Z-Drive on the Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi With Captain Zoe

- We take a look at a water taxi that works on the New River in Fort Lauderdale. Among other things that make this interesting is that the water taxi has no reverse, but a Z-Drive that can spin 360 degrees. Captain Zoe (a friend I grew up with from Monhegan Island) shows us how it all works.

I recognized ZZ right away! Rotu tribe. 😉
Rumor has it that Tim was a Love Boat Captain before hitting the NY harbor. Such fame on this channel.
😂😂😂😂😂 You are correct! That's where you saw her first. Thank you for watching Scott. CUOTO
That was fun to watch a passenger ferry in a different harbor. I’m a small passenger ferry captain in New York Harbor we have our own fun at every landing with ever changing currents etc. hmmmm… maybe Ft. Lauderdale Water Taxi would be a great retirement gig 😃.
Maybe you guys should let me come and do a video with you? Thank you for watching. CUOTO
What a difference a week makes!!! Chilling in the warmth to Snowpocalypse 2022!! All I can think of is what Johnny from Airplane would say…. “It’s a Nor’eastah, It’s a Nor’eastah…. Aunty Em!!!!” 🤣 #CUOTO
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channel Ian. I hope you are home safe today.. CUOTO
What a great, light hearted video Tim! Something similar to Z drive for smaller boats is Volvo's IPS drive system. The first one in SW Florida dissolved like an alka seltzer tablet. Volvo contacted me to help diagnose it. Turns out that they were using magnesium anodes. I had them send me the metallurgical specs on the castings and guess what, lots of magnesium. Took me a while to convince them that we have a hell of a lot higher salinity than they do. I fabed up some actual zincs and problem solved.
😲😲😲 Thank you for watching Tom. That's amazing. Great job. CUOTO
Re: STCW. When I was taking mine, of course, abandoning ship in a " gumby" suit was required. The instructor used a college pool. To simulate, jumping from the weather deck of a cargo/ container ship, we had to jump from a 10 meter diving board. The gumby suit was a medium, but to large for me. Shuffling to the end of the board, I had a fear of tripping and doing a belly flop. The instructor was adamant that we stick one hand between the hood and our face, just below the ear. This was to allow the trapped air to escape and prevent rupturing the eardrum, when we hit the water. And yes we had to remove the suit, and then as a group, turn over an eight person life raft while being sprayed with a hose.
Yes, that what we had to do as well. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
The Three of you are from Monhegan Island ME and all three are ship captains..... I find this amazing..... folks reading this? look up where it is.
10 points for paying attention! 😂 Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Seems like the reasonable thing to do.
I'll bet that everyone on that island has been a boat captain at one time or another.
Captain, a nice change of content showing even more of your personality and cool people you know! No plans for Ft Lauderdale, but if... I'll certainly give Captain Zoe your "howdy". Thanks for sharing, that was fun! CUOTO!
Thank you for watching Randy. I highly recommend it. She's great! CUOTO
Hi Tim, Water taxi, tour boats are always good for seeing the city from a different angle, in my travels I've used many types of boats and must say I was glad to get off some of them.
When my wife came to the UK for the first time my boat was in Holland, we planned to drive over there and spend a few weeks boating the canals. Sadly the visa agency didn't grant her a EU visa. So I went over and brought the boat back, met my wife in the south coast town of Ramsgate and we sailed around the English Channel and up into The Thames Estuary. To keep her busy and mind off trying to throw up, I put her on the helm and knocked the self steer off, she kept a prefect course. Once on the upper Thames river she steered again flat calm water and all she had to do was stay Starboard side of the channel. impossible!!!!!! Her excuse was there are too many nice houses to look at.
Your trip with Capt Zoe reminded me of that.
PS My wife got a visa from the Dutch embassy in Saigon and we later spent 3 months touring Holland, Belgium and France.
Always good to hear from you. Thank you for watching. Another wonderful story. CUOTO
Fellow Mainers!!! I grew up in Bangor. I'm now land locked in Tucson Az. I really miss Maine......
Hello Mike. Welcome. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
I've been on the double decker taxis, but not that one Zoe was piloting. The houses there are amazing and that taxi service is awesome.
