  • Manipur followed Meitei religion before the advent of Hinduism in the state. Pamheiba Charaiongba played a major role in ensuring the state embraced Hinduism, even though it was mostly by force rather than willingness of his subjects. Tina Das tells you more on ThePrint #NorthEastParNazar

Just like Roman script has enriched our outlook, Bengali language and script was one of the most highly regarded in that era. It only enriched Manipuri literature, arts and hence culture. @chumijokeishing2731 Před rokem +4

I have read almost all the comments here and I find many misunderstandings going on, especially by Hindus from mainland India.
I am a native of Manipur State from the hills, and I would like to clarify.
    1. Before British arrival, the tribal people of Manipur state were not Hindu. Though they were aware of the existence of god and evil spirits, they did not worship any of them. Tribal people did not pray nor bow to any pebbles, stones, trees, or plants; nor do they build temples for worship. So, first things first, understand that the tribal people were not HINDU.
    2. There was no forced conversion to Christianity. One man named William Pettigrew came with a bible, which is a book, and taught about the good news of Christ; that's how Christianity disseminated. I don't know how 1 white man with a book can force thousands of tribal people who hunt heads to conversion. It's silly to even think about forced conversion; the question of forced conversion should not even arise. People who think that there is forced conversion have been wrong Informed or just sharing their opinions without knowledge of the subject at hand.
FYI: Hinduism was already firmly established in kangleipak( land of Meities) when the Christian missionary arrived here. They probably must have tried to convert the Hindus by preaching, but seems like the meitei were not interested in their message---christ's message.
    4. Another misconception about Manipur State: the present state boundary is a creation of the Indian government. So, When you used the word Manipuri before statehood, know that only 9% of the present state boundary was known and identified as Manipuri. Other 91% of the state territory came under the nomenclature "Manipur" only after statehood under the Indian union. So, if you are talking about Manipur's past before statehood, the word Manipuri exclusively points and applies to the meitie community only.
    5. Regarding tribal people losing their identity, religion, and culture, I would like to explain.
Identity: missionaries came to tribal land and returned home. They did not settle. So, our identity and purity are protected and preserved. Whereas, this is not the case with Meitei who converted to Hinduism. They are today facing identity and land crises. Which religion does more damage? Hinduism without a doubt!
Culture: our tribal attires are 100% preserved under Christianity. It is not harmed or polluted or mixed in any way. Our surnames are all 100% original. Moreover, only a few tribal males and females have western names, so this does not endanger our culture.
Christianity does not harm the tribal-ness of tribal people in any way; it rather protected and preserved it.
We, the present generation, are extremely jubilant about the decisions of our forefathers to accept Christianity. If it wasn't for Christianity, we will still be half-naked; we will wear no shoes; we will still be living in huts; we will illiterate; we will not be brushing our teeth.
Again, We are very glad that we gave up backness and superstitions. All thanks to Christian missionaries and their effort for spreading light in the land of darkness.

Maybe as Manipuris would begin reclaiming their Kangleipak's glory and bring Sanamahism back to the centre of the state's culture, the Hindu Meiteis of today may feel bad, or heartbroken. But if you can syncretize and harmonize both aspects of native Sanamahism and Hinduism (and even some Christianity if it is possible), Manipur will shine brighter than all 🇮🇳💖

@@joeyluwang2448 Oh yes, I didn't mean that Meiteis should not bring sanamahism back. But practically speaking, many Manipuris, even if they shift to Sanamahism, they may still want to practice some of their Hindu origin beliefs, like for example the Manipuri Raas Leela Dance, which is a classical dance of India even, and very popular among Meiteis despite religion. Same goes for marriage style, I think some level of Hindu influence exists on all Manipuri marriages like their clothes and all.
So, my only hope is that even when Sanamahism comes back and even if it becomes majority in the state, the rich legacy of Manipuri dance for example, is not removed or deleted from Manipur's society just because it has Hindu origin. I hope Sanamahism can syncretize some of the Hindu cultures and traditions into it so Manipuris don't, have to leave such a beautiful culture of dance and music behind, because it is a symbol that even when Hinduism was forced on Manipur, Manipuris were so humble and golden hearted that they created a unique culture for themselves out of it instead of outright rejecting it, it's a symbol of their kindness and secularity and I hope Sanamhism revival lets that be maintained. God bless.

      @samkakc Před 2 lety +2

This is true. I back this answer. More than a hundred Brahmins and KShetris came to Manipur who was given Meitei Consorts by meitei Kings and they became people today bearing surnames of Sharma, Sinha, Singh etc. All of them were given different family names and were assimilated into one of the major seven clans. They became part of the Meitei society only after giving a specific duty in the administration of the Kingdom. Meitei society was a very well laid out, scientific and sophisticated society. Each family's record was written down with the names of the Hindu immigrants, the name of his consort, their family's duty in the Kingdom, the qualities and attributes of the man who came etc were all recorded in their family's Sagei Puya establishing the family tree from then on. This happened before King Kiyamba but the most significant influx happened since King Kiyamba at around 1456 AD and became a mainstream culture only after the Moron King Garibniwaz who executed people who didn't want to convert to Hinduism.

Hinduism was never forced on anyone…Meiteis, Bodos, and other north eastern tribes adopted Hinduism during the reign of Hindu kings like Pamheiba(Garib Nawaz) but still follow their ancient religions such as Sanamahism and Bathouism because Hinduism is not only similar to these religions but is also inclusive and allows for the worship of many deities, unlike Abrahamic religions which calls idol worshippers and polytheists as “heathens” or “Kafirs”.
Hinduism never erased their culture but accepted it, while Abrahamism will reject the practises of their ancestors as heathenry and ignorance

Singh, Sharma, Sinha etc were all added only after the mixing of blood happened with our original meitei ancestors and those Brahmins and Kshetris coming from Hinduism backgrounds mainly from West Bengal, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. We look way different than regular Indians because we mostly have SE Asian blood. For example majority of people of Kshetrimayum, Okram, Maibam, Ningthoujam, all the RKs today and all the Bamons etc (the list is quite big) have blood ties with people from India starting back from the 14/15th century. We are mostly a mix of two races at least but still most dominant of SE Asian geneal ancestry. In 99 per cent of the cases, this mixing of ethnicity happened with only one ancestor from the Indian side (the father side) and one meitei chanu (the mother side) that's it. So over generations to generations, the Indian features waned off and more Asian features remained dominant. That's why our looks are far from regular Indians and skew towards strong Asian features while at the same time some of us still show an Indian feature here and there. This is an intercultural sign of exchange happening between the two.

The worship of Vishnu was strated in Manipur in the 15th century during the reign of King Kyamba (1467-1508). According to tradition, the idol of the Vishnu sitting on a Caruda was presented by Tsawba Khekhomba, the Shan king of Pong in 1474 A.D.; even, now there is a Vishnu temple at Bishenpur. But the kings of Manipur were not converted to Hinduism till the reign of Charairongba (1697-1709), the presence of Hindu mode of worship in Manipur could be easily implied due to the migration of Brahmins in this kingdom.
