How to Install a ‘Fortress Door’ to Keep Your Home Safe

- A crook determined to break into your home won't always be stopped by a locked front door. Video of a burglar kicking in the front door of L.A. Dodgers star Yasiel Puig shows just how easy it can be for thieves to gain access to a residence. There are steps you can take to protect yourself and turn your front door into a fortress. Inside Edition spoke to home improvement expert Jason Cameron, who said that most front doors are not secured properly when they are installed. #InsideEdition

No.... just takes a pebble and breaks window. No kicks needed!
back in 08 my dad bought a house in nowhere, north carolina. few days after moving in we were robbed. the same day my dad went to home depot and came home with a bunch of supplies to pin-lock all the windows and reinforce door frames with quarter inch steel. over the years we saw a couple scrapes and tool marks but never were we robbed again.
Why not shot them?
That’s kinda scary to wake up one morning and find evidence of somebody trying to burglarize your house or possibly worse
@@christiansnyder2183 it was actually when I came home from school my dad was at work and I started to notice things were slightly off so I went looking for the double barrel and it was missing.... so I ran to neighbors and called cops
@@xxmeanyheadxx it's one thing to realize you're being robbed, but to find out it's your weapon, what's stollen, is on another level. Did the guy get caught?
@@stardustsummoner4194 No, it ended up in a drill rap video
Don't forget that many door frame areas have been drilled and nailed to death. When you replace door reinforce and repair the jam. A weak structure can fail with sufficient force. I managed an apartment complex and we had break ins and a rape. I doubled up the wood, used security strike plates and wood cored metal doors. Also reinforce the hinged side! That is another failure point folks miss. One more note. Select knot and defect free wood and try to find with grain pattern that is parallel to the strike plate. Stronger against strike forces and will have better grip on the long screws.
You were still the manager after a few a break in and a RAPE ?!!!!!!
Rainbow six secure door lol
Smart
@@tonyblairs1888 Castle
Could you explain the grain being parallel to the strike plate? Is that for the grain of the wood of the door? Or the frame? And does that mean the wood grain should be mostly perpendicular to the direction the door opens?

I always thought the door kicking was just a hollywood-movie thing. I'm quite shocked to find out it seems to be normal in the US for doors to be so frail. Try that kicking here in Germany and you will at best break your ankle. I was looking into how to make my door safer but seems like I'll have to look up some german videos instead :D

I remember being some pub or perhaps gasthaus and looking g up at the ceiling joists that were probably something equivalent to 4x 8 or 4x 10. Set like a foot or at most 16 inches on center. Oh yeah who knows how old and dense and perfect that wood was? Those beams were 150-200 years old. I remember now this was in Mengsberg ( Neustadt) in Hessen.

Jason kicks the door 25 times, a criminal gives up after two kicks and uses a brick to put the window through instead.
That's what I said why go thru all the effort when the window is glass ?
xadam2dudex because most criminals won’t want to waste that much time one people probably heard them banging the door and if not that there definitely gonna hear that brick crashing though the window which will give you enough time if your home to prepare yourself and grab your fire arm, if your not home people on the block will most likely spot them.

Just a friendly reminder that everyone already knows that someone could try the window next. The point of this is to give you a 30 second warning to get a gun ready, and call 911 if you have time.

One great, albeit industrial looking solution is to use three 2×4s equally spaced across the back of the door and a locked metal security/storm door in front. The metal storm door should have spikes to absorb/deter kicks and other impacts. Had an angry manic depressive ex kick down a door with that fortress jamb featured in this video installed! 1. the jamb was about 2/3 up from the bottom of the door instead of halfway. 2. While installing the jamb I told her that it could be defeated by kicks to the MIDDLE causing the door to flex along a mid-longitudinal axis and pop the dead bolt, not knowing one day she would kick it down herself. 😅 Lesson be careful what you teach certain people!

