, and that same God in the old testament is the same God in the new testament till now, and in the future...
+PrimRue7 in context to the plagues. After God had Joseph save Egypt from famine and then have Egypt turn the people of their savior into slaves, it's kinda easy to see why it was so extreme. And it wasn't without warning.

I always thought of it as the Angels repeating God's words. Cause we hear God's actual voice in the burning bush scene. But these voices are male and female and sound nothing like him.
Which makes sense considering this takes place AFTER the story of Joseph, in which god literally made Egypt PROSPER and FLOURISH under the hand of Joseph, one of his chosen prophets... only for the Egyptians to turn around and enslave his chosen people. 'No longer safe' indeed.

One thing I really like about this movie is how it captures the power and _otherworldlyness_ of God. He's never portrayed as strong in Bible stories. He's just some sky daddy that makes your life better or something. Even in the Old Testament, it kinda skips over how savage and hardcore God would get. But this movie shows Old Testament God how he truly must've been like. How He should be. Right off the bat this establishes the force Pharaoh is trying to fight against. The almost ethereal chorus, the barely audible "since you refuse to free my people" and even quieter "the plagues" followed by a cacophony of anger shows the majesty of the misery that's inflicted upon the Egyptians. The anger isn't vitriolic or hateful, in fact, it has this dimension of magnificence to it. But it's strong and unstoppable. Even when Moses gets to sing, he immediately stops when the chorus begins again. As though he can't sing over it. This being isn't messing around. Our brains can barely wrap around the concept of Him, and he's pouring out the barest cup of what he can bring. Pharaoh was the barest imitation of God, and THIS is the real thing. This is the living God. The beat of "thus sayth the Lord" repeated over and over by Moses and the chorus just reinforces how _powerful_ this God is. He decrees what happens. He calls down the Plagues. He calls down the locusts, the sores, the cows, the death that this will bring. He controls life itself, not Horus, not Set, not Ra, He darkens the sun. He kills the firstborn. He chooses His people. And Pharaoh will break, he will yield. Or else.
Ugh, I love when people express their interpretations and analysis of things like songs or movies. It just shows how attentive they are to little details that gives the song (or scene) so much more character and power.

