  • Showing our skin barrier respect and love is critical for healthy skin.
    When it comes to skincare, irritants and allergens that trigger inflammation in the skin aren’t our friends -- even if they are natural! Natural does not always mean safe when it comes to skincare. While breathing in essential oils can be so helpful to dial down stress, many of these EOs can do a number on our skin barrier when directly applied to the skin. You might see the damage in the form of stinging, burning, or a rash OR you might have subclinical inflammation which accelerates skin aging and other skin related issues -- and this is damage that you can’t immediately see, but it’s still happening.
    We also have to consider phototoxicity and hyperpigmentation stemming from certain EOs.
    Hormone disruption from certain popular EOs? We’re covering that in this video too.
    I have sensitive skin and many of my patients have sensitive, reactive skin. Fragrance in skin care can be really problematic for people with sensitive, reactive skin even if the fragrance comes from natural sources. Again, natural does not mean safe when it comes to skincare.
    I’m taking a balanced approach here and giving you my honest opinions, as always. I know that some of my patients and friends live and die by their EO products, so if that’s the case for you, I’m sharing tips on how to minimize the damage to your skin barrier if you do choose to use these types of products.
    Looking forward to your questions!

    I am using essential oils as part of my skin care and all I can say is that it's absolutely good to my skin. I had a lot of breakout but my skin now is at its best. No more acne and very smooth.
    There are rules however;
    Citrus oils should not be used in morning and pure essentials oils should be diluted in carrier oils like jojoba. You should have mentioned these points at least.
    Disclaimer: I am not in anyway connected to companies selling EOs. I just personally love using them.

      @@swatisharma5187 and yeah in case u don't have so sensitive skin, I will say lemon oil is also amazing, never use lemon directly on ur skin I repeat never but lemon oil if used properly is amazing, I used it mixed with aloevera gel at night time n it works amazing for me, but remember always to use only two drops at a time, if u have a bit sensitive skin do patch testing first n start from one drop, always mix it with something, it can be moisturizer, aloevera gel, any skin oil, almond oil, jojoba oil or aby brand skin oil, always use it at night and never go in heat after applying it, I made a cream by mixing two full tbsp of aloevera gel, half tbs tea tree oil, 3/4 tbs of lemon oil, few drops of glycerin and that's it n it's a good night cream but again don't use it at day time I hope this helps 😊😊

    A friend is using frankincense oil to treat a skin lesion because she is uninsured. Her sibling had Moh's surgery on their face and so called reconstructive surgery afterwards. It was expensive ( even with insurance), it was very painful and it left a large permanent scar on their face that will never go away. I would say to this doctor that some people have no other choice than to be their own doctor. It would seem that the only treatment conventional medicine has is a one size fits all approach to cut up a person, then flood their bodies with poisons that are supposed to "heal". And they issue warnings on using essential oils that have been used for centuries. There are very limited options for lower income people and quite frankly, with due diligence, I trust some of the old remedies more than I do the current medical "industry". If I have a broken bone, I'll go to a doctor. But for many other things, I will try to treat myself.

      essential oils can develop physical, mental, emotional issues that you wouldn't associate with it, from over exposure over time. like lower testosterone, or overly emotional issues (hormonal effects), male breast enlargement.. some people rely on it like how the majority of people use soap for everyday life. 20 years of that kind of exposure, wow. well, you're an adult, it's up to you to decide what you do with your body and how you spend your money. good for you, if you don't have any allergies with use of about 100 different oils. wow. please don't use it on your pets. i read a commenter that uses it on her poor dog. dogs and cats can have complications from ingesting, or just inhaling, or getting it on their skin. if it is bad for your pets, could it also be bad for people --have to wonder. if you have a pet and you use essential oils, seek advice from your local veterinarian

Can you please give a link to the research paper you are talking about on lavender & rosemary oil having similar effects as parabens? Hi Dr. Bowe,
    I purchased a moisturizer balm that I am enjoying very much however it does have a low amount of Orange Oil. I did reach out to the company because I was upset that they did not list:
    Benzyl Alcohol, Linalool, Geraniol, Eugenol and Benzyl benzoate on the website but on the product box it did.
    This was their response (does this make a difference in the way they interact with our skin? Natural vs added?):
    I am happy to answer this question for you- and I am truly sorry for the confusion! Benzyl Alcohol, Linalool, Geraniol, Eugenol and Benzyl benzoate are natural components found in essential oils. Essential oils all contain many natural, chemical constituents in their makeup. Because essential oils do come from plants, there can be allergen risks- and because our products are EU compliant, we were required to list that on our product boxes. Please note that those are not ingredients that we add to the formula- just natural components in the essential oils.

