I don't think it's fair to give this figure a 7/10 on appearance when you consider Darwin used up 80 percent of the company's budget. That was their one big deluxe release so of course everything else has to suffer for it.
What you are describing is poor product management, they are a huge company and can plan, coordinate and control the consistency and quality of their figures if they need to.
I think a diaphragm joint would have really suited Black Panther. I'm pretty sure he's almost as flexible as Spider-Man in some of his comic panels. I also would have liked to see a little color on him, such as the blueish purple and yellow eyes like he had in the Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon. Not sure if he ever looked like that in the comics, but dammit, that's a sick design!
I used a black panel marker on his tabi boots and gloves...makes all the difference. When the silver catches the light it looks like a panther in the dark...I think it's excellent choice for the eyes. Seems like a T'challa headsculpt could've been added.
I really liked this T’Challa release, kinda wish his gloves and boots had a wash tho. Nonetheless, he earns his place near the center of my Heroes shelf!
The Christopher Priest era (black and gold) is my favorite costume because of how menacing it looks. Maybe we'll get some paint on these damn figures once they hit the $35 mark. Hell, at this point I'm surprised Hasbro hasn't introduced a seperate paint kit so we can "customize" our paintless figures. 🙃
That Toybiz Black Panther with the gold trim is the bee's knees! Nice texturing in the outfit, and if you look close, there's subtle metallic purple shading throughout the body. It's aces, man, aces!
I was happy to see your review for this pop up as he came through in the mail for me a week ago and he’s honestly a blast to play with. My first encounter with the Vulcan body and it’s nice enough in hand. If this thing had a matte finish it would have looked so much nicer.
I kinda like how the shiny plastic hits the light though. I don’t think it needed a wash. Butterfly joints on the other hand could definitely be improved. We shouldn’t have to adjust that issue ourselves.
@@cdubbart for sure, something is needed to break up all that plastic. Agree 100% that we shouldn’t have to mod our figures to make them function, strange design choices on Hasbro’s part.
Hasbro gotta hit that 50% increase in profit over the next 3 years some way. Honestly I do like this figure. It feels like a representation of my iconic era of BP around civil war. 05-08, Earth's Mightiest Heroes, etc. But the ropes being painted a beige would have been an easy win. He's got everything I need and sometimes just a well executed base figure will make me happy, GotG Nova is still one of my favorites, but this is a $20 toy max. I'm only getting him and Namor. And I'll wait for Namor to hit the discount rack. Hasbro is gonna hit a death spiral. Fine try and cut costs and raise prices, I'll buy less. Theres like 3 figure this year I have any interest in. If it wasn't for the Pulse Iron Man, I'd have spent 0 dollars on Legends this year.
Fairly said with that first statement, no shade to companies for trying to increase profit….. we should be bashing companies for not keeping up to date with inflation. Inflation jumped atleast 5 times this decade before the minimum wage was changed
My favorite BP design has to be the classic look that we kinda see here and the MCU design's not bad, which I may be biased as my best friend cosplays the MCU Black Panther. Glad to hear this figure's worth the hype, but I'll likely get him online or a specialty shop, with these new packages and price, I can't risk possibly getting a dud at retail. That Vulcan buck's gonna get some mileage and I'm here for it.
My favorite black Panther look would be the one that’s used in the 90s Fantastic Four cartoon, which is what this one is close to. This figure could definitely be better, but for a character like Black Panther this figure gets the job done well so I’m not overly concerned about the lack of paint. I wish he had a unmasked head tho
My favorite ML Black Panther is the Vintage line. I love the proportions and the build on that figure is what I'd imagine an African Hunter/Warrior who's moves mimick a panther would have. The Vulcan/Bucky cap mold I think is a little too much of a westernized build. Like an American Body Builder or Athlete. That being said this figure does look spectacular. But I will be holding off in hopes of a re-release that will include a Tchalla Headsculpt.
we need a rival collectibles ultimate darwin figure lmao. I dont know a lot about different comic designs but i like the solid black design the best. I like this figure but it looks better in the comics when it has the shading instead of just solid plastic.
I swapped the head with the Walmart vibranium Black Panther that came with a normal Panther head, without the pink tribal designs. It’s now my favorite BP figure ever
I’m not a super fan of black panther or any marvel/dc but really liked the Walmart exclusive black panther that came out a few years ago and is selling for like 100 bucks on the secondhand market. So I would say this is my favorite version of black panther. Something about that cape. Wish it came with the spear, but I’m happy. Those white wolf troop builders is lazy/cheap even on the box art the have harnesses and straps but the figure doesn’t.
Forgive my ignorance, what's a "ball peg" that you referenced for the neck joint? I don't collect a lot of action figure so I don't know the terminology lol
