Scaled-down Marineland reopens in Ontario without rides and animals

  • Marineland, a popular attraction in Niagara Falls, has reopened its doors after a troubled off-season. The park, which faced allegations of animal cruelty and the death of beluga whales, has scaled back its operations, closing some rides and animal exhibits as part of a redevelopment plan.
The attraction was found guilty in March under Ontario’s animal welfare legislation for failing to comply with an order related to the care of three young black bears.
"I think they are on their last legs, but there should be an end to this," Michèle Hamers from World Animal Protection Canada said.
    Global's Sean O'Shea reports.

So I took a visit and it's not bad. You still get to see belugas and dolphins swimming but no more shows and the bears 🐻 mercifully are gone though no idea where they moved them. I went there as a kid in the early 2000s and it was exactly the same, we always wondered why there was no shade for the deer. Just a barren desert of an enclosure. 60 years the place has been open and I doubt one thing was ever done to improve the welfare of the animals in that whole span.

I live nearby and love to visit and support the place as it's a great family outing and admission tickets were reasonable. I've never been to SeaWorld so this was Canada's version though there is a marine park in Vancouver BC as well. I remember the catchy Marine Land jingle from the 90s and visiting it in 90s to 2000s to today it really hasn't changed much. The dolphin 🐬 shows were entertaining and you can see orcas and belugas but I often wonder if they're happy living in captivity and if we as patrons buying tickets is part of the problem. The saddest thing I've seen was the bears 🐻 all huddled in the shade at the bottom of a pool staring up at us like they were asking for help. I'm not sure if it's because they were suffering heat stroke in the sun so that's why they're in the pool in the shade but it doesn't seem natural for bears to be in a pool all day and it seems overcrowded. Honestly I'm not sure what's the right thing to do but perhaps a good example is to look at SeaWorld where they've changed their program more towards education. I haven't been to SeaWorld so don't really know but there has to be a way to balance a fun educational aquatic center with humane treatment of animals.

@@karmabutterfly7985 That's not even close to being accurate. The evidence shows that by any reasonable standard the project was a failure. Keiko (the correct spelling) remained reliant on human contact and feeding. Pods, schools, prides, flocks and packs are incredibly important in social species for survival. And Keiko never truly rehabilitated and returned to nature. Keiko died prematurely. It might have given you your cinematic moment. You enjoyed your Free Willy experience. Keiko was never aware that their suffering and early death gave you that satisfaction. In your own view the limited time in open waters rather than a tank is better. But it was not a successful project. Not by any standards. Maybe something can be learned and future attempts can be more successful. But right now if anyone really does their research they will see how difficult this is. They will see that there is limited public support for public dollars needed to go into these projects. They will see very limited support from private donors. There can be a preserve or sanctuary created for the remaining whales in captivity. It would be incredibly costly to construct and staff such facilities. Realistically those whales currently in captivity will live out the remainder of their lives in captivity. Say what you will about breeding more in captivity and capturing and bringing more into these facilities.

This is a great place but the way animals are treated is questionable. I remember seeing the 🐻 all crowded in the swimming pool below hiding in the shade thinking they look so sad and what they must be thinking. Are they hungry or too hot so that's why they're hiding in the shaded corner and is it normal for bears to always be in a pool of water? It seems they're overcrowded as well and need alot more space. What they should do is make it a theme park with rides and some animals and whales treated properly. Maybe rotate the animals to larger space to roam in a nature park during the off season. The 🐻 were especially sad.

Why freeing Willy was the wrong thing to do

Keiko, star of Free Willy, in playful mood
Willy was never really free. The killer whale star of the Hollywood movie Free Willy had to be cared for by humans even after he was released and he never successfully integrated with his wild kin. Researchers now say attempts to return him to the wild were misguided.
“We believe the best option for [Willy] was the open pen he had in Norway, with care from his trainers,” says Malene Simon of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, who participated in efforts to reintegrate the cetacean in the wild and is lead author of the study. “He could swim as much as he wanted to, had plenty of frozen herring - which he was very fond of - and the people that he was attached to kept him active.”
The killer whale, whose real name was Keiko, died in December 2003, at about 26 years old. Despite efforts to integrate him with wild killer whales in Iceland towards the end of his life, he proved unable to interact with them or find food.
“While we as humans might find it appealing to free a long-term captive animal,” the researchers say in the paper, “the survival and well-being of the animal may be severely impacted in doing so.” The only cetaceans that have successfully been returned to the wild have been young and only kept in captivity for short periods.
The team’s comments contradict those made by members of the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation, who declared in 2003 that his case had challenged the perception that whales cannot be returned to the wild. But Simon’s account of Keiko’s last few years shows just how unsuccessful his release was.
