2:13:03 Chaz - "I'm not going to forget to use Gimli's special ability this time"
2:13:50 - Puts all 4 cards in discard pile :D
Currently rewatching all the LotR movies and I feel like I’ll need this game in my life for when I’m done. Thanks for the wonderful vid and to the guide, Rodney!
Yay! Season 8 - great! ;-P We are really happy that you are doing this show for so long now.
Our result out of these 300 episodes and all the livestreaming:
- many hours of entertainment
- great rules explainations
- lots of laughter
- many games in our shelves because of your show
We really appritiate all the work and effort you put in this show, on and off camera!
Thanks so much for the note Ani. Take care and stay safe. -Lincoln
That sexy box flip though!!! Rodney you did it again 👍
You guys totally rock! Thanks so much for giving us an in-depth game. I just love watching you play these longer games … nobody does it better. :)
Just played this an hour ago with my buddies. First time for each of us. Initially, it was a nightmare referring to the rule books, but after 3 turns of this back and forth, we got used to the flow of the game and it really opened up and became very enjoyable.
Even though we failed the first objective (ran out of time due to too much fun sniping orcs and gobbos), we'll restart the campaign now that we understand how the game works.
10/10.
Great group. Love the different personalities. To another great season and to many more.
after Gimli stomps out all the maggots, we faintly hear Legolas in the distance “that still only counts as one!”
Absolutely the best play-through and how-to. It answered all my question that I had after playing through twice. And it was entertaining. I was worried about you guys there towards the end.
Thanks guys. I've just started playing this game, actually just finished this first scenario this morning. It's so cool how differently it plays. Our decisions and luck with tests does obviously affect how the game advances, which tells me there's much more replayability than I imagines. Can't wait to continue with the adventure and hopefully get my daughter on board with me.
My first ever Watch it Played video (and still my favorite) was the one for the Lord of the Rings LCG which I've been playing for the last 9 years. Now I'm coming back to watch Rodney teach us Journeys in Middle Earth and it feels like reuninitng with an old friend in a familiar place. Keep up the great content!
I've had this game on the shelf for a while. I did paint all the mini's a few weeks back. Now you've motivated me to get started. Thanks
I have had this game for an entire year. Just opened the game today, and started to play it. Had no idea Rodney and the awesome folks at Game Night had a video?!? Been watching both of your channels for years, keep up the awesome content. This video was GREAT - highly enjoyed it.
Why didn't you open it sooner?
@@Zaloomination right?
1:23:00: Bilbo was Hidden at the time, the defensive part of Hidden is not optional and automatically triggers when attacked. It would have prevented the entire attack since it was all physical Damage and then Bilbo would not need to make a negate test to save the cards (You don't need to take a negate test if you don't want to.)
I can’t believe you finally did my favourite game!! Cheers and stay safe!
You guys and gal were a real treat to watch. It looks like you had a great time. It was a real treat to see Rodney, who explains games better.than anyone I've seen, and creator Chas join the group. Love, love this game. Stay safe.
What do you mean "creator Chas"? What did he create?
Great game to start the new season of Gamenight! Also, excited to have Chaz here!
I watch this stuff while I work and its a good thing, because, this show is costing me $$. This game arrives today.
After Gimli stomps the maggots, Legolas yells out. “That still only counts as one!”
Not even 10 minutes into this video and can see you guys are having fun together. Also, this video is really well done. Lighting, sound, the picture in picture showing the app screen. Well done you guys. Found this channel because of the Lord of the Rings game, but may stick around and watch some more stuff too. 🙂
Enjoyed the video and the whole of the game, but the post-game discussion was HUGELY helpful and insightful. Thanks so much for sharing this!
hi from the Reunion Island (fr.). SO great to find you back ! Keep on playing, it keeps people in great shape! I start playing to boardgames, role playing games and wargame, back in the 70. In the 80, people turned massively to computer and video games,. After awhile, youngsters tried these "all cardboard and plastic" games they heard about their parents.. and there was that rebirth of games, with simplier rules and a great deal of fun. .. then i m a bit concern with the intrusion of apps in games. I think gaming is a social interaction, in which smartphones and such must not interfere, even if their part is less dramatic than pc back in the 80
Glad to see you guys are still gaming! Please stay safe your self Gamenight!!!