Question for ya Anthony..pinless joints, do they have any other benefit besides being more visually appealing? With recent Marvel Legends figures it almost seems like joints are way tighter (which is good) and don't loosen much over time. Just curious if its just me or a benefit of no pins. Also, are you going to bother doing that butterfly mod you mentioned? Certainly tempting but also anxiety inducing after spending $24 on this guy.
I love the idea of adding some blue to it. Just too bad Hasbro is cheap. I wanted to get this figure but nah...I'll wait for a price drop. These aren't selling out like they use to. These days, they're all peg warmers.
Loving your reviews man. Great knowledge of toy production and anatomy and I'm glad to see you will call out the things you don't like with an educated opinion. With that said, why give this Black Panther a 7 out of 10 when you said yourself it's mostly unpainted reuse? The figure does look good overall, but this feels like giving a passing grade to someone who put little effort into copying the majority of their test answers. Still an overall good review
My favorite look is the ToyBiz figure with the long claws and the full cape with the incredible collar. That one still holds up just on the strength of the cape. Here is a video of the shoulder joint articulation fix. The result is quite impressive. czcams.com/video/YQSRuHrr0Ug/video.html
In 2015, I watched three Anthony's Customs videos back to back while playing a drinking game - evertime he said "that's what she said", I did a shot. I came out of the coma this morning. Have I missed anything interesting in the world in the last seven years?
Anthony, I know you don’t collect the MCU stuff so much, but can you maybe review the MCU Namor figure? I’m very curious to hear your thoughts about the proportions and engineering of the articulation on this figure. Thanks!🙂
It's sad that we have waves and budgets and these things aren't being produced mostly out of love... it's just necessity at this point. They have to do the MCU figures so they have to throw in some comic characters to fill out the wave and push the BAF pieces. What little love there *is* coming out of the design team is tamped down and shaved off by cost cutting. Then you can't even get shading on the lines on the gloves, for example. Ugh.
I still need a comic version for Black Panther but I don't think that this will be the one. I'd like the black and gold version, but I don't have much hope in what Hasbro's doing with Legends nowadays. Kinda baffled that if feels like not so long ago I was pretty happy with them because of Iron Man Modular amor and I thought that it was a new era for Legends.
Favorite version of Black Panther is my current one, which doesn't cost close to $40. If they would release a Black Panther with a maskless T'Challa portrait would be sweet. Yet that would require paint, which this product Hasbro decided it didn't need. As you may remember, Hasbro use to make it easier for collectors to upgrade their existing characters because it was an improvement and it didn't cost a load of cash either. This isn't an improvement, it is just a different buck. Much more expensive.
It's a really good figure with the potential to be great. But Hasbro usually goes the cheap route despite raising prices. If you fix the butterfly joints and color in the lines on the boots and gloves, its much better. But we shouldn't have to do that for the price point. It even sorely lacks accessories. At least give us an alternative unmasked headsculpt.
I was ecstatic with this figure for two reasons. Nice sculpt AND no shi**y paints apps like I battled with almost all of the Spider-Man figs recently. I hate just all molded plastic without paint, generally, but it was a relief to open this and not be staring at missing paint, smeared paint, splattered paint, overpaint, etc And it was fun to use a Gundam Marker to add a little darker gray into the sculpted lines for some depth.
Black Panther is a personal favorite of mine. I especially loved his first appearance😂 in the MCU look as well. And he is such a simple design that they could make his figures so good and they just choose to make his figures uninteresting and stupidly flawed! They’ve done like two unique designs on him (barring the MCU figures) with some passable flares in the past few years. They’ve yet to top the original Toybiz version in my opinion. Thanks, as always, Anthony.

As Anthony has mentioned there are ways they could improve things that wouldn't cost more, but that said it'd be really interesting to see: A. What the budget is for your average figure and B. What percent of that is the license fee. ML are over priced, that's for sure, but I wonder how much it'd actually change if you gave the license to a different company. Even with imports, the Marvel ones are noticeably more expensive than non-licensed items in those lines so I wonder how much that factors in.

Honestly I think you went too soft on them. These figures are just not worth anywhere near the money they ask for them. And they keep throwing things out. Less paint, less accessories, less packaging! What about articulation? Black series have already cut off double jointed knees and boot swivels. But people keep buying them.
As i keep saying, it's a given the process are too high and the figures not worth it. I'm rating outside of that so the reviews aren't all pointless videos with me saying it cost too much at the end

Heads too big, hands are oversized , pecks are really stretched down. Nah I still prefer the old bucky cap.
I took the cape off and can’t put it back on. Send help
Do you think the toybiz black panther aged well? Or do you prefer the hasbro offerings?
It has its flaws but it's still the better overall figure imo
@@AnthonysCustoms I agree. Toybiz and civil war are my two favorite panthers in marvel legends.