Thank you for watching Anthony. CUOTO
Those water taxis are a lot of fun, and a great way to get around the city
Thank you for watching. (Great screen name) If you are new to the channel, Welcome. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. CUOTO
Never heard of the river and I’ve been there before. Will have to go back. Thank you. Mike ATL
Thank you for watching Mike. CUOTO
This is really neat, Zoe is a cuttie! Will have to check this tour/Taxi out next time there. Thanks Tim!
Thank you for watching Robert. CUOTO
A wonderful diversion from the tugboat Tim. Great to see Capt. Zoe in charge and the fantastic way she takes it all in her stride with the responsibility of passengers onboard. A good break for you as well. I see there has been a statue toppled in San Juan, PR! It was fixed and reinstalled later.
Oh Norm, you are more in the know than I am. But in my defense, I have been stuck at work for almost 6 weeks. (Going back to PR on Wednesday). Thank you so very much for watching and supporting both channels Norm! CUOTO
I lived on the new river!! Citrus Isles. I was raised in Ft Lauderdale. Ran a tour boat in the waterways of Miami. Never ran a Z drive. Interesting. Thanks.
Thank you for watching Fred. CUOTO
Thank you for watching Fred. CUOTO
You know Tim, When you retire from "Tug Boat Life" You would make a great water Taxi Captain in Puerto Rico! You got the personality for it! Thanks for sharing! 😎👍⚓CUOTO
Thank you very much Rick. I think I would like that. CUOTO
Yeah before I retired from a construction-industry-related job there was a mandatory "HazMat" class taken on an annual basis. Some hazardous materials content but a lot of first aid and fire safety along with general workplace safety. Our union contract stipulated that the employer paid for the training but not for our time. So these classes were usually held in the evening after work and the instructors would try to make it light-hearted to keep us awake but the bottom line was "Safety is no joke". So I can see why the purveyors of a safety training program would not want their content turned into entertainment for some CZcams channel. Captain Zoe has a cool gig!
Thank you very much for watching Paul. CUOTO
interesting tour on the new river excellent video thank you tim and captain zoe
Thank you for watching James. CUOTO
TIM! I got my start at the ft Lauderdale water taxi as a deckhand, and got all my experience driving the water taxi fleet after building the sea -time and let me tell you I’ve had some real hair raising experiences driving these z-drives in some WILD weather at night! LOL made me a better captain, just wish the pay matched the liability you take with passengers and drunkards navigating the same channels as you. Great video very nostalgic for me.
Thank you for watching. That's great! It sure looked like a lot of fun. CUOTO
Capt. Tim, Thank you for another great video. It was fun watching Capt. Zoe at work. STCW was a great experience especially the fire training. They sure made it seem real. Thank you and your company for the educational videos. Capt Bill
Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channel Bill. STCW looses some of its luster after a few refreshers. 😂 CUOTO
Nice little drive on the river. Hand have a beer too.
Thank you for watching! CUOTO
A real pity plan A did not workout as that sounds very interesting, However plan B was excellent and so nice to meet up with Captain Zoe
Yes Sir! Thank you for watching Mike. CUOTO
That was fun riding along with Zoe. A timelapse of her doing the full Fort Lauderdale water taxi system along with some points of interest would make an interesting video.
Thank you for watching Barry. Great idea. Maybe the next time I'm down there I'll do just that. CUOTO
Cool video, even though it was "plan B." I am from Fort Lauderdale and I grew up only a few blocks from the New River, brought back some memories...
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. CUOTO
Enjoyed the cruise with Zoe, need to visit down her way. Thanks Tim.
Thank you for watching Milan. CUOTO
Tim
That sure was interesting. Quite the diversion from industrial/ Commercial type work that you do.
Thanks for another great on the water video
Thank you for watching Mike. CUOTO
Hi Tim, thank you for your videos and especially for this one! Having been to the States only twice so far the watertaxi in Fort Lauderdale has been my favorite choice. Sad to see they seem to have shorten the trip on the New River. In earlier days they made it up to the Downtowner Saloon, my other favorite place to be. Be sure I will say Hi to Captain Zoe if I can make it there again. And if I come to New York be sure I will wave my hands to any tug I can see to say Hello to you! All the best, stay healthy! Regards from Germany
Thank you very much for watching! That is very nice of you. CUOTO
My wife and I love the water taxi in Ft. Lauderdale. Such a great service.