What if you remove ALL THE WINDOWS
Put up plywood over windows inside! A little protection!
That happened to me, now I have no window bigger than a head
Or burglar bars
This reminds me of when Popular Science or Popular Mechanics tried to design a theft proof vacation house in the late 70's. They spent a lot of their effort making the door and door frame extremely strong. The thief went in through the windows.
Lolol
😂
You that’s true, but going though the window is not as easy as you think.
That's why they recommend planting hedges of thorny plants like roses under the windows. Won't stop a determined burglar, but will probably make you a way less attractive target than the house next door.
Great video 👍🏻
Another tip: If you have glass panes on your front door, be sure to have a double deadbolt lock. You lock it from the inside with a key. No one can break the glass, then reach in to unlock your door with a twist knob.. Be sure to keep the key nearby for an emergency exit in case of fire. 🔥

The first thing I do in any new house is replace all the door screws (including a few in each hinge) with 3.5" framing screws. This includes the door into the house from the garage. So few people know that a really common way for Intruders to get in is to break into your car and use the garage door opener.
thanks

Much easier than you think to kick in a door. I've been trying to tell people this for years. Some listen, most don't. Definitely need to fortify your doors. Thanks!
Maybe you should make a video in how to do that.

good tip about that reinforcement lock.
I'll be adding these to new/existing doors.
I alwsys install hd lock plates screwed into the studs, along with screws thru the hinges into the studs.
stop falling for doos with big glass windows or sidelites. easy to shatter and just open up your locks !
FBI OPEN UP

1:22 "this is sparta!"
I bought a product called door jamb armor which is thick metal and wraps around the jamb. Used a dozen 4 or 4.5" screws, needed to drill additional holes as it only provides 6. You must use the square drill bit or you'll strip the screws before you can drive them in 2 inches. You have to secure the hinges as well or the door is just strong on 1 side. You also need metal wraps for the knobs.
....then they break your window and climb in...
@@annemarie8483 yeah, it's really easy to quickly climb through broken glass, and the sound won't give me ample notice to have my sights trained on their center mass well before they can do anything. The point isn't to prevent entry, it's to slow down entry. Cute story though sweetheart.

There is something extremely therapeutic about watching videos about security doors, windows, and things that frustrate thieves.
First thing I did on my house, was add that strike plate with 3 inch screws. You'd have to kick the studs out of the wall to open the door.
Strike plate was like 8 bucks, peace of mind is priceless.
The window be like oh no I am next. Next episode window fortress.
The very best way to secure any door is to install a gate rod at the bottom of the door drilled directly into the concrete slab or foundation, the thicker the rod the better. Believe me it works great 👍
I want a door that kicks back.
They call that a booby trap and unfortunately it's a felony.
I feel bad about those two dog owner at first 😂
Amazing!!!
Why so easy to kick in? Despite the low crime rate, here in Hong Kong most houses have a metal gate in addition to a hard wooden door bolted to a steel frame embedded into concrete wall. Burglary by forcing into homes is very rare.
I am a lifetime carpenter and I have done that type of installation for my entire career and that is why you should hire a professional to do the job also another thing I always found when people install the door knob they do it wrong the little half moon on the bolt is called the bolt lock it should not enter the hole in the jamb it needs to be against the strike plate so the bolt will not be able to be opened with a credit card
Lol you weren't giving that second door as much aye. 🤣
“ . . . Should we tell him that he can stop?”

In Peru is a "rule" using metal door for the entrance. It is way more safe than wood.
Isn't that more dangerous if the house gets on fire.

I can promise you the walls will fall down before the door does.

I was assigned to a SEAL Team as a builder support guy. One of the tasks was to build doors for a breacher team to practice on. Obviously, theyre bringing the "A" game but I would build them to spec. They have longer strike plates than that and hinge security plates as well. But there is a limit. Id always build at least 1 strongest door, they knew it and they would blast the hinges off, blow the lock set with a charge and be right behind it.
If a SEAL team shows up at your front door, you've got bigger things to worry about.
