Honestly, I don't really know much about little kids. I've heard PLENTY of little kids his age and younger who don't speak very clearly, and as they get older, their speech clears up. I was wondering for a while if Coop's enunciation was harder because he's deaf.

@@SillylittlegooberfrI nannied for a family with a little girl (4) who was deaf from birth and used hearing aids. Her little brother (2 yrs younger) didn’t speak a word until he was 3. He would point (or just look at something) and she would “translate” for him (signing and vocally), and she understood what he wanted without a sound so he didn’t have to speak. He also rarely cried- like almost never; if you didn’t check to see if he was awake he would just sit in his crib waiting for someone to come get him, never making a sound (I thought the baby monitor was broken the first few times I watched him, because the video showed him awake but he made no noise). I came in mainly to care for him and get him speaking when he was almost 2 because he hadn’t said a word yet and his parents were worried. They sent his sister to a camp for deaf kids for the summer (she was mainstreamed with an aide during the year from age 5 and up) and until she was no longer there to be his voice 24/7 he just apparently didn’t feel a need to speak. When he began to speak he sounded exactly like his sister even though he had no hearing issues and everyone else around him was hearing. As her speech improved, so did his.

It’s not cochlear implants that are the problem, it’s that language skills don’t develop properly without doing both sign language and implants.