Thank you for watching Chris. It sure is nice. CUOTO
Cool Tim, great to see Zoe at the helm! I’ve sailed on the New river in an 100’ Broward marine motor yacht. Very Tight is what comes to mind. Hahaha CUOTO.
Thank you for watching Jerome. CUOTO
You never disappoint! This may have been your Plan B, and while Plan A sounded like an absolute blast, Plan B was a hoot! I felt like I was along for the ride, as always! Captain Zoe seems like a fun friend! Enjoyed this a lot!
Thank you very much for watching Laura. CUOTO
Great video.. Thankyou

Zoe, there was plenty of room on that door for Jack.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Thanks for the tour Capt. CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channel James. CUOTO
I always thought it would be fun to watch a tractor tug at work from the helm. Nice video and looks like you had a fun time.
I certainly did Richard. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Makes me want to go back to Florida for a visit, it's been way too long! Thank you!
Thank you very much for watching Eric. CUOTO
Tim thank you for a great video like always.
As a truckdriver in Europe we have to do 35hours of training in 5 years time to be able to keep our license. If we don't do those 35hours we lose our license and can't work anymore.
I didn't know the shipping industry had some kind of the same thing.
Loved this video again, keep up the good work💪 ur a lot of fun to watch and im learning a lot from every video.
Keep it up Tim👍👋
Thank you very much for watching Lars? My friend, Rune, has told me Lars is a Norwegian name (he is Norwegian). If so, be on the look out. I have been saying for over a year now that when overseas travel gets better, I'm coming to see you guys for a few drinks at the pub. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Rune is correct, it is a Scandinavian name. I'm not from Scandinavia tho, im from The Netherlands. Its not that far. Looking forward to meat you one day.
Keep up the good work💪
@@larsmeijerink5471 The Netherlands are my biggest European audience. First on my list to visit! CUOTO
Tim the new river is a nice ride at night i use the water taxi all the time when i am in Fort Lauderdale and i have been on CAPT Zoe boat i will be back in Fla soon keep up the good work be safe
Thank you for watching Wayne. CUOTO
Totally enjoyed this Tim. It's -18 C (-0.4 F) in Antigonish Nova Scotia this morning,
so I have lots of time for you(se) guys in Florida. Think I'll watch it again.
That's great Michael. You can warm up at my other channel, SV Paquita, too. New video is up for patrons now And will be viewable to everyone else a a day or two. CUOTO
Hey Mike -17 c in New Glasgow this AM ,
My wife, Georgia Anacker says it's fun to see a couple of the "kids" from Monhegan and says hi! I've been enjoying TimBatSea for the commercial content and knowing you are the son of two of my Monhegan favorites, Peter and Ricky. Take care Tim and keep up the good work!
Thank you very much Dennis. That makes me so happy. Take care of yourself. CUOTO
Another great video Capt Tim! Zoe fits right in the mold that most Captains on the Water Taxi we’re made. Never met one I didn’t like! If you took the River taxi to the transfer and traveled North on the ICW. We have a place behind the next to the last stop. Maybe some day I’ll see you in Shooters??? Have a great day and CUOTO TOO
Thank you for watching Karl. That would be terrific! CUOTO
That was different and fun!
Thank you for watching and I'm so happy you liked it. CUOTO
CAPT Zoe shows how well woman can multitask. Good luck to her and thanks to you for an interesting video.
She sure can. Thank you again for watching. CUOTO
That was a great change up Tim. Captain Zoe was so energetic and ready to chat. Maybe the training folks will give it consideration down the road.
Hopefully so! Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea I came across the Mass Maritime CZcams channel today and they had a live cam on the canal. Very cool. There was even a tug going by with a barge. Note that the tug was not the preferred colors of you know who.
I been on the water taxi many of times when I was going to school down there for my Captains ticket. Was nice down there for almost a month to do it way back in the day. CUOTO
Thank you for watching Jay. It sure is nice there. CUOTO
You're from MONGEGAN!? Good stuff! I'm a Mainer and I sailed the Monhegan Regatta back in high school, always wanted to visit, but I've only seen it from a half a mile away :(
😂😂😂 Oh yes. Thank you for watching. I went back last summer (see my other channel for video). It was a great place to grow up, but it's harder to go back after being away. CUOTO
Thanks for introducing us to Zoe but, I've really been looking forward to seeing some tug operations in the sheet ..... I mean snow. Oh well, I guess you're the lucky one who was able to enjoy some warmth, visit with an old friend and work on your tan.