I love this game. That's my evenings viewing sorted!
This was a fantastic video. I just started a group campaign (and board games in general) and this was so easy to follow. Definitely answered a lot of situational questions we had. Props to the excellent editing!
Just like to say I love watching you folk sharing your time, teaching us games and spreading friendship and good tomes! Thank you for your time!
If you are taking suggestions, I would love to watch you play...
Tiny Epic Galaxies with Beyond the Black Expansion
A. Fistful of Meeples
Downforce
And when it comes out,
Tiny Epic Dinosaurs
What a treat! Rodney and chaz in the ep 💖💖
Loved the new Name cards that popped up!
I've been playing the game during the last couple of days and here you are! A glitch in the matrix, indeed 😅
More rodney and chaz pls!! Highly entertaining playthrough guys!
Getting this game to play with my girlfriend. We love LOTR. I am currently into Warhammer 40k, but I want something coop for us to play.
FYI that box spin at 0:51 is epic!
Chaz riffle-shuffling 12 tiny cards shows dedication to the cause. #ConnellClusters
Thank you. #NeverGiveUp
This was super helpful!!! And super fun to watch!!
Awesome video! I just bought the base game and expansion and this video really helped introduce a lot is core rules. Thank you 🙏
Rodney AND Chaz? Mind blown.
I have to confess, I thought they were the same person....
@@monkeyunit4533 they are!!
Do either of them speak at the same time as the other??? Hmmm...
Whaaaat you got Chaz to play with you guys :D he is like my favorite board game content creator
Also glad to see rodney and you guys. :D this will be interesting
Thanks for showing this and thanks for not going into crazy levels of detail with the cards so that there's plenty for players to discover. I'm really looking forward to this year's expansion and seeing Gandalf in action!
Season 8! Gongrats guys! Keep up the great work!
As far as the game I want to like the game more than I actually do being a big LotR fan. After second play it just felt very repetitive.
Ugh i wish you did a series on this game alone it is so fun watching!
You can have more than 1 trinket if you pick up more during an adventure, but during setup for the next adventure, you have to choose just 1.
Great cast, Rodney and Chaz winning combo!
Wow what a cast!
Thanks for the mix of explanation and moving right along playing. I wonder if there could be a close up of the cards added like occasionally the app is enlarged on the video. Sorry I'm sure that just means tons more work.
I had just watched a different video that summarized the good/bad [at "No Pun Included"], but what keeps me from buying the game is that you work hard on objectives and most times are only rewarded with yet another inspiration token. I'm not one to Munchin a game, but it would be nice to get more substantial rewards for your efforts.
bah i haven't played this in a while... been considering doin an epic solo run of a party of 4
i thought watching this would squash the urge to try it but it's only made me want to try and beat it more
You guys have so good playthroughs! Thanks for this!
Good game guys, crushed it
A gibbet is a gallows... the place is spookier than you thought!
Thanks for the covid PSA b4 the video. It really tied things together!
I've only scratched the surface of this game but it feels like the end of each quest is just like what was shown. The board is just filled with enemies and you're taking hits left and right (provoking) and the outlook seems very dire. So the end of the quest definitely drags on as seen here, but you'll win and lose very closely unless you completely ignore your objective.
We are just about to finish the first normal campaign, and it It was only tonight that we first learned that you can use more than one ability on a weapon card if you get enough successes. We always thought you had to choose one of the two or three available abilities for your attack. So I guess we made it this far on hard mode LOL
Awesome! Love this game 💜 Thanks and stay safe! ☀️
Great review, just bought this and seeing as the game has came out with a few expansions would you be willing to re-review this game taking those into consideration?
i liked it, mostly because i watched this while i read the rulebook xD well but thanks, learnd some stuff without having it to read and me and my gf are already a few chapter into the game, i would love to see another episode of this board game and see what you guys think of the mechanics from the other chapters, i wont spoiler but i say this, i didnt expect it from the game xD
Season 8!!! Woo Hoo!!!!!
Question about provoking.
If an orc archer is in play. My hero (Gimli) is 2 spaces away. I move 1 space closer to the archer. Then when I make that 2nd movement in my 1st action into the archers space, do I provoke that archer?
Or does this only happen if I start in the same space or adjacent space of the archer since the archer has range?
