- If you want to hit better, more solid golf shots that fly further through the air working on the trail arm can help this happen.
One of the big differences between the best in the world and the handicap golfer is how they use and move their trial arms through the downswing, this video by Chris Ryan explains just how this trail arm move will change your game for the better

What else do you think is a big difference between a tour player and an amateur?
All the pro's hips (or centre pelvis) move away from the ball, pretty much all amateurs move towards it. Guilty as charged....
Pros practice, practice, practice while ams turn up once a week, don’t practice first then self criticise without realising the significance of muscle memory. The other thing I think is attitude towards yourself, I once read that after a bad shot, which we all have, you should speak to yourself as you would to your best mate... not your worst enemy as some do; state of mind is a huge factor in this wonderful game!
The absolute rock solid takeaway. No sway or lifting. Just pure turn and winding up to set the club. The Golf Online slow mo of Tiger is a thing of beauty and is so far away from my swing it makes me want to give up (but i wont!). Great video as always Chris.
Money..
Very true!
Another great lesson Chris. This ties in really nicely to your lesson “How to hit down on the ball”. That drill almost forces the trail hand into the position you show here. You have the clearest explanations with follow up drills out there.
Perfect drill once again, after I’ve just finished my lessons with my local pro here in Brisbane Qld. This is exactly what we’ve been working on. Cheers Chris.
Really like the way you break it down and explain the drill Chris. I think you are one of the better coaches out there with your communication of the idea spot on..
Been playing golf for 10 years and this video has completely changed my swing for the better. Can finally understand the mechanics of the trail elbow and wrist lag. Awesome stuff ChrisRyan!!!
If only I had seen this lesson 20 years ago. Probably the most important and well described instruction video I have ever seen. Brilliant !
I’ve only taken a few lessons in my lifetime (60 now) and been around a few decent players and it’s funny no one has ever stressed how important that move is in the downswing. It’s almost like they don’t want you to know and enjoy watching you struggle and continue to pay for more lessons and have more physical pain from doing it wrong. Sad!
Another great one, thank you. Side benefit of this is that it is really helping me to feel the proper shoulder-turn through impact.
This arm position tip has literally changed my game. I had been having a problem coming across and even shanking when coming across too much. This has not only eliminated that, but also helped get rid of the fat shots as well. Thank you Chris.
Great to hear Keith
Your ability to explain and demonstrate is second to none Chris, I have played for forty six years mainly at single handicap level and you are without doubt amongst the very best!. Many thanks!
Thank you Chris. This lesson REALLY helped me better understand the impact position I need to be in and have struggled to achieve for many years. Thank you.
Great one and perfect timing, had a meltdown last weekend--this one helped me refocus on the range this week. The throwing drill is so simple and effective (especially for a former shortstop!).
This is the very best of many great lessons that I learnt from you and implemented . Can't thank you enough for how much I have gained watching your videos . You are so so good Cris !
Great stuff👍 been pulling everything with shut face! This fixed it trail arm is key!
Wow! Absolute excellence Chris! I’ve tried the skimming stone before, but the finish is never held! Holding the trail arm position and then rechecking it at impact is so informative! Thanks Chris!
Wow!! I've doing this drill for around three days. Before that my misses were to the right (fades), this drill has almost eliminated these misses. But what is immensely pleasing, is that my contact has gotten so much better and consistent and i'm hitting it longer, straighter and further. I'm amazed at its effectiveness.
On a real me too.
You are definitively the best golf teacher. Very comprehensive tips and easy to replicate on range. Please keep being the same uncovering golf secrets other professors hide for money, simply for students such as me. Cheers 👍👍
@ChrisRyanGolf I have watched multiple of your videos. You really have a gift of not just teaching but the ability to simply a tour style golf swing in sections. This is such helpful information. I can’t wait to try these trail arm training drills. Thank You!
Best tipi ever seen. Thanks. This works very well. No one talks about this move .