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. I did shoot two episodes right before the big blizzard we had, but we were weather bound when it was going on. CUOTO
Very nice
Thank you for watching Dave. CUOTO
Capt Zoe reminds me of Linda Greenlaw from Stonington.
Thank you for watching Joe. I believe Linda and Zoe have been friends for many years. CUOTO
Fix your hoody string!! LOL. Love both of your channels.
😂😂😂 In watching this after shooting it, the hoody string problem drove me crazy as well. 😂. Thank you for watching John. CUOTO
Yes I liked this one of course I would like to see any of the travels you go like restaurants boat shows Hotels anything would also like to see other rugs like the smaller ones with azopods even tiny ones I like them all
Thank you for watching Michael. Sounds great. I'm on it. CUOTO
Used to take the water taxi's all the time when I lived down there.. Usually Had a boat in the yard at Apex Marine back in the day.. Sometimes for 3-4 months... Loved riding around on them.. Believe is was like 15 bucks for an all day pass..
Thank you for watching Sam. CUOTO
Nice video Tim 👌👌great holland
Thank you very much for watching Jacob. CUOTO
The training video would of been awesome. The plan b was very cool to.
Thank you for watching Thane. CUOTO
Nice seeing some Maine people do well.
Thank you for watching Bill. CUOTO
Interesting. Now, when the taxi is docked, are there lines we just didn't get to see holding it in place, or is Zoe keeping it in place with assistance from Jeff?
CUOTO
Thank you for watching. I am sure when done for the night, the taxi gets secured with lines. But in the video and while I was onboard, she was able to hold the boat in place with the Z-Drive working ahead. CUOTO
Thanks Tim… still, its good to know you get survival, fire control training. BTW, we hit our low for this winter here in Chiang Mai Thailand… 52 degrees. Haha
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching Frank. CUOTO
I watched that video of Tristin delivering AWOL through there, I think the same canal? Mind blowing. Thanks for sharing plan “B”. Could have watched the whole ride.
Thank you for watching Jay and Debbie. CUOTO
That was fun!
Thank you for watching and supporting the channel David! It's always good to see old friends. CUOTO
Nice Live confidently and peacefully
Thank you for watching John. CUOTO
2’ of snow here in Boston & you are on a vessel that takes you to a boat for Margaritaville. Yikes, that’s a nice way to travel!
Uh, Cape towing in Florida? Did he find a new Cape Ann down there? Sweet.
Thank you for watching. Cape Ann Towing was started in Massachusetts but was moved a long time ago down to Florida. CUOTO
There’s one thing you’ll never see on your tug… a tip jar 😂 Actually, it was fun… thanks. Definite change.
Thank you for watching Jim. CUOTO
I moved to New Zealand in 2005 after living in the UK, and found it refreshing, and just a bit weird, that Kiwis do not expect tips. You'll see the occasional tip jar in cafes etc. where working holiday visitors are employed, but it's likely the only people who put anything in those jars are offshore tourists, and there have been precious few of them since COVID.
@@TrevorDennis100 As a born and bred Kiwi... I certainly remember a time when tip jars were simply not a "thing" here in NZ... and as you point out... even now they are few and far between and there is NO expectation at all for them to be used... no-one will glare at you if you don't. Also as a parent and uncle who's had relatives work in hospitality I also know that, generally speaking, the jar in a restaurant here is divided up among all staff - the wait staffer who provided you amazing service doesn't get the direct benefit of a tip!
Also, for clarity for non-kiwis... sure, hospitality isn't that highly paid... but we do have minimum adult wages and a "living wage" so the tips are not relied upon as part of your primary income when you work there. I knew of a couple of restaurant owners who simply pockets the tip jar into the takings for the restaurant!
She didn't let you take a crack at lol, it I'm assuming its a single drive, the smaller provincial ferries are Z drive you can tell when you've got a captain that isn't used to them the ship can start a rocking.
Thank you for watching. Yes. It is a single drive. CUOTO
Something else to add to my US trip if we're ever allowed to leave Australia. I'd love to see those yachts and go fast boats.
Oh yes. If you 2ant to see boats, that's the place to be. Thank you for watching Grantley. CUOTO
Sounds like you went to MPT down in Ft lauderdale! Bunch of decent instructors there as that’s where I just took my course!