Fun game! Would be fun to see a Mansions of madness session as well.
At 2:46:55 Rodney accumulated 5 damage, and his Aragorn card says 5 damage. I thought those numbers next to damage and fear were character limits, meaning 6 or more damage kills him?
EDIT: Yes, I do believe Rodney prematurely performed his last stand with Aragorn at 5 damage. The Rules Reference Guide, 22.2 says: "Each hero has a damage limit and a fear limit presented on their hero card. These limits represent the amount of damage or fear a hero can have before they must perform a last stand."
you guys just convinced me to get this one :)
Awesome! We hope you have as much fun with it as we do. Thanks for the note and for watching.-Lincoln
Excellent and instructive playthrough. I do have a few questions which I hope you can answer. Apologies if you answered them in the vid it was a very long vid and i may have forgotten that you did.
1 - when you started on the map you were next to a greyed out explore token, does that count as having already found that area and so you dont benefit from getting an inspiration token right from the start?
2 - If you get a scout phase but you already have max 4 prepared cards can you put any of those prepared cards back anywhere in your deck and replace them with the scout cards you have just drawn or because you have already maxed out the prepared cards the new scout cards have to automatically go back into your deck?
3 - Just to be clear when negating damage you must draw success cards only in order to negate damage you cant use inspiration tokens to boost your success, or can you ?
4 - Regarding trinkets can you explain how they work?
5 - when performing a Last Stand if you fail to get any successes can you use inspiration to turn it into a success or must you only draw success cards to pass?
6 - If you fail or pass a last stand test it increases the number you need to pass next time, is there any way to reduce that or does it stay with you throughout the entire campaign?
Great vid 👍
Shouldn't Hunt for the Ember Crown and Adventure mode both have been available during this? It looks like they're using a version of the companion app shortly after launch.
When you save and quit a game (and pack it up) that had enemies on the board, how do you know where to put the enemies (and the heros) when you pick up the game again? The in game map doesn't seem to remind you where any of the characters were.
Rodney you are the Man
Any chance you guys would revisit this game with the expansions? Would be very interested as in sure others would
I think you can have more than 1 trinket. right? I thought each hero can start an adventure with 1 trinket, but if more trinkets are found during an adventure a hero can equip it. However, once the adventure ends the heroes must go back down to 1 at the start of the next adventure. Extra trinkets are tracked / equipped by the app. You never lose them I believe.
correct
In case this wasn't explained yet (although I'm sure it was) a gibbet (pronounced JIBBET) is a gallows
There's one mistake in 2:40:48, Legolas had 2 extra cards in the test thanks to Gimli's skill, but you cannot start another player's turn until previous didn't finish. So Gimli should first finish (the card probably says "at the end of your turn you can...") but at that time, Legolas is not around. Then Legolas can move, but he will not get to flip any extra cards.
Example, I if am Legolas and I attack a melee enemy from an adjacent tile with my bow, when the enemy counterattacks it wont hit me correct? but if an ally is in the same node as the enemy do they get hit by the counterattack instead?
amazing !!!!!!
I like this design way more than MoM. I've had way too many MoM games fail because I had like 8 dice to roll and got 1 success, or even none, on a critical role. At least here you can do things to improve your odds on a particular test more often.
I wondered about this game and now I know it's like the canasta of dungeon crawlers
This looks like a terrific game and could even pull in folks who are not otherwise comfortable with role playing board games. I agree with all your positives about using a digital app with this game, the app was fantastic keeping track of points made it tenable. Were there any negatives to using the app? Also if you had lost, how would you have felt?. And in order to go on the chapter 2 did you have to win?
You continue the story but things may change
A little off topic but where do you get those great art prints behind you at the beginning of the episode?
Art prints on the BGG store: boardgamegeekstore.com/collections/game-art
FYI, "gibbet" is pronounced with a soft "g" (like a "j") and it means "gallows."
They need Theoden in their fellowship as he told Saruman that they would not have peace until he was hoisted on a GIBBET for the sport of his own crows.
Will you guys ever play the expansion Shadowed Past?
2:57:50 > Suffer one face-down fear and then flip down... The next Fear was played face-up and caused a last stand for Gimli (!!!)