It gets even more interesting when you realize, Ramses thought it was all Moses' fault. He wasn't even paying attention to the fact that God was behind this, he just blamed all of the pain and suffering on Moses. (You who I called brother, how could you have come to hate me so? Is this what you wanted...) Moses says "Thus saith the Lord, let My (the Lord's)people go," and Ramses says, "I will not let your (Moses') people go."
Ramses thought he was god (morning & evening star), so naturally he thought Moses was trying to be god too, even if he made it obvious that he said the God of the Jews was with him. I always find the dynamic of Rameses interesting, he truly did not think what he was doing was wrong. He also truly loved his brother.
LOL I feel that, this came out when I was a teen and I didn't watch it then. I heard this song a year or two ago and fell in love and rocked it constantly. I was cooking, cleaning and blasting this!
This movie is so fucking underrated. Seriously. Not only is every musical number immaculate but this movie signified the transition between hand painted animation and SGI (as Disney was bringint Toy Story to light and upping the technological field). In case you don't know the truth of God, and His Salvation Plan, and/or haven't been saved, here it is so you may- God is very real and a three-fold God, the Holy Trinity(God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). After Creation was made by God, humans were originally innocent of sin, but after the first two, Adam and Eve, sinned against God, God the Father sent His Son, Jesus Christ(God the Son), to fulfill all His prophecies about the coming Messiah(who would be humankind's redeemer of sin) revealed in the Old Testament that had to be fulfilled on Jesus' first trip here and to die as the perfect sacrifice for humanity's sins for all time, which Jesus did by living a completely sinless life in prayer and service to the Father(before this, animals were sacrificed continually to get man used to the idea of the perfect sacrifice that Jesus would be, but these sacrifices were imperfect and couldn't cleanse away sin, yet God would forgive them their sins for their obedience to Him in making those sacrifices), and three days after His sacrifice, Jesus rose from the grave resurrected in His perfect, glorified body(original form in Heaven before He came to Earth) as a sign from the Father that His sacrifice had been accepted on our behalf. The sins(all but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit(God the Holy Spirit) ) of all humanity, both back then and today, were paid for Eternally with His sacrifice so that we could be reborn(spiritually) into the family of God through being baptized with the Holy Spirit by, after realizing you're a sinner in need of Eternal Salvation to avoid eternal damnation, accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior by sincerely believing in Him to be the Son of God who died for our sins(with this His perfect sacrifice as payment for our sin debt to God on our behalf), and that He rose from the grave. You must believe this in your heart and confess it by mouth. Doing so, we are born again into the family of God and will dwell with Him in Eternity. This is the only way you can go to Heaven, and all it takes to be there. Plain and simple. If you have never heard this, the Salvation Plan of God, before, you have now, and will at some point make one or the other of two choices; Accept Christ as your Lord and Savior for the reasons I've already said when called on by the Holy Spirit to get saved, or reject Him. I really do want for you to be with me, my brethren, and God in Eternity, and implore you to make the correct choice and accept Christ when the times comes that you're called. If you do accept Christ, and follow His Will for your life, the world will persecute you at some point for standing for Him. It won't always be an easy life while your still in this world, but the rewards in Eternity and being with God will more than make it worth it in this life. When Jesus rose from the grave in His glorified form, He made Himself known to His remaining disciples and, before returning to Heaven, said He would go now to prepare a place for those who accept Him to stay in Heaven with Him, and when you die(if you get saved before that) you will be rewarded in accordance with how well you served to Him in this life. There is even more than this to come after, but we can talk about that in future messages if you want to reply. Regarding Eternity with God though, its really as simple as what I've written in this message. If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them if you reply. However, I'll not argue the truth of Scripture with you, and If you reply denying the truth of what I've said or contradicting it, I'll ignore you.

All the movies based on christian stories normally do pretty badly, except this one, and its really darn good. Nice music, nice animation, some of the parts make u feel like crying or feel like a badass. It explains the story of Moses pretty well too, since i can get bored reading sometimes.
My question is why you are going around the comment section asking practically much everyone the same question. Also, may as well answer your own question after asking mine, even though I know I will get the classic 'you will burn in hell' speech or something. While having been born to a catholic family, I am no longer catholic due to, you know, actually looking into the old testament and seeing how much of a monster god is. From what I remember of the times I went to church as a child and from what I remember of the new testament, Jesus was cool, though, he acts a lot more like a Buddhist then a Jewish person of the time so...
listening to this reminds me of how at the beginning of the movie Moses inadvertedly foretold this. He said "I can see it now... there go the pyramids. " as a joke and he also said something on the lines of "You will single handedly manage to bring down one the most powerful empire on earth. " It's absolutely beautiful... this whole movie really.

Even when I was a kid, I knew these songs were phenomenal. Fast-forward several years later, and now I have the musical background to fully appreciate just how amazing these songs are.
whether or not you believe this story is true or not, have to admit it is one heck of a story. Even in terms of poetic irony, the darkness, a slight at the sun god Ra, the Nile turning to blood a slight to Sobek god of the Nile, its that way for all the plagues a jab at one of the Egyptian gods.
Refuses to believe the story is true won't change the fact it is though, and yes these plagues JEHOVAH used as a means of Divine Judgement for both Egypt's abuse of His people, and Egypt's idolatry, by way of using these plagues to mock and disprove their idols. The way I see the story that no one is really right in this situation, the pharaoh is going to his gods which he was raised from birth to believe in and when they don’t he feels betrayed and blocks out the world, Moses who was forced into this position in cruel irony eventually leading to him dropping the sea to consume the Egyptians, and Yahweh for he slaughtered children in the dead of night and hardened the pharaohs heart.

