It's the musical that horrified millions, well, thousands...maybe. This box office bomb will forever live in infamy but Nostalgia Critic and Cinema Snob ask is that necessarily a bad thing?

Cats is a 2019 musical fantasy film based on the 1981 Tony Award-winning stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which in turn was based on the poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939) by T. S. Eliot. The film is directed by Tom Hooper, in his second feature musical following Les Misérables (2012), from a screenplay by Lee Hall and Hooper. The film features an ensemble cast, including James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Francesca Hayward.

Not so fun fact: Andrew Lloyd Webber was so traumatized by this movie he adopted a support dog. What’s more when pressed by an airline as to wether or not he actually needed the dog, he basically replied “watch the Cats movie” to which the airline did and said “okay go ahead bring him no doctors note necessary”.

She had recorded on tape the PBS showing of Cats some years before and it was our favorite movie! It is still a favorite of mine. The old tape is long gone, but the new movie captured the magic and awe that inspired us, and me in particular, all those years ago. Was it a cinematic masterpiece? In the musical, what brought her back in was the newcomer taking her hand, something the other cats refused to do because she had been banished. By touching her, it means she's accepted back in. Any cat could have done it, but most were afraid of straying from the "accepted conduct" (pun not intended).

Eliot wrote about cats for his daughter. When his daughter was young, she would call cats "Jellicle Cats" and dogs "Pollicle Dogs", as toddler would mispronounce certain things or have difficulty with pronouncing words in general resulting in such baby talk. So all cats that he wrote about were her Jellicle cats and all dogs were her Pollicle dogs. In a letter to an associate, Eliot explained an idea he had for the last poem of his book (the poem was never written. The idea only existed in this letter, and was taken by Andrew Lloyd Webber and added to the musical), where all the cats and dogs would ride balloons up up up, to the Heaviside Layer.

Anyone would've been better than Tom Hooper. His choices completely bastardized the original score by letting the ACTORS lead the orchestra instead of the two working in tandem. He also completely misunderstood the importance of Victoria and the importance of touch to the jellical cats by not only having Victoria as the main character when Cats really didn't have one and by having Grizzabella recoil from being touched by Victoria despite the fact that all she wants is to be a jellical cat again (that's the whole point of her final belt in Memory) and by having Victoria TOUCH HER TO HELP HER STAND RIGHT BEFORE SHE BELTS OUT THAT FINAL PART OF MEMORY!!! This whole thing legitimately makes me angry