Looks interesting
I've played a couple of games of Mansions of Madness, which turned out not to be my thing, despite liking a lot of other Arkham games. However, I think it might work better of Lord of the Rings, and this was fun.
Year later, but I'm on the fence to buy MoM and have all other Arkham games. What was it you didn't like? The horror and stamina is kind of handled weird
@@floodkevin4716 I've played it a couple of times in the last year, since we have friends who like it, and it has grown on me. I think it can be a bit clunky (not bothering with monster minis helps), and I'm still not sure how replayable scenarios are, but it's been pretty good.
One does not simply play Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth
Legolas needs to put his range attack to use to not be trying to do all the tests. Two attacks from range and generating kills means he can generate inspiration for tests.
Lincoln always has the coolest shirts.
Nikki: "Can I hand these (inspiration) off to someone?"
Yup, if you play the Bard character. 8)
"Thieves. Thieves and liars" - Inside, outside, which side, you don't know!
Actually anyone could equip that trinket (boots) regardless of how many trinkets already equipped. The equipping rules (one trinket per player) only applies to setup. Trinkets found during the adventure override this.
Greate video. I wish it was easier to read the cards with a closer zoomed in camera so that we could actually see the text. About the comments that it says 60 minutes? I feel like all board games lie about how short a session is. Most board games that are complex like this one says 60 minutes but it ends up being four hours and so on. It’s a marketing thing I think.
I;m getting this game tuesday. Thanks guys. My wallet appreciates it. lol
Thank you guys for playing this game! I like it very much! And you play it really relaxed. It brought a lot of fun!
When did you record this vid? In my App there ist a third level "Adventure". I think, it should be easier than "normal", but for me its not easier than "normal" :D
And, in a german forum I read, that you don´t have to turn all card for a test at once. So if you make the needed success at you first turn, you don´t have to sacrifice the next cards you flip over.
Thanks a lot for this let´s play and stay healthy!
Adventure mode gives 1 free inspiration to each character per turn and doesn't add threat for unexplored tiles so it is considerably easier than normal. I don't like it as the free inspiration is too much and would prefer only the extra time to explore (slower threat gain means more turns before losing).
Alas, when doing a test you have to flip all the number of cards depending on the stat you test. It's like one cannot pick up a magic tome and say to themselves: "Hm... while deciphering this unfamiliar text I'm gonna use only half of my brain." That is, you cannot stop a test halfway, success or not.
1:49:02 How could it be that he moved to the third field? A move action is a move two field...
what's the best lotr board-game?
Can the app be downloaded on my laptop? Asking because of the bigger screen.
Yes, there is an online version you can use. I believe it's on the publisher's website.
Rodney = super awesome dude
Lincoln, where'd you get the shirt and what on earth does it mean?
That is “Dark Side of the Pizza” (IIRC) from TeeFury and it’s a Teenage Mutant Turtles/Pink Floyd mashup. Thanks for the note and for watching. -Lincoln
My impressions 30 minutes in: so far, so Descent 2nd edition app style. Not really a fan of how these modular boards expand so quickly and require just so much table top space, almost engulfing the player areas. It’s definitely a problem with randomly generating modular terrain.
what device are they using for the game?
We were using an iPad for the app integration. -Lincoln
1.) Why does Aragorn has three items in beginning but other characters just two?
its what is on his setup card
@@SirJamesIGamerfuzion Okay, ty!
At 2:57:00 you should have suffered 1 faceDOWN fear than flip the fear card face down.
At 1:40:13 how do you get 7 hits?
Is it because 1 + 2 successes.... you can use 3 of them. You can use all abilities on the card. I think I've been doing that wrong!
Gimli has ring mail which lowers his agility to 1! At around the 1 hour mark when Gimili has to do an agility test to avoid the arrow, the player should have only turned up 1 card in his test. I think the first card he turned was a fate or blank. The second one was a success that should not have counted. Important for players to read all their gear info and their base character abilities before starting game.
Girlfriend and I played the first round last night and she was Gimli (Due to her height, toughness, and ability to drink anyone under the table) . We caught onto that rule prior to our play as she started with the ring mail armor as well. I came back to the video this morning to make sure they played that way too, and to make sure I understood the rule correctly.
I wish I had friends like you guys. At least boardgamers...... sigh
