    Pick leaving the Straits was such a shame musically. Their sound changed after that, he was such a fast and crisp drummer, he makes those first albums for me.

    I strongly recommend John Illsley's recently published book My life in Dire Straits. Soo interesting and beautifully written with Mark Knopfler's foreword. Some nice words about Pick as well

    I must get John's book. I saw Dire Straits in 1992 in Wellington, New Zealand. Great gig. I was 19. Memories indeed. Moved to the UK in 2000.

    Hands down, Pick Withers’ contribution to Dire Straits’ album, Making Movies, is the single best contribution to an album in the rock era. Any other drummer in the studio, and that album would not have been nearly as good or nearly as successful.
    He was the best musician in that band. There, i said it…

    I have listened to a few Pick Withers interviews.....seems like a bit of an egotist,the drums are there to drive the band,its called lead guitar for a reason.
    Knopfler wrote the songs which in turn gives him the power to dictate,Pick couldn't handle that,so he left.
    These musicians are all the same,all wanting the glory and their egos stroking rather than getting on with the job

    • @tu1949
      @tu1949 Před 2 lety +2

      Well that's one version! How many other players left?..... and were THEY, all wrong too? I'm a big Straits and MK fan but his treatment of others (THEN, that's important) especially his own brother.....was appalling!

    • @simoncbr900rr
      @simoncbr900rr Před 2 lety +2

      @@tu1949 I don’t dispute Knopfler is a tool,but where the music was concerned he wrote it so he has the power the tell others what he wants from them musically and be forthrite when he thinks it’s not good enough (his brother mainly)
      Withers seems to be a bit of an egotist to me but that’s up to him,it only cost him about 30 million quid😂😂😂

    • @tu1949
      @tu1949 Před 2 lety

      @@simoncbr900rr crossed purposes there, I think. In those days, as his brother said at the time..."I thought we were supposed to be a democracy but I was obviously wrong". The songs were MKs, fine....but the founding members DK and JI were there right from the start and David was entitled to his opinion and not be told to "eff off" each time he made a comment!
      Re' Pick Withers....he tells of an incident where he was interviewed for a prominent magazine and whilst reading it....it was literally snatched from his hands, by MK...who said, "I'm in that next month".
      As previous, I've been a fan of both the Straits AND MK since the late 70s....for the songs and the music...which is Mark's.....I'm aware of that. I was simply making an observation following some of the comments about Pick.
