  • Hello everyone,
So the BMW R80ST had some issues with the front brake which I've repaired not too long in the past. For those that don't remember, or haven't seen the previous videos (available on my channel), this bike had new disc & pads, master cylinder rebuilt and the sludge cleared from the system and replaced with fresh fluid.
But now it's back. Hope you'll enjoy the video!
Thanks for watching and see you next time.

I would have never thought of that in a million years. I would have gone with the brake caliper replacement and pulled my hair off my head when the problem persisted. Nice catch there, Vlad! Awesome as always! I learned something new. Again.

Just found your channel, great videos. I had this exact same problem on my RS, thought it was hoses but no, could not figure it out, travelled with a wrench in my pocket to bleed the pressure when it started to drag. Finally, (after crashing in gravel because the front stopped turning) I figured out that little hole was blocked and drilled it like you did. Nice trouble-shooting!

Hey there. Thanks for your comment and apologies for the late reply.
Glad you’ve figured it out and thank you for sharing! 🙂

You shouldn't be too hard on yourself, it's not like it was super obvious, especially when it had passed the MOT with no issues - I assume. Problems on older bikes like this BMW can arise overnight. I am glad to see the channel slowly growing, keep up the good work, and I am sure your videos will be of great help to others who are wanting to get their hands dirty. Well done.

No, it wasn’t obvious, but maybe could have been prevented if I’d just replaced that master cylinder in the first place.
It did pass the Mot without issues, and although the brake lever was a bit stiffer than I would expect it to be, the brake was working fine even after a long test ride, so it didn’t cause any worry at the time 🙂

@@garage_tales I think you've done the right thing by not replacing it in the first place, most mechanics don't even try to repair things and chose to replace them as it's not coming out of their pocket.

@@akoslengyel4712 True. I suppose we do have the "fix rather than replace" mindset. If it where my bike I probably would have kept the repaired old one :D

You did very well, I’m not sure that is a mess up on your part at all. The older BMW M/Cyl assemblies are known to be troublesome, plenty of vids on utube about that, another good video and very informative, thanks.

Thanks for your comment Jon! I feel I should have just replaced it the first time, but hey…it’s fixed now, so it’s all good 🙂

Interesting, i had the same symptoms on a Norton Commando but the cause was the hydraulic hose collapsing internally. Externally there was no hint of a problem, but it was enough to cause the brake to drag badly. You may come across same problem one day.

I’m more than a little surprised that you didn’t have anything covering that nice paint! Brake fluid is famous for ruining paint.

Don’t worry. Didn’t get any on the fuel tank. But it might not be a bad idea to get one of those fancy covers :)