I just noticed this, if you listen to the final line, when Moses sings, it sounds like everyone is behind him whereas when Rameses sings, only him can be heard.
It’s intentionally made as Rameses comes in slightly earlier than Moses. Another interesting thing to note is that Moses parts of the song is ‘All I ever wanted’ with different lyrics. This matches with a scene later where Moses enters his old home in similar shots to ‘All I ever wanted’.
"Into your dreams, into your sleep, until you break, until you heed" always gets me tbh- it really shows how Moses is carrying through the word of god despite it's obvious intensity- and the 'until you break until you heed' really shows that God is an intense order- and if you do not heed, the plagues will continue on. like many other commenters here, i am glad this song didnt sugar coat the gravity of the story being told. i really love this song

Jesus Jimenez I agree, you don’t need to be religious to enjoy the movie. As a non religious person, I actually enjoyed the movie, because I’ve seen it three times.
When he says 'never mind how high the cost may grow' I just think about what terrible ruling that is. People and animals are dying and sickness is plaguing the land, and there is a clear solution to the problem. Let the hebrew people go and it will stop. By letting this happen, he became the weak link in the chain his father had talked about. His subjects are dying and his pride is why.
Keep in mind Pharaoh had no choice in the matter. God himself says that he will harden Pharaoh's heart in order to ensure that he refuses to let the jews go.
What makes this song even better is that the VA for Moses and God (Val Kilmer) leads the chorus, so it sounds like Moses is joining the chorus in between the parts where he speaks to Rameses. And, when Rameses says "How could you have come to hate me so? Is this what you wanted?", the chorus once again cuts in (led by Kilmer) with "I sent the swarm, I sent the hoard-" it sounds like God (speaking through Moses) is cursing Egypt, although to Rameses it sounds like Moses himself is cursing the land. Just a nice detail I wanted to point out

This is more than God's wrath though, its God's justice and honest in keeping His Word to Abraham and punishing wickedness(Genesis 15:13-14). Do you know the Salvation Plan of God, and Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord?
Wickedness God put into pharaoh in the first place! Every time pharaoh decided to let the Jews go God decided to "harden his heart" at which point, almost as if he were possessed, he'd recall them. Also i don't know what kind of justice kills who knows how many innocent children.

This song shows something that almost no form of media has ever dared to do, they always show God as the ultimate force of good. Not Prince of Egypt. This movie and the song, show the primordial side of God. Not the wise old mentor with a beard, but a terrifying and wrathful force of Nature. This is what God was before Christianity, before the old Testament. He was not loved, but respected and even feared.
Well, see this is the thing. God has always been on the side of his people. In the old Testement that was the Hebrews. His chosen people. He protects then and guides them. In the old testament he had to help his people carve their place into the world against nations of xenophobic people and prideful empires. In the new Testement, God finally allows the whole of humanity to become his chosen. As long as you believe. The biggest difference is that the Hebrews had God fighting their battles for them. He demonstrated his overwhelming power everyone around them and taught them fear and respect when then forgot it. But now, anyone can be a Christian. The door is open for now so God won't smite anyone because they can always have a change of heart. There have been lots of examples of that. But after this period, after the rapture, the world that remains will be full with only those who didn't listen. Those who are not his chosen. And the God of the old Testement will return to show the world that he does exist. And that he never left.