Thanks Chris , I always wondered why my club face was closed through impact, I think this drill will help me considerably
What a brilliant explanation and drill. I had a general idea of what to do with my right arm but have never had it so clearly explained and demonstrated.
This is a superb video and exactly what I needed. I have a hard time in my downswing getting that trail arm in front of my body with the elbow leading as I tend to cast the club. I’ll be working this drill extensively. Thanks Chris!
Chris, excellent as ever. I have sometimes used a tennis ball in the ball to ground drill. Thanks.
I just want to state that I found this video very helpful. I feel like I've not seen many videos on what the trail arm should be doing particularly in the down swing. I've been taking lessons, and that's one facet we haven't covered yet, but it has helped me tremendously.
I really enjoyed this video - please tell us you have a video coming on the lead arm with as much detailed information as this video :)
Beginner golfer. Had issues with topping and inconsistent striking. Took this lesson to the range this morning (along with another tip from another video on modifying my grip) and the change was immediately noticeable. Much more consistent in striking the ball.
As you stated, this is a very hard exercise but immensely impactful. I love your channel and your (heavy) technical approach to teaching - thanks!
Chris! I found this video in your library after my continuing research on how the arms control the club, not the hands! I am also archiving this video with your other! I feel that this change is going to really help my game. Thanks for your Help!
I have probably watched this video before, as I have many of yours, but watching it this evening reinforce some thing I became aware of on the driving range this morning while hitting irons. Turning my elbow under allowed me to hit clean straight shots. Thank you
This drill really helped me, cheers Chris!! Shot my best round in a while today using this technique as my pre-shot routine 👍🏼
Great to hear chris
Thank you so much for the great drill Chris!! I can’t wait to try it when we’re back on the course 👍🏻
Thank you so much Chris, went to the driving range today and applying this technique completely changed my striking and ball contact!!
Cheers
Many thanks for the video. I see many other commenters focus on the drill. I really appreciated your slow motion and detailed visual of the position of the trail arm at impact. It allowed me to see and then actually feel the proper position. Even without the drill, I was able to replicate the feel on the course. Thanks again.
This is the best golf lesson, it cures so many faults. Many thanks Chris
This one golf tip has funneled my various setup and motions into a more constant and improved shot result. Thank you.
Great training exercise. I am working on this during the winter. It does feel like I am generating more club head speed at impact. 👍 Keep the info coming and a happy new year to you.
Excellent Chris this movement changed my swing from difficult to easy just like that. My back didn't hurt either. I just saw this video yesterday before my round of golf and I noticed big improvement.
You've just fixed my swing. I've been tearing my hair out trying to understand what's gone wrong, this has just resolved it. Thanks Chris!
Hi Chris, thank you for this video.
It's the first time I have a clear video and comments on the trail arm position and usage.
I discover your channel just yesterday and your comments are concise ans very clear.
Great and thank you.
Jack
This has changed my game so much already! Only been playing for a little over a year but it’s a great technique to learn early
Great drill and explanation. Finally understand how to get to that impact position. Tried it and noticed much better ball contact. Will continue with drills to get muscle memory so it becomes automatic. Big thumbs up!
You never stop learning - this is a simple and ingenious method to help build your swing drill - I’ve been doing it for hours in the garden- can’t wait to get on the range - thanks 😊
I just wanted to say, I have been struggling with some pretty tough rounds lately...thank you for the Trail Arm Move. I went out this morning after doing the drills I had a pretty good feeling for it right away. I really played some of the best golf ever, the ball was going to the target. The drills very simply reinforced some of the good stuff I was already doing. Keep the videos coming.
Great to hear Dante and glad the vidoe was helpful
Probably best explanation and exercise I’ve ever seen on this subject.
I totally agree ~~ 👍👌
I found this video lesson to be truly mind blowing .. I have had terrible long-standing problems with my irons and no sensation of compression.
