Hi Bjorn, regarding the BMW electrical machine tech...
BMW shifted away from the permanent magnet synchronous motors in the last generation of EVs.
Like many other brands will in near future.
The main reason is uncertainty regarding the availability of rare earth materials.
Now they use externally excited synchronous motor. Like Renault does on Zoe and other cars.
This type of motors has some disadvantages, because you have to spend some energy to induce the magnetic field in the rotor.
And the power to do that can be quite high, up to 10kW at full torque request.
But on the other hand it allows you to adjust the rotor field according to the needs, which is advantageous especially at higher motor speeds where you would need to use "field weakening" in the PMSM motor.
Another advantage is that you can also "turn off" the field so the motor spins completely freely, with minimal loss.

Bjørn, you do a great job of crediting and licensing music for your content - as a musician and an EV enthusiast I appreciate that! I was intrigued by the 80’s smooth synth track you played twice - very nicely done - “Good Days” by Alex Makemusic. I look forward to hearing that bass in my iX40, a replacement for my 4 year old Etron 50, arriving in October. Your videos are a really helpful resource - always honest and very entertaining! To some it seems crazy not to go for a big battery after being constrained by the older Etron (150 miles on a good day) but I’m used to charger hopping, and as you say it’s all about efficiency. I’ve had 4 years to think about it, and another 40 miles is all I need - more in tandem with rest stops when driving longer distances . I think the obsession with super long ranges is more of an issue with new adopters (I do wish it charged above 150kw though). I ordered my iX knowing the Q6 just around the corner, but the price is the same when similarly specced, and I’m a bit bored by the grey black interior- the iX way ahead of its time! Thanks again

The efficiency mode makes a big difference, it will shut down the front motor for most of the time and tries to save energy where it can. This is one of the benefits of the motor design that BMW choose for this gen5 idrive motor. Nice video, again. When you compare drag coefficients, as you do in the video, then it makes even more sense to compare the maximum cross section (area) of these cars. That's not easy, I know, but a cross section of 3m^2 and 0.24 drag coefficient is still like dragging a 0.72m^2 plate through the air, when a 2m^2 car with 0.3 drag coefficient results in 0.6m^2. And the larger car probably has wider tires with more air and rolling resistance too. So, especially between SUV and sedan or coupé models this should explain a relatively large difference in km/Wh.

Early Model S had option to add a second charger to get faster AC charging speeds. US models had 40 A chargers, 80 A max for two chargers [19 kW]. European models had 3-phase chargers 11 kW each, 22 kW max for dual chargers. If Bjørn’s Millennium Falcon has dual chargers, then IIRC it could pull up to 32 Amps to get the max 22 kW 3-phase power. The 48 Amp number is Tesla’s max spec for its modern North American cars, which don’t have access to 3-phase power.

Bjorn, we got our ix40 in Ontario, Canada 3 weeks ago. First EV and, being techie, I have spent countless hours reading the 380 page manual to try to figure the vehicle out. We discovered your wonderfully humorous and educational videos and I think we have seen all of them on the ix40. We are driving to Florida from Ontario at Christmas. It will be multiple 10+ hour days. Playing wtih ABRP (that I learned of from you) it seems if I I drive over the speed limit the time lost to reduced efficiency is more than made up for in reduced charge times (so charge time increase is less that time saved speeding). Does this make sense to you - maybe I am just misunderstanding the ABRP output.

Normally I'd take good styling any day over Tesla's function follows form design philosophy just to squeeze out some extra range. Although maybe not in this case since the car's styling is ... controversial to say the least.

I have been an EQC driver for the last three years and I have to say it is a damn decent car. I have now ordered iX (for change more than anything as my lease was coming to an end). I have test driven the iX for about an hour and my verdict overall both are decent cars. EQC interior design feels and looks a little more superior vs iX and exterior is subjective but appears more sleeker and less boxy. However, EQC suspensions feel a little stiff on bumps. Ride quality overall (noise reduction and drive train) is similar between both but the iX feels slightly smoother when it comes to handling and the brakes are a little natural compared to EQC which is a bit of a typical EV brakes (when you brake aggressively you feel that it is just not stopping quick enough). So overall in terms of drive I felt the iX is a tad better (probably reflects the age so the iX feels like an upgraded version of EQC in terms of driving).
Another point is the standard features, Mercedes has a decent infotainment system (at the time of purchase I felt it was the best amongst competitors such as eTron and iPace) but even at AMG trim level there are bits that require license fees like apple car play don't come as standard which is really annoying (I know only £300 for activation but seems ridiculous given the initial outlay). BMW iX on the other hand has the new infortaiment system and the screen is super sharp and user friendly (probably the only one on par or above EQC in my opinion) then the standard features like wireless car play are quiet impressive. The head on display is one of the best I have seen in a car. BMW also feels a lot more spacious for front and back passengers. Overall I would say go for iX (but I might be biased because I have gotten used to EQC and you know, how the grass is always greener). Maybe the differences are subjective so I recommend you test drive both and choose based on your experience and budget. Hope this helps (if you haven't already made up your mind). Sorry for the essay

Hi Bjorn, any chance of testing MG ZS. I initially ordered after learning so much from your reviews. Concluded ID4 as the next best charging curve after e-tron. Then did the winter test drive not as accurate as urs made me change to ZS. Cause poor man like me can only afford 52 ID4. By learning urs ZS seems like great with battery heating option, smaller wheels, lighter on paper than ID, plus extra 16.4KW. Seen some German you tubers charge curve videos of ZS LR but I'm sure you can do way better than anyone. Also small ZS is using LFP.
Even I ordered ZS LR only God knows when will come 🤣. So, it'll be great if u can get your hands on those ZS LR and with LFP while you are not baby sitting will be great. Just in case poor man like me have to cancel ZS LR to SR or wait for the upcoming poor man EV's.

I had a model X ludicrous, and test drive the BMW iX. The BMW iX is far superior for comfort and Quality. Also a lot cheaper. For me. Model X was noisy and feel cheap in comparison. I had the FSD which is a joke in the Uk. Pointless to have because its no better than any standard driving assistance in a bmw or mercedes. Don’t understand why people go on and on about Tesla tech. The BMW have far more USEFULL tech like head up display and 360 cameras which no tesla have to date

In the last few years the car industry has changed so drastically. Ofc I do appreciate both full electric and hybrid vehicles and I`ll be lying if I say I`m not impressed by some of new tech these vehicles come with and yes it does feel cool the first time you enter those vehicles but..... At least for me all the excitement and amusement with the current gen cars wears off faster than the taste of expired bubblegum. Especially the interiors are just sooo bland and uninspiring that it`s straight up depressing rly. The same materials the same lines and the same horrible rectangular screens they just slap across the dashboard. And than you get to the "driving" - everything is either completely automatic or at the very least augmented with some kind of computer assist and absolutely nothing mechanical so not only they all look the same but they even feel the same.
I know this is not a popular opinion and most ppl would always lean towards the newest car possible if provided with a choice but I just can`t help but vent my frustration with the current trend among auto-makers and the precedent this sets for the future generations. I`ve always look at cars as something much, much more than utilitarian machines.