They weren't necessarily of the tribe(s) of Israel, but just as well they were loved and cherished by the Lord. The first example that comes to mind is Melchizidek the High Priest and King of Salem. There were others, too. It's just that the main goal wasn't to spread the word back then, like you said, it was to fulfill His promises to Abraham who so loved the Lord that he would sacrifice his own son (sound familiar?). His promises to Abraham and his descendants were fulfilled in the nation of Israel and in Jesus Christ, so then He could turn His attention to all the world. I guess my point is, even way back then anyone (as far as I know) could convert to Judaism, which means by the reasoning you laid out He couldn't have smited them because they could come to worship Him. I think you are right about many things you said, but I don't think that possible coming to God is the reason He no longer directly smites people. I think it's that Christ was the final sacrifice which has paid for all sin until we reach judgment day after which if we were faithful servants of God (professing the name of Jesus Christ) or not will determine if judgment is brought down upon us. Primordial isn't quite the right word. But rather his authority as the First Cause, to use an ancient Greek concept. God is the originator and creator of all things, He is the measuring rod of what is right in the most literal sense. His will embodies the proper order of all things. Mankind he gave the ability to make their own choices and they've chosen to defy that order. To worship false gods, to create societies with perverse power structures, to enslave, to exploit, to deceive. For every marvelous thing man does, it is marred by a thousand blemishes. Now we, obviously, can't just go around condemning and executing each other for every imperfection because none of us are perfect either. We don't even have the full picture of the proper order of the universe. God does. And the moment mankind chose to essentially break creation for their own desires, he had no obligation to permit them to continue to exist. That's the level of authority, of power, he occupies. Omnipotent, omnipresent, eternal. There's numerous justifications for the plagues. Generations of oppression of His chosen people, implied betrayal of said people after Egypt made an agreement with Joseph, the culling performed on the Hebrews, Pharoah's stubbornness. But He doesn't *need* any of those. He's been patient with mankind for millenia prior to this point, purely by choice, not any obligation. This sequence doesn't shy away from that fact, the fact that only the deliberate choice of God to be restrained separates man from swift and terrible punishment.

That's because "Prince of Egypt" isn't a children's movie, it's a family movie. There is a difference. A children's movie gives you less as you get older. A family movie, you notice and appreciate more and more the older you get.

When Moses talks about how he wishes things could be different, how he wishes God had chosen someone else instead, I felt so much PAIN for him. Like never before honestly, I watched this movie as a kid and I was just like “ok cool guy who parts the waters and turns a river into blood lol” but rewatching now years later it’s just so much more powerful and devastating for him, I feel for him so much like he HAD to do what God’s plan was even though it took everything from him. But he also was able to bring a new life to everyone including himself :’) such a masterpiece of this story retold, the animation makes it even better
MAN, what a film. I'm no songwriter, but I imagine it is incredibly difficult writing a song that just sounds like an actual battle taking place, but this nails it. And not just a battle, but a battle of the wills. The chorus in the background really brings that feeling of something eternal and massive, and just it incredible. This whole soundtrack is. Way ahead of its time.
Even though I was raised as a Christian my whole childhood I never cared much for it but this was one of my favourite movies as a kid and I have such vivid memory watching it the first time. I was in the hospital and every bed got a TV but nothing interesting was on cable, the lady next to me who had a cross around her neck had a dvd copy of The Prince Of Egypt and when she saw me she asked if I've seen it before and I said no so she gave it to me and I watched it everyday I was in the hospital without even knowing it was about christianity because I didn't know who Moses was and when he talked to God I thought that was normal cause at that age I just assumed everyone knew God

This is the perfect Bible movie.
It’s not preachy, and tells the account it’s based on in a accurate, yet truly epic way. It’s tame enough to be a kids movie, but doesn’t beat around the bush for anything at all. It’s very clear there is death and suffering, and it’s honestly really brutal, but it manages to walk that fine line between too mature and too kid friendly.
Christianity is not a "kind" religion. The buddy Jesus narrative is inaccurate and harmful to the faith.

The fact that Moses vocals are almost solely backed by woodwinds and strings and so wistful and sad and Ramses’s anger and hurt bring in the brass and horns is such a great composing touch. And the God verses being the percussion pushing all of it forward and forcing the whole song / confrontation in the movie to a head is just incredible. This is such a good piece of music
And also that Moses is singing in the parallel major key (G Minor vs G Major) while the voice of God is in minor. And then Rameses is singing in the relative major key (same notes in the scale as the voice of God) showing that he wants to connect to his brother, but is also doubling down on not letting the Hebrews go.
It’s an absolutely masterful composition.
Love this song but i have always found funny how Mosses is singing sad because he hates all this suffering while god is screaming how he will torture all of Egypt in every possible way because of one man's actions.

