Yeah well there's no way Bolger's Barnaby can seem QUITE as creepy as in the L&H version where the girl is like a little girl or something ... (I've never seen the Drew Barrymore version but I hear it's awful)
I love that he seems genuinely surprised that she said no. He sounds like he's thinking "all that dancing and singing was for nothing? I thought I had you for sure!" Very funny! :) I can't wait to watch this on Hallmark Movie Channel.
I'll never forget when I showed my friend Tara this movie several Christmases ago, I was at her house, and when we watched this number her mom came into the room, and right when Mary said no, Tara's mom was like, "You say no, after that great number?" ROFL
I recently saw Annette and Ann Jillian at the CVS store in Sherman Oaks, CA. Felt so sorry for Annette in a wheelchair and one the other side of the store I bumped into Ann Jillian - neither knew the other w in the same store. They both looked GREAT!
I loved this when I was a kid, omg the dancing the singing, I watched it so much the VHS is totally fried... Yeah I have the VHS lol. God I still know all the words to all the songs.
Between Barnaby and his killer moves (not to mention his ability to a) pussyfoot and b) lurk) and Grumio and his spectacular inventions and beautiful face, I will NEVER understand why Mary still insisted on marrying Tom when he LITERALLY sang to her face "you're just a toy". Like that talk is WAY more problematic than an old fella offering to literally give you a castle in Spain!!
Annette if you don't want him I'll take him! We'll dance every night and what's more he'll be the life of every party! I mean he is a dancer and comedian all rolled into one!
Ray had a song that a friend of mine presented to me a few years ago and the title was An Amy song that I never knew about until now. He was sincerely a great actor.
No because Tom is nice and he’s romantic. Barnaby is rotten and mean and not romantic at all. Capital gains and interest rates?!?! Oh, how romantic! Roll over, Romeo (being sarcastic)
What they probably didn't to put to put in this film is that after he married her he have done away with her in let's say "an unfortunate accident" because he only married her for the money and in the end she meant nothing to him.
I think it's basically just a very ruffled and fluffy tulle petticoat like you can get from Hell Bunny, but with a lot more layers, no rigid parts at all. (Weird coincidence, my name is Kate Dawson too :P)
My mother told me that this whole dance routine was a metaphor for the "moves" he would have in the bedroom. She said any time a movie or song presents a man trying to impress or woo a woman with dance moves it's always a metaphor - which ultimately made this scene a lot yuckier for me when i'd see this movie. Kinda sucked that innocent Disney magic out of it lol
can anyone tell me what kind of petticoat is under this dress as this was my fav movie as a child and now want a similar wedding dress? is is a flexible hoop or crinoline or just a great petticoat??? how does it bounce but still flounce and flex??? HELP PLEASE
Ok yes he is an evil greedy bastard. But he has some things going for him. He is persistent in what he wants, he has great dancing adn singing skills, a very nice outfit, and best of all an amazing hat.
You can tell Ray Bolger was having so much fun with this role
Ray bolger adored Judy Garland. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@@harperstacey9604I just realized remember him being back in Disney movie made wizard of oz Judy Garland 100th birthday party anniversary celebration party years documenty biography book of Life story about his family members
This man, this legend, was 57 when he played this role and did all that wonderful dancing. I am 32, and lucky if I don't fall while walking.
I'm 32 too and I literally am the clumsiest person ever it's like you really get off with your balance if I like crouch down I'm wabbling lmao
An icon!
Wow 57
He was 57 but he look like the average 46-47 year old man in the 1960s.
I think that performance deserved at least one date.
Yuck! Bolger was at least 35 years her superior.
@@vernots And Barnaby was even older.
Agnes Vernot 2:49 😂
Yes 😂 only one date
Yeah well there's no way Bolger's Barnaby can seem QUITE as creepy as in the L&H version where the girl is like a little girl or something ... (I've never seen the Drew Barrymore version but I hear it's awful)
To think Ray Bolger went from playing a scarecrow with no brain to a wise, crooked evil man is incredible!
Remember him wizard of Oz movie made 1939
This is my favorite version of Babes in Toyland. You can't beat the absolute classics...
Its a fine film.makes up for happiest millionaire and family band.
I agree with you
@@leonardhughes4521Fantasy was Disney’s wheelhouse
I love that he seems genuinely surprised that she said no. He sounds like he's thinking "all that dancing and singing was for nothing? I thought I had you for sure!" Very funny! :) I can't wait to watch this on Hallmark Movie Channel.