Thank you very much for watching David. I did. CUOTO
Hi Captain Tim. I really like the story about the Z Drive Ferry. Could you please direct me to find some information about these boats, and where the Z drive is actually installed. I can find information about really big tugboats.
Thank you for watching Ed. I am not sure where to go to find that information. Let me know if you find it. CUOTO
Nice little short vid there Tim. You sound a bit under the weather there and hope you feel better. Thanks for sharing. #CUOTO.
😂😂😂😂. Oh I had been at the bar all afternoon. 😂 Thank you for watching. CUOTO

No idea, but I would assume so. Thank you for watching Eric. CUOTO
I just did my STCW revalidation in December. I took it at SUNY, a lot less travel for me.
Sunny in November. 🤔 I was thinking Lauderdale might be better this time of year. 😂 Thank you for watching. CUOTO
fun times
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
I can see Tim running one of those taxi's... Liquor license! lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Geez Tim, your lucky doing SAS in a pool, we do ours in the ocean usually in winter so we know what it really is like and how hard it is. I would have told ya about your lunch, but Zoe might not have seen it as she was on the opposite side to you and your lunch. Our charter boats only have a liquor licence for when they are on charter not when they are used to ferry passengers. It's also weird that Zoe loads bow on, all of our ferries load side on and usually from the stern quarter. What time of day was that trip at? Z drives are a great idea and should be used more. When I go to a new area or OS I love to do tourist trips like that as they usually tell you lots about the area and of course, I Love boats and boat trips. I used to run a wooden 33' charter boat/ferry and it went between Williamstown and Docklands (CBD).
Thank you for watching Tim. That was just as the sun was setting. CUOTO
I really enjoyed that video Tim. She is much prettier than you too. I didn't know there was anything like that. Looks like fun. Havagudun Cap.
😂😂😂😂 Agreed! Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
12:27 Five shorts are for nautical clearance. Three shorts are for railroad reverse but what code did zoe use?
Thank you for watching Carl. I believe you heard 1 long, (departing) and 3 short (backing out). CUOTO
I've actually encountered problems due to a LACK of ongoing training, and I'm only driving forklifts. Rules and best practices evolve and change over time and if you were trained to older practices and standards you're likely to foul up a process, or, at the very least, end up in conflict with people who were trained to newer standards. At my job they've occasionally tried to announce safety/policy changes through day-to-day management, and it just doesn't work. Managers don't know the ins-and-outs of all the jobs they're overseeing (it's way too much for any single person to keep track of), and nobody trusts them to sacrifice productivity for safety or quality.
Thank you for watching Dion. Yes, it can be difficult. CUOTO
Hi Captain Tim!

Thank you for watching and supporting the channels Melissa. CUOTO
Capt. Tim I know this is off topic but would you mind giving a little insight on who meow man is I see a lot of guys from the east coast talking about but I just don’t get the story behind it lol
Thank you for watching William. He and I have tried to get together to do a video, but it just hasn't happened yet. When I get back to work I will try again. If you don't hear from me, drop me a reminder. CUOTO
Did you get to pass or have to wait for the infamous New River RR bridge?
Thank you for watching Mikey. I didn't go that far on that trip. CUOTO
Just as an aside... "unlike school teachers" - maybe in the US? But here in New Zealand my wife is a teacher and while she has both diploma and degree level qualifications... she also has to maintain her registration by renewing a practicing certificate every three years... and to maintain registration she needs to engage in ongoing courses/training to gain "CPD" (continuing professional development) points. My own profession (local government regulatory) requires maintaining competencies and professional registrations and ongoing/continuing education too.... Now I know you can't know everything about every profession... so yeah... just thought you might be curious to know... I suspect many many trades and professions these days have registrations/certifications that timeout/expire meaning you cannot do your job so need ongoing training... such is life in the modern world!
Thank you for watching Heath. I believe you may have misunderstood me. "Unlike school teachers who have to get so many educational credits" we have to refresh our credentials every five years. CUOTO
Gotta be a real 'people person' to do that job. I went to sea to get away from people, as soon as you throw the lines the rest of the world doesn't matter.
Thank you for watching Roger. CUOTO
What was the temperature Tim…. Must not have been to warm if Zoe had a “wooly pully” on?
Also I want Zoe’s job😂