The interpretation is often to criminalize Ramses in this scenario but I actually believe that this song humanizes him. "How could you have come to hate me so, is this what you wanted?" is one of the most beautiful lines in the movie. Ramses always saw Moses as his brother and felt somewhat inferior to him but nevertheless maintained his love for him, even after Moses abandoned both him and his country for decades. He then returns only to ask for the destruction of his empire because of a God that Ramses never believed in. It's pretty tragic. Moses doesn't even want to do this, he knows how destructive this is and what he is doing to the relationship with his brother. That's why this is the most profound moment in the movie.
It's to do both. You empathize with Ramses because you know it's his father's abuse that fuels his actions now and you can tell how much he and Moses both wish they could just be brothers again, however that doesn't excuse his continued slavery of innocent people.
His empire was wrong to begin with. He was unable to realize that because he was raised believing it was okay.

Najada Maria I think it, partly at least, had to do with how much more strict his father was with him than with Moses. He even says at one point, “Why is it that when you do something, I’m the one getting blamed for it?” which implies that Moses is scolded less often or less severely than him (which we do see in the movie). To me, this could lead him to feel that maybe Moses is the more favored child. (And this could be a reach, but I also think the scene where their Mother finds Moses is forshadowing this dynamic, by showing Rameses being quickly put down in favor of Moses and his mother being too distracted to see when he asked to be picked back up again).
What I find interesting about this song is how in terms of tone it sounds more like a villain song than a heroic one. It doesn't sugar coat things, it depicts the plagues and God's will as an awful curse upon the land, intended to destroy and subjugate all who oppose it. Really captures the wrath of old testament God.

Each plague is worse than the last. The locusts were number 8 for a reason. When these things decide to swarm, they are completely unstoppable even in this day and age. Seeing a huge swarm like that coming down from the sky and devouring any and all plant life in its way must have truly felt like you angered a divine being.

I suppose I never thought about how much it really pained Moses to be God’s advocate. He was seeing his childhood home destroyed because of his brother’s pride. The story often skips over that part. But I like how in this song they specifically mention how heartbroken Moses was. But Moses’ trust and loyalty to God have him the strength to continue. And God used him in an amazing way because of his faithfulness and willingness to to God’s will. If you ever feel like God is leading you to do something difficult, remember that Moses did the same thing and God used him to save an entire people group.

I love how even though this was a children's movie, it didn't sugar coat the story, which made it even better. They just went straight into it, and showed how even the 'antagonist' figure in the story had been given pain by the 'protagonist'. All in all, it was great how they illustrated that there was no real protagonist or antagonist when they fought, and compared to other movies that just give a plain clear hero and villain, this was awesome.

I mean, Moses is 100% portrayed as the hero. Moses is reluctantly carrying out the will of his God in order to free his people from slavery, while Rameses is sacrificing thousands of his own people in order to keep working Moses's people to death. Moses feeling bad about it doesn't make it ambiguous.

+PrimRue7 yes it was written in Exodus 9:12 that God hardened the heart of Pharaoh so that the plagues would pursue, and that the greatness and power of God would be shown. Yes, it is for the glory of God but I think, it is also His way to show His people his power and make them trust Him during their exodus to the promised land. Anyhow, who are we to question the ways of God, and that same God in the old testament is the same God in the new testament till now, and in the future...

One thing I really like about this movie is how it captures the power and _otherworldlyness_ of God. He's never portrayed as strong in Bible stories. He's just some sky daddy that makes your life better or something. Even in the Old Testament, it kinda skips over how savage and hardcore God would get. But this movie shows Old Testament God how he truly must've been like. How He should be.
Right off the bat this establishes the force Pharaoh is trying to fight against. The almost ethereal chorus, the barely audible "since you refuse to free my people" and even quieter "the plagues" followed by a cacophony of anger shows the majesty of the misery that's inflicted upon the Egyptians. The anger isn't vitriolic or hateful, in fact, it has this dimension of magnificence to it. But it's strong and unstoppable. Even when Moses gets to sing, he immediately stops when the chorus begins again. As though he can't sing over it. This being isn't messing around. Our brains can barely wrap around the concept of Him, and he's pouring out the barest cup of what he can bring. Pharaoh was the barest imitation of God, and THIS is the real thing. This is the living God.
The beat of "thus sayth the Lord" repeated over and over by Moses and the chorus just reinforces how _powerful_ this God is. He decrees what happens. He calls down the Plagues. He calls down the locusts, the sores, the cows, the death that this will bring. He controls life itself, not Horus, not Set, not Ra, He darkens the sun. He kills the firstborn. He chooses His people. And Pharaoh will break, he will yield.
Or else.