    • @AdamDavid
      @AdamDavid Před rokem +1

      In the USA there is no legal requirement to list the constituents of an essential oil, on the name of the oil. Good luck. The EU requires that the constituents of essential oils be listed, in Canada we are only obligated to list natural chemicals if the are on the Cosmetics Hot List. Otherwise we just list the Essential Oil name. The concentration of Essential oils in my products never go above 1.9% of the weight of the oils used in the product (essential oils only dilute in other oils and not in water) it's really safe to use essential oils, when you follow IFRA standards, unfortunately the USA is 20 years behind when it comes to consumer protection. You have people marketing essential oils as if they cure diseases, that's illegal in every other G7 country and the EU.
      I only use citrus essential oils at 1.9% (if they are phototoxic) in soap products because they are wash off and there is 0.01% risk that you would have any reaction from UV light because it is not being absorbed into your skin.
      There are massive restrictions for leave on products the IFRA standards are strict for leave on products. A fragrance oil like orange five fold would be used at 0.1% of the weight of soluble oils that's a soft oil that's added at the primary stage of the manufacturer of a skin cream for example. You add other oils later on including the fragrance oil or essential oil but it is based on the weight of oils in the first stage of a 3 stage cream or body butter recipe.
      As I stated the law at least for me says that we are not obligated to list the organic components of the essential oil just the essential oil itself when we file our Cosmetics notification form with the government every single product we sell must be registered with the government nor is it required to be on the label.
      I have never been told by any of my customers that they have ever had a problem with my skin creams (only one has orange and bergamot essential oils), even though I place a warning on my label that says "Do not apply to face. Use caution in the sun, this product contains phototoxic naturally occurring organic compounds that react to Sunlight and UV radiation which may cause skin irritation and swelling. If irritation develops stop using this product immediately. Please notify us of any adverse reactions as soon as possible.
      I appreciate that Dr Bowe is advising caution, because honestly most people want a quick fix for things, and they don't educate themselves, or with that whole "freedom of speech" thing you have in the US people are mislead by people with their own agenda. Ask questions always, buy also ask for sources, information doesn't just exist and pop out of thin air if somebody tells you something then they need to be able to back up where they got that information and if somebody else told them and then they spread that information it is literally hearsay and absolutely useless you want to know what studies show that something is effective or not not that it's just an opinion. There were many people who had opinions during the Salem witch trials look where that got them.

    Q: Are citrus/plant extracts safe to use PM as part of a wipe (specifically Dr. Dennis Gross Ultra Sensitive Daily Peels Step1)? Could it hurt or help my hyperpigmentation? How long after exposure does skin stay phototoxic? I'm bought these to treat hyperpigmentation, dark scars, boxcar scars from mole removal (one of which is still healing) on my 34 yo dry/combo post-IPL EAST ASIAN skin. I'm concerned about the many plant extracts, high alcohol %, and acid size/composition that may worsen my pigmentation! I know a lot of safety depends on formulation & usage. I can't return but would rather toss it or give it to a caucasian friend if it's not a good formulation for me. On non-exfoliating days, I'll be starting a routine of: 0.3% retinol + 2% bakochiol, 2% alpha arbutin + HA , Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%. Appreciate your info on a confusing topic!! I am immunocompromised and have had to develop a more robust sense of skin health than my former life. Most people are totally colonized by bacteria and fungus. It is partly why their skin ages faster, they have weird rashes and blemishes, etc. Essential oils kill that stuff when used properly. You won't need deodorants either. These oils can even knock out the bacteria that causes acne on your legs. I obviously am not anti-medical intervention. I get infusions. If need antibiotics I will use them. But most people don't need medical interventions most of the time. They just need to learn how to use tools like essential oils, herbs, and so on to deal with minor issues.

      There are a number of oils you can use for hair care, depending on what you want to achieve and or alleviate. Lavender, Rosemary & Geranium are three that have many functions and can be applied “neat” by putting a few drops into your hands and massaging into the scalp, and or hair then washing out. You can also add a few drops into your shampoo as well. Always make sure to patch test any oils you have not used before to gauge sensitivity. Always use certified pure therapeutic grade oils. I have been using dōTERRA oils for about 8 yrs. with consistently great results. You can find many resources and educational info on their website & can also either sign up to get become a member yourself and save a good deal of money or find someone to order from.

      Honestly love you should look for more research about essential oils. Most of the doctors have NO IDEA of the benefits of it. Plus this "dermatologist" if we can call her like that, doesn't share any sources of her "knowledge". Just know that certificate doctors are promoting molecules to get you buy pharmacy products. Essential oils are well known in ancient medicines like Ayurveda or Chinese Medicine since the edges of time and they have the most wonderful skin and hair you could see. Just don't trust doctors blindly. They don't know anything about benefits of nature. But it's true that in most products, the dosage of EO are too strong for skin tolerence. They are very strong ingredients that should be use carefuly and less is more. Do your own research, the secret to have a perfect skin is to look for knowledge on a lot of different souces and horizons. You should really look into Ayurvedic products, Chinese Medicine products, or naturopathy products. Hope it will help you

And as far as using oils that increase photo sensitivity, I use them either in the evening when I can, wait before heading out into direct sunlight for long periods of time and always use sunscreen. Fearmongering or scaremongering is a form of manipulation which causes fear by using exaggerated rumors of impending danger.[1]
      Theory Edit
      According to evolutionary psychology, humans have a strong impulse to pay attention to danger because awareness of dangers has been important for survival throughout our evolutionary history. This effect is amplified by cultural evolution when the news media cater to our appetite for news about dangers.[2]
      The attention of citizens is a fiercely contested resource that news media, political campaigners, social reformers, advertisers, civil society organizations, missionaries, and cultural event makers are competing over, according to attention economy.[3]