Hitting behind and thinned shots have been all too common and making me feel like giving up the game. I have NEVER felt my hands in the checkpoint trail elbow position you have shown. Your description and exercises have helped me understand a path towards solid strikes.
Many thanks.
Chris, I really appreciate this lesson The drill makes a lot of sense and was easy to follow. I will now take this to the course, once I have mastered it.
Great video Chris. Really helped to play your own game and pick the right shots. As I'm pretty much starting out. This will help me a lot
I love this. Very visual for me. I plan on practicing this and applying it to my swing. This is something I really need to improve on.
Thank you! Found that this is particularly useful for the Bump And Run shot with the Pitching wedge too. Lead arm nearer rib cage, and hold the club at the proper distance and length and chip away without too much arm movements.
This is great Chris 👍 will be working on this asap! Thank you!
This was it! This was the lesson that had the biggest impact on me so far...I went to the range to practice this first, and saw immediate results. I then applied it to a round yesterday, at a course I play often.... Best round to date, by 4 strokes! Cheers, Chris!
Well done Brian!
Let me guess.. 2 years later and stilllll can’t break par?! Now back to searching through CZcams videos for that “ key”?! Lol
@@JBALLER02geez dude why so negative? (Don’t care about just telling the truth)
An excellent tutorial as always
Thank you Tried it On The course today with a good result Even did a Hio 😁😁
Thank you ! This is exactly what I was looking for 😀
Thanks Chris this is what I have been thinking about .its one off my problems that need sorting out👍👍
Another awesome lesson on a key point that I need to work on.
You’ve made a big difference to my game and reduced my HC significantly!
Many thanks Chris
Thanks and great to hear 👍
I have watched many CZcams videos on the swing and 90% are pure junk. This video was however excellent and very correct. You have perfectly outlined the trail arm path to and through the ball. The “throw” takes place from the elbow and as you point out NOT from the wrist ( throw away ). Thanks for producing a fine video. Good production quality as well.
Cheers F : Authorized Instructor , The Golfing Machine.
Gracias Chris por esta lección. Me fue muy útil . Logré mejorar la dirección de la pelota que siempre salía hacia la izquierda.
This is probably the best video I've even seen for consistent impact. Well done !
This is the best thing to have ever happened to my swing. Hitting it so much easier and crisper now. Thank you Chris!
Thanks, Chiris.
I can't understand why my previous golf teachers never taught me this drill. I've always struggled with my ball's short distance and high altitude. My previous golf teachers didn't teach golf swing principles but just asked me to follow their swing. You seem like really passionate about studying golf swing mechanisms and very good at delivering it to recreational golfers.
The best video I have come across on keeping elbows connected throughout the swing.
Thanks, this is awesome! This should be the first lesson every new golfer gets.
Thanks so much Chris!! I used this at the range this weekend and hit the best shots I have in a long time. My PGA pro is try to help me stop “casting” to the left and start swinging to the right with the same impact position you are teaching. IT IS VERY TEDIOUS AND FRUSTRATING to make the changes. Your drills are a big help. Thanks again
Great to hear you had some success Andrew 👍
Wow. OMG. What a difference this made on the practice range. I had commented to a guy next to me on the range about how solid his shots sounded. He said yeah, had been watching your videos. I’m telling ya it pays to chat up people on the range. Thanks much!
I learned a valuable golf lesson today as i've never been so conscious with my trail hand movement. Thank you Coach Chris for the great tip! Keep inspiring!
Thanks Andrew and glad it helped
very important lesson, thx Chris, I was struggling with touching the ground, this tip helped a lot
Glad to hear it’s helped 👍
The best video on trail arm drill ever! Especially that 30-40 yard break down step. So crucial on getting that right feel. Thanks a million!
Thanks Sean appreciate that, not easy to work on but I believe it can help so many 👍
@@ChrisRyanGolf not easy to work on, which is why golfers don’t do it correctly. Terrific demonstration of what your trying to accomplish.
excellent video, this is the one video that has transformed my recent play. gone form very erratic to very consistent. still working on it but so far so good..