Hr could always use it to play a scarecrow.
I'll never forget when I showed my friend Tara this movie several Christmases ago, I was at her house, and when we watched this number her mom came into the room, and right when Mary said no, Tara's mom was like, "You say no, after that great number?" ROFL

This guy cracks me up in this song
all those years after Wizard of Oz and he danced as well as ever
Man, spending time with someone as entertaining and exaggerated as Ray Bolger, hell yeah, he'd be a shit ton of fun to be around! LOL
All that swag, confidence, and effort and she still says no.
Because he was (a) unromantic and (b) mean
Rest in Peace Annette-loved you in these old movies. They were all cheesy and wonderful! Miss this era and the stars from it!
Now I know why I loved Babes In Toyland when I was a girl. Ray Bolger as Barnaby!? How awesome is that!?
His portrayal is more in line with the traditional mellow drama villain of the early 20th Century. Think Snidley Whiplash as an example.
Classy Villians have dance numbers. Look at those stacked heals
i need clothes like this guy.
A thousand likes to you!
Lol
I know! That cape is so cool.
I loved this when I was a kid, omg the dancing the singing, I watched it so much the VHS is totally fried... Yeah I have the VHS lol. God I still know all the words to all the songs.
Ray Bolger and Annette Funiello are national treasure! Tim
Annette did an excellent job in Babes in Toyland
She knows how to say 'No.' ; )
i rew up on this movie,... the dancing and choreography in the entire movie is how i wish dianey still was.... it was amazng
This was such a good movie and I love Annette funnicello! She was my favorite actress then
R.I.P. Ray Bolger (1904-1987) (Barnaby) and Annette Funicello (1942-2013) (Mary Contrary).
I love you Annette Funicello rest with the angels up there.
ray still had some good moves left in him
He had good moves left in him the rest of his life. FYI, he was only 57 here.
MaskedMan66 Ironically he outlived most of the cast of The Wizard of Oz.
Because Barnaby was rotten and mean and about as romantic as a rash. Interest rates and capital gains, indeed! And Grumio was kind of dorky
Still floored that Mr. Toymaker told Grumio to "kys" after the automatic assembly line blew up 😭
my boy, B literally reminds me of birds of paradise during mating season.
Sandhill cranes! 😂
Annette if you don't want him I'll take him! We'll dance every night and what's more he'll be the life of every party! I mean he is a dancer and comedian all rolled into one!
Barnaby is so extra and I love it.
Ray had a song that a friend of mine presented to me a few years ago and the title was An Amy song that I never knew about until now. He was sincerely a great actor.
You gotta give him points for trying. It mut be hard for a man who wears high heels to get a girl.
Barnaby was delightfully full of himself!
Is it weird that I have this whole song memorized?
Trust me, you’re not alone.
I do too
RIP Annette and ray 2 Disney legends gone but not forgotten
That's the Scarecrow and Princess Ozma, y'all!
Incredible performance!
I WOULD love to wear dresses like that.
Fun Fact: This was Disney's first attempt at a live action musical movie
Wow. I never realized what they were singing and dancing about until now
this reminds me of Gaston singing me to belle in beauty and the beast musical ❤
Curious thing is that my grandmother named my mother after Annette Funicello, who plays Mary in this version of Babes in Toyland.
It looks like his heels are higher than hers are!
AGREED. I love that dress.
this guy would be me in this kind of a film.
LOL the best part is when she said no at the end, even after he went through the whole song and dance routine!
Knowing Ray plays Barnaby (I just watched The Wizard Of Oz) it's hard to hate him knowing he's also the Scarecrow
The Scarecrow playing a villain in a Disney movie
How did she ever keep a straight face through that?
RIP Annette.
I wish that this was showing on TCM instead of the 1930's version (not that there was anything wrong with it...it just didn't have RAY BOLGER).
True, Ray Bolger is f***ing amazing in this. But the 30s version has Laurel and Hardy. But not Ray Bolger.
Being with Barnaby would be a lot more fun than being with Tom XDD
But he also might murder you😬.....
No because Tom is nice and he’s romantic. Barnaby is rotten and mean and not romantic at all. Capital gains and interest rates?!?! Oh, how romantic! Roll over, Romeo (being sarcastic)
Excellent musical performance and videoclip.
It's the Scarecrow, disguised as Salvador Dalí...
some of that dancing towards the end reminded me of his scarecrow character dancing in the Wizard of Oz.