Ramses thought he was god (morning & evening star), so naturally he thought Moses was trying to be god too, even if he made it obvious that he said the God of the Jews was with him.
I always find the dynamic of Rameses interesting, he truly did not think what he was doing was wrong. He also truly loved his brother.

God is very real and a three-fold God, the Holy Trinity(God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). After Creation was made by God, humans were originally innocent of sin, but after the first two, Adam and Eve, sinned against God, God the Father sent His Son, Jesus Christ(God the Son), to fulfill all His prophecies about the coming Messiah(who would be humankind's redeemer of sin) revealed in the Old Testament that had to be fulfilled on Jesus' first trip here and to die as the perfect sacrifice for humanity's sins for all time, which Jesus did by living a completely sinless life in prayer and service to the Father(before this, animals were sacrificed continually to get man used to the idea of the perfect sacrifice that Jesus would be, but these sacrifices were imperfect and couldn't cleanse away sin, yet God would forgive them their sins for their obedience to Him in making those sacrifices), and three days after His sacrifice, Jesus rose from the grave resurrected in His perfect, glorified body(original form in Heaven before He came to Earth) as a sign from the Father that His sacrifice had been accepted on our behalf. I really do want for you to be with me, my brethren, and God in Eternity, and implore you to make the correct choice and accept Christ when the times comes that you're called. If you do accept Christ, and follow His Will for your life, the world will persecute you at some point for standing for Him. It won't always be an easy life while your still in this world, but the rewards in Eternity and being with God will more than make it worth it in this life. My question is why you are going around the comment section asking practically much everyone the same question. Also, may as well answer your own question after asking mine, even though I know I will get the classic 'you will burn in hell' speech or something. While having been born to a catholic family, I am no longer catholic due to, you know, actually looking into the old testament and seeing how much of a monster god is. From what I remember of the times I went to church as a child and from what I remember of the new testament, Jesus was cool, though, he acts a lot more like a Buddhist then a Jewish person of the time so...

Even when I was a kid, I knew these songs were phenomenal. Fast-forward several years later, and now I have the musical background to fully appreciate just how amazing these songs are.

The way I see the story that no one is really right in this situation, the pharaoh is going to his gods which he was raised from birth to believe in and when they don’t he feels betrayed and blocks out the world, Moses who was forced into this position in cruel irony eventually leading to him dropping the sea to consume the Egyptians, and Yahweh for he slaughtered children in the dead of night and hardened the pharaohs heart.

I just noticed this, if you listen to the final line, when Moses sings, it sounds like everyone is behind him whereas when Rameses sings, only him can be heard.
It’s intentionally made as Rameses comes in slightly earlier than Moses.
Another interesting thing to note is that Moses parts of the song is ‘All I ever wanted’ with different lyrics.
This matches with a scene later where Moses enters his old home in similar shots to ‘All I ever wanted’.

Actually the Pharaoh had his heart hardened by God, so it really wasn't his fault.
Keep in mind Pharaoh had no choice in the matter. God himself says that he will harden Pharaoh's heart in order to ensure that he refuses to let the jews go.

What makes this song even better is that the VA for Moses and God (Val Kilmer) leads the chorus, so it sounds like Moses is joining the chorus in between the parts where he speaks to Rameses.
And, when Rameses says "How could you have come to hate me so? Is this what you wanted?", the chorus once again cuts in (led by Kilmer) with "I sent the swarm, I sent the hoard-" it sounds like God (speaking through Moses) is cursing Egypt, although to Rameses it sounds like Moses himself is cursing the land.

