MTA New York City Bus : The Retired 2002-2004 Orion VII CNGs

  • These buses were primarily at Jackie Gleason & West Farms Depots. During their later part in their life cycles, some of the 7500s & 7600s ended up at Spring Creek Depot and were retired there after service usage.
What you'll see here is a massive compilation video of Orion VII CNGs in service in The Bronx & Brooklyn, along with them being used on shuttle bus routes as well.
The batch between 7560 to 7684 had a mix of Detroit Diesel Series 50G and Series 50MK-G engines with Allison B400R5 transmissions, 7685 to 7819 Detroit Diesel Series 50MK-G engines and ZF ECOMAT-2 5HP592C transmissions. 7691 & 7746 had Doosan GL11K engines as an experiment to see if it was worth repowering the buses.
I hope you guys enjoyed the video. Subscribe & stay tuned for more!!

Watching this just made me tear a bit. I remember riding these buses in my childhood. These buses are more than just buses. I’ve had a lot of memories on these buses. Some of them I will never forget. As a 2005 Baby, it’s crazy seeing these disappear in 2019. Watching this really does give me a throwback.
RIP the Orion VII OG CNGS..

This was the first MTA Bus I’ve ever seen in my life back in 2009. It was my favorite as it ran on the Bx17. But now that I know they’re gone, I will always remember the 2002-2004 Orion VII CNG’s. So I’m now replacing it with the 2008-2010 Orion VII NG HEV. The 2002-2004 Orion VII CNG’s will always be in my heart. They will remain there for the rest of my life. 😀😓

Despite not riding them, I do have to admit, when I was little, I used to be afraid of those buses. But now that I was a bit more older, I grew out of being scared, and I started to love these buses. The Series 50G engine was the one that made these buses roar, and will always be the best CNG engine. Also 7691 and 7746 were the first units to be tested for repowering. The first repowering was with the Cummins Westport ISL-G engine, and were also refitted with Allison B400R6 transmissions, to see if this could be a sucess. Then later on, they were repowered again, but this time with the Doosan GL11K engines. Surprisingly, I only caught 7746, and it was the Doosan powered one, before it was retired. Basically, I think the Repowering proposal didn't seem to work, since that it may cost the MTA money for the repowering, plus they should better off just repower one bus with the ISL-G, and the other one with the Doosan engine, to compare which engine is best. However, that is just my opinion.

Retired already? Dam the GMC RTS's seemed to have lasted MUCH longer than these. These appear to be in great shape to go to mothballs. What I fondly remember about these is the torque! I believe there was an issue with the excessive torque and passengers falling as a result upon their debut. Correct me if Im wrong but I believe it was THIS model right here.

CNG tanks have an expiration date. When the tanks expire, so do the buses. They could re-tank the fleet with new tanks, but getting new buses would be cheaper in the long run.

I remember back in 2017, those had literally come from Jackie Gleason during that year.... only to be gone by early 2018. I only got 3 videos of them (I wasn't into YouTubing at the time, and I was in High School). I should've fanned them looking back, because I didn't realize they were retiring, until it was too late).