Hey Kenny are you still applying this move? How has it been working?
👍👍. I find your videos easy to understand because they're not bogged down with technical jagon. Keep them coming. Cheers.
This video might have single handedly saved my golf swing! This drill is amazing and fixes my lazy swing when I go back to bad habits!
Great drill. I have a tendency to roll the forearms thus pulling the shot left with a draw. I hope this drill will help me stop rolling the arms.
What a pleasure to watch and learn - thanks!
Right elbow discussion was masterfully done and a game changer for me personally. Great job.
Started doing the slow swing drill a month ago and I’m hitting the ball more solid than ever. Scores went way down. Game changer. Thank you!!!
Amazing put together and explained Chris! 😎⛳️
My trail arm is the primary problem of my golf swing and have been trying to fix/improve for many, MANY months. I am very excited to give this a go the next time I can get out to the range. Thank you very much Chris!
Thanks David
great lesson, thankyou. i've recently got back to golf after a few years out and i have quickly realized what i'm going completely wrong. shoulder positions and trail arm position being the BIG 3 errors. i never realized just how far off i was. i got work to do, adding this drill to the list lol
Wow, what a game changer! Thank you for making it so easy to understand.
I stubbled across this video at the weekend looking for videos to improve ball striking I practiced the drills at home after seeing it then yesterday I took it to the range to put into sticking actual balls I will admit to smothering a few shots at the beginning but once I got used to the different right hand position omg longer straighter and a way more penetrating flight was for the first time able to hit my 3 iron with confidence
This is the best video I've ever seen to help ball striking thank you for posting but more importantly explaining in a way everyone can understand
Great drill Chris, I have been looking for a drill to get this feeling & I think this will work with some practice on the range.
Brilliant video Chris. I tried it on the course( not exactly like your instructions) it felt so different and the swing became easy. I am going to work on it in the range
Hi Chris, Thanks for that great tip. Will definitely practice that at the range today.
Thank you! Turing up the trail arm to put the elbow in the right position is a tip you gave about two years ago? It cured my flying elbow! Nice to see it again
Thanks Harry great to hear
Love the 4 stage drill Chris. Saw this for the first time with Me&MyGolf that you were a guest on. The trail arm rotation to is bang on what Hogan taught. Will take this to the range and report back.
Thanks Chris, the trail arm/elbow is exactly what I had stumbled upon as an area that was giving great improvement. Your video explains and clarifies exactly what I wish to work on. Cheers
Thanks Nat hope it helps
Brilliant explanation and demonstration of arm position and contact position. I note also that do this promotes the hip turn and weight transfer. So clearly explained. Thank you.
Wow! This does look like a challenge. I will give it a go 🤞 thank you Chris 🇿🇦
Always on the money!! Thank you for another awesome lesson Chris!
Wow! This video was a huge help! Hitting so many more GIR! Remarkable video! Thank you so much!
I like this video. I knew I needed to have my elbow in this position, but never how to actually get there. the swing is fast, so this feeling of throwing the ball really helped
This has been the best advice so far. Thank you
Incredible video lesson Chris! I will work on that the next time I am out.
Another wonderful drill - thank you so much for the great teaching.
Thanks Steve appreciate it
Thank you Chris! I'm a new CZcams to your channel. Thanks for putting this up I'm going to give this a whirl.
Thank you for this!
Thanks Cris, I learned another great skill from you.
Great! Very informative to play golf!!
This was a great tip!! Thank you!
Nice. Good drill.
My way of implementing this is more based upon the concept of visualizing my right palm simulating the club face and covering the ball and driving it down and forward. This gets and keeps my hands ahead while also keeping them in front of my body.
Great - as ever! Love the ball to ground drill.
Great video! Such a good drill for consistency
Thank you for producing high-quality video and explaining the golf instruction so well God bless you