This song shows something that almost no form of media has ever dared to do, they always show God as the ultimate force of good. Not Prince of Egypt. This movie and the song, show the primordial side of God. Not the wise old mentor with a beard, but a terrifying and wrathful force of Nature. This is what God was before Christianity, before the old Testament. He was not loved, but respected and even feared.
Well, see this is the thing. God has always been on the side of his people. In the old Testement that was the Hebrews. His chosen people. He protects then and guides them. In the old testament he had to help his people carve their place into the world against nations of xenophobic people and prideful empires. In the new Testement, God finally allows the whole of humanity to become his chosen. As long as you believe. The biggest difference is that the Hebrews had God fighting their battles for them. He demonstrated his overwhelming power everyone around them and taught them fear and respect when then forgot it. But now, anyone can be a Christian. The door is open for now so God won't smite anyone because they can always have a change of heart. There have been lots of examples of that. But after this period, after the rapture, the world that remains will be full with only those who didn't listen. Those who are not his chosen. And the God of the old Testement will return to show the world that he does exist. And that he never left.
@@michaelmcdoesntexist8350 I don't know if you know this, especially because I was pretty shocked when I learned this information, but even back in the time of the old testament there were gentiles who converted to Judaism. They weren't necessarily of the tribe(s) of Israel, but just as well they were loved and cherished by the Lord. The first example that comes to mind is Melchizidek the High Priest and King of Salem. There were others, too.
It's just that the main goal wasn't to spread the word back then, like you said, it was to fulfill His promises to Abraham who so loved the Lord that he would sacrifice his own son (sound familiar?). His promises to Abraham and his descendants were fulfilled in the nation of Israel and in Jesus Christ, so then He could turn His attention to all the world.
I guess my point is, even way back then anyone (as far as I know) could convert to Judaism, which means by the reasoning you laid out He couldn't have smited them because they could come to worship Him. I think you are right about many things you said, but I don't think that possible coming to God is the reason He no longer directly smites people. I think it's that Christ was the final sacrifice which has paid for all sin until we reach judgment day after which if we were faithful servants of God (professing the name of Jesus Christ) or not will determine if judgment is brought down upon us. Kind of like how God made a promise in the rainbow not to ever commit a worldwide extinction event again.

Now we, obviously, can't just go around condemning and executing each other for every imperfection because none of us are perfect either. We don't even have the full picture of the proper order of the universe.
God does. And the moment mankind chose to essentially break creation for their own desires, he had no obligation to permit them to continue to exist. That's the level of authority, of power, he occupies. Omnipotent, omnipresent, eternal. There's numerous justifications for the plagues. Generations of oppression of His chosen people, implied betrayal of said people after Egypt made an agreement with Joseph, the culling performed on the Hebrews, Pharoah's stubbornness.
But He doesn't *need* any of those. He's been patient with mankind for millenia prior to this point, purely by choice, not any obligation.
This sequence doesn't shy away from that fact, the fact that only the deliberate choice of God to be restrained separates man from swift and terrible punishment.

If you have never heard this, the Salvation Plan of God, before, you have now, and will at some point make one or the other of two choices; Accept Christ as your Lord and Savior for the reasons I've already said when called on by the Holy Spirit to get saved, or reject Him. I really do want for you to be with me, my brethren, and God in Eternity, and implore you to make the correct choice and accept Christ when the times comes that you're called. If you do accept Christ, and follow His Will for your life, the world will persecute you at some point for standing for Him. It won't always be an easy life while your still in this world, but the rewards in Eternity and being with God will more than make it worth it in this life. When Jesus rose from the grave in His glorified form, He made Himself known to His remaining disciples and, before returning to Heaven, said He would go now to prepare a place for those who accept Him to stay in Heaven with Him, and when you die(if you get saved before that) you will be rewarded in accordance with how well you served to Him in this life. There is even more than this to come after, but we can talk about that in future messages if you want to reply.
Regarding Eternity with God though, its really as simple as what I've written in this message. If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them if you reply. However, I'll not argue the truth of Scripture with you, and If you reply denying the truth of what I've said or contradicting it, I'll ignore you.