Well, Barnaby IS played by the same actor as the scarecrow. Ray Bolger. ;]
They alreadt said that.
He doesn't get it that no means no. To him, it means keep going
He's rather like the Comedian from Watchmen in that regard....
Thankfully Barnaby doesn't get too Agressive with Mary here...
What they probably didn't to put to put in this film is that after he married her he have done away with her in let's say "an unfortunate accident" because he only married her for the money and in the end she meant nothing to him.
This scene reminds me of "Damn Yankees" in the "What Ever Lola Wants" by Gwen Verdon. This got to be the male version.
Classic!
I used to obsess over this scene as a child, now I see it's pretty damn creepy... LOVE this film though!
and when it's time to do the dishes, where's Ray Bolger? I'll tell you where, Ray Bolger's looking out for Ray Bolger!!!!"
He's at his daughter Shirley's house.
Ray looks like a dashing debanar attractive vampire 🦇🦇🧛🧛
2:33 That face 😂😂
is it me or is this guy having way to much fun with his cape
It's just you.
5:07 The way she said "no"...
😂😂😂😂
I love how they turned the ballad from the operetta into a villain song 😂
I found and listened to the original. I like this version better.
I think it's basically just a very ruffled and fluffy tulle petticoat like you can get from Hell Bunny, but with a lot more layers, no rigid parts at all.
(Weird coincidence, my name is Kate Dawson too :P)
Mary contrary is beautiful
Fun fact this Barnaby Jones is played by Roy Bulger who most might know him better as the Scarecrow in the wizard of oz with Judy Garland
"No."
LOL! I never noticed before - you're right!
If only I had the authority to grant this request, I would do so at once.
I feel kinda bad for this guy now. Making a fool of himself with that one sided performance went nowhere with her.
Yeah, completely embarrassed himself
@k8eereads I never noticed that - you're RIGHT!!
I must say he is trying hard. Nice actually being able to see teh scene.
All of Mary's outfits reminds me of belle's outfits in beauty and the beast
Can I just say... creeper much? Say NO girl. Well, he can dance something fierce.
Doesn’t Ray remind you of Walt with that mustache? 😂
Ahh.my future husband.lol
My mother told me that this whole dance routine was a metaphor for the "moves" he would have in the bedroom. DXCProductions I'm pretty sure your Mom made that up
Peppermint Snowdrift
Well, if it is, he's got some weird as heck moves. It would also further explain why she said no...
It also makes the fountain part seem a lot weirder hahaha
Oops, had to add the word "weird" to that sentence...heh, forgot it first time typing
That's pretty gross.
Mary reminds me of belle and Barnaby reminds me of Gaston
Actually, Belle is reminiscent of Mary and Gaston is reminiscent of Barnaby. This movie came first
Life tip: Dont fuck with a guy in a black Cape who can pop a Charleston out of literally nowhere
thanks!! wierd coincidence my brother initials are BJ and everyone calls me KT lol
Ray bolger was great in this actually if he wasn't in it I doubt I would have watched it.
Love this Babies Toy Land
Can we all wear dresses like that? PLEASE? :)
I think Barnaby gets a bad rap. He was just misunderstood soul. He was offering her a great deal. One definitely worth consideration.

Dude, your not a bird, what are you doing trying to impress this woman?!
4:30 - sexiest man voice you will ever hear ladies.
can anyone tell me what kind of petticoat is under this dress as this was my fav movie as a child and now want a similar wedding dress? is is a flexible hoop or crinoline or just a great petticoat??? how does it bounce but still flounce and flex??? HELP PLEASE
part 3:36 she must have been thinking OK I'LL MERRY U JUST STOP DANCING I CAN'T TAKE IT ANY MORE
I NEVER SAW THIS VERSION UNTIL 2DA JUST AS GOOD AS LAUREL AND HARDY....THAT DAMN BARNABY AND HIS ABUSIVE "CRUELTY" LOL!!
Ok yes he is an evil greedy bastard. But he has some things going for him. He is persistent in what he wants, he has great dancing adn singing skills, a very nice outfit, and best of all an amazing hat.
The cats got some sweet move though
Ray is better here than in Wizard Of Oz...of course that is just complacent to the director...
Sammygrewe I agree
bet ya did not no he was in wizard of oz
2:23 is when he goes off
Nice and creepy. Hey Bo or Boo if you prefer, that's the situation.
Well yes that too.
Lol.at 4:50 she smiled at him
no she didnt
3:55
Mary looks like belle from beauty and the beast
