- Penukonda means “Big Hill” (in Telugu language). It was the second capital of Vijayanagar Empire after the fall of Hampi. A fort was constructed in the middle of the big hills to provide a natural defense system. Penukonda fort was one of the best defenses of the Vijayanagar Empire. It was also known as defense capital of Vijayanagar Empire. Penukonda is about 145 kms from Bengaluru and a journey of 2 hrs. It is a historical place with a fort surrounding the town. It was very sad to see how badly this fort was maintained and you can only see few broken parts of it. Government should have put more efforts to maintain this place as you go there and can feel for sure the long gone past of the glorious Vijayanagar empire. There is a nice, newly laid road to the top. Good views all around you drive up the road. The journey beats the destination.
Close to Penukonda you can also visit Korean store and restaurant which offers great Korean cuisines.