I loved this movie. Looking back, it has an absolutely incredible soundtrack for a children's movie.
That's because "Prince of Egypt" isn't a children's movie, it's a family movie. There is a difference. A children's movie gives you less as you get older. A family movie, you notice and appreciate more and more the older you get.

@Questionable It is personal, which is why i keep asking. Because God so commands it. In case you don't know the truth of God, and His Salvation Plan, and/or haven't been saved, here it is so you may-
God is very real and a three-fold God, the Holy Trinity(God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). After Creation was made by God, humans were originally innocent of sin, but after the first two, Adam and Eve, sinned against God, with Adam bringing the curse of sin on the human race by doing so deliberately and allowing Eve to be tricked into sinning against God by Satan, God the Father sent His Son, Jesus Christ(God the Son), to fulfill all His prophecies about the coming Messiah(who would be humankind's redeemer of sin) revealed in the Old Testament that had to be fulfilled on Jesus' first trip here and to die as the perfect sacrifice for humanity's sins for all time, which Jesus did by living a completely sinless life in prayer and service to the Father(before this, animals were sacrificed continually to get man used to the idea of the perfect sacrifice that Jesus would be, but these sacrifices were imperfect and couldn't cleanse away sin, yet God would forgive them their sins for their obedience to Him in making those sacrifices because He considers obedience even better than a sacrifice), and three days after His sacrifice, Jesus rose from the grave resurrected in a glorified body(a body free of any human limitations of any kind) as a sign from the Father that His sacrifice had been accepted on our behalf. The sins(all but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit(God the Holy Spirit) ) of all humanity, both back then and today, were paid for Eternally with His sacrifice so that we could be both made alive spiritually(lost people are spiritually dead because their sins aren't forgiven yet, and are as sure for Hell or the Lake of Fire, one, as if they were already there) and reborn(spiritually) into the family of God through being baptized with the Holy Spirit by accepting Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, which we do by sincerely believing in Him to be the Son of God who died for our sins(with this His perfect sacrifice as payment for our sin debt to God on our behalf), that He was buried, and that He rose from the grave, with this coming after realizing you're a sinner in need of Eternal Salvation to avoid eternal damnation. You must believe all this in your heart and confess it by mouth. Doing so, we are born again into the family of God and will dwell with Him in Eternity. This is the only way you can go to Heaven, and all it takes to be there. Plain and simple.

When Moses talks about how he wishes things could be different, how he wishes God had chosen someone else instead, I felt so much PAIN for him. Like never before honestly, I watched this movie as a kid and I was just like “ok cool guy who parts the waters and turns a river into blood lol” but rewatching now years later it’s just so much more powerful and devastating for him, I feel for him so much like he HAD to do what God’s plan was even though it took everything from him. But he also was able to bring a new life to everyone including himself :’) such a masterpiece of this story retold, the animation makes it even better
MAN, what a film. I'm no songwriter, but I imagine it is incredibly difficult writing a song that just sounds like an actual battle taking place, but this nails it. And not just a battle, but a battle of the wills. The chorus in the background really brings that feeling of something eternal and massive, and just it incredible. This whole soundtrack is. Way ahead of its time.

Even though I was raised as a Christian my whole childhood I never cared much for it but this was one of my favourite movies as a kid and I have such vivid memory watching it the first time. I was in the hospital and every bed got a TV but nothing interesting was on cable, the lady next to me who had a cross around her neck had a dvd copy of The Prince Of Egypt and when she saw me she asked if I've seen it before and I said no so she gave it to me and I watched it everyday I was in the hospital without even knowing it was about christianity because I didn't know who Moses was and when he talked to God I thought that was normal cause at that age I just assumed everyone knew God
