The biggest problem with the movie, besides it being terrible, is they tried playing it straight at all. It's fucking Looney Tunes. Who's going to think Bugs Bunny will actually die or think LeBron James can act as a main character? The reason the first movie worked, and still gets laughs today, is cause it's a joke. Even the scenario behind the drama is a joke and that's what makes it great. It knows not to take itself too seriously.

And Diana, feeling sympathy for Lola, whispers to the other judges who nod in satisfaction. And then Diana approaches a saddened Lola saying that while Lola _won't_ be an Amazon, she pulled some strings to get a _special royal_ job _just for her_ to use her wonderful, amusing gifts. To which Lola, with a _huge_ smile and large _puppy-dog eyes and a twitching nose_ says _"Really?_ And then it cuts to Lola dressed as a _court jester_ (maybe Harley Quinn's _Batman The Animated Series_ costume for a fun little Easter egg), _totally dead-inside_ using her "looniness" to perform comedy bits for the Amazons. Then, Lola pulls out an anvil and throws it in the air just standing under it and then it squashes her. Lola then pulls herself out _totally flattened_ with the Amazons laughing and then she "puffs" back and yells "WWHHHHHYYYY!!!!!!" like she was trying to end it all. Then it cuts to LeBron looking on in mild fear and Bugs watching smugly. Lola then looks to them, rips off the jester outfit and storms onto the spaceship.

Would honestly be a lot better than what they did with her. Honestly in general I can kind of agree with the NC that her appearance here is the "most 2021" way to handle her, since it really did just make her the "token female" of this time period instead of an actual character, kind of like the original did, (though personally I find the original version more entertaining than this one). It's really weird that they did so though, since her other portrayals elsewhere have her with her own personality and traits that can actually be entertaining.

Also maybe this is just me and maybe it's kind of a nitpick, but I kind of resent what media does with women in media of how they're trying to "desexualize" female characters. Examples include removing Ms. Bellum and removing Ms. Keane's breasts in the _PowerPuff Girls_ 2016 reboot. It's like they're saying "conventionally" attractive women can't be good role models and that girls and women should be ashamed of themselves if they have naturally curvaceous bodies. This _isn't_ celebrating all body types. This is just _trading in one_ body preference for _another_ body preference. It's hypocritical as hell.

They start from a place of good intentions such as giving female characters more developed roles than being sex icons, or giving more representation to different things. The end product, however, often ends up trading one extreme for another and in some ways is arguably worse than the original because they portray the thing they're trying to change as "wholly wrong", when in reality most people fall into a range between the two.
For example, women are allowed to be a bit sexual or have wants and needs beyond just being "strong and independent" in real life, and in many cases people are much better off if they rely on others at least some, rather than striving to be "perfect" and not need any help. There's been countless shows and movies that even try to drive that point home with well developed characters, but for some reason so many these days are moving away from that, or trying too hard to show that "women don't need to rely on anyone" as an attempt at being progressive, resulting in boring characters that are unrelaistic.

      @carsfan1995 Před 2 lety +1

What do you mean on purpose?
What was Michael Jordan’s motivation to help? And no, “being nice” isn’t good enough. If that’s not good enough for modern female characters, it ain’t good enough for a 90s flick that people like do to their nostalgia.
LeBron didn’t want to have the Looney Tunes as his team. Bugs was just using LeBron’s situation to get his friends back and when they were running out of time Lebron had to settle for them. It makes sense for Bugs’ original characterization of being a trickster and clever rabbit. He could’ve just used Marvin’s ship to get them by himself, however, because they all left willingly the first time around he needed a reason for all of them to get back together. LeBron’s situation gave them that reason get together. Additionally, having these funny, silly characters as a team helps Lebron’s character arc of having to not force his own way of doing things onto them. The toons had their special way of playing/contributing to basketball (except Porky which is why they had him rap because they didn’t know what to make his Looney power). Trying to play in Lebron’s way was more of detriment to them and actually help him realize what he was doing wrong with his kid. When he let the Looney Toons play in their style and with understanding the video games they were able to play better and have a good time doing so. Seeing his dad’s change of play style is why his son switched sides because he sees his dad being more accommodating to how others play.
Where’s that progression with Michael? Like basic writing. Michael Jordan had no reason to help the Toons. He was just kidnapped by then and… never bothered leaving. It’s not like he had a previously established connection with them other than commercials that the movie was inspired by. He had no stakes in helping the Toons until the theme park owner threatened to take him as an attraction too. He takes the bet… even though he had no motivation that would reason why he would other than so he has something at stake.
I’m sorry but in terms of story progress and character development, Space Jam 2 did it better.
I was born in 1995. Space Jam was one of the few live action movies I watched as kid. I do have some nostalgic feelings for it. However when I watched it on HBOMAX I became more aware of the flaws it had and made me realized what I had already suspected with liking A New Legacy. I’m not going to pretend that their aren’t cringey or dumb stuff in the new film, but to ignore the original as this sacred cattle because of it being part of your childhood or nostalgia…
Honestly it’s kind exciting to see what 2010s media becomes nostalgic for the teens/adults of the 2020s and 2030s. What were the favorite shows and movies those kids watched in the 2010s era.

Which is strange because movie scenes aren't usually filmed in order, but the early scenes legitimately felt like they WERE filmed before the rest of the film was, especially all of the voice acting he does in this, so his acting seems to get more... not better, but just more acceptable.

    2. The villians shouldnt have been just random nba stars with super powers. The Mean Team is iconic because of how goofy they were. The game wouldve been improved if the bad guy team was either all Warner villians, or just a clone army of Don Cheadle in different costumes.

As for The Nerdlucks all they did was use a greenscreen without making them CGI while the real Nerdlucks are just chilling at Titan Tower after they kicked out the Toddler Titans! Creator Backlash: An artist for the movie, Dave Alvarez (who also draws many Looney Tunes comic books currently), did plenty of work on the movie's character designs and backgrounds. He went uncredited in the movie, which was a deeply upsetting experience for him and his family. He has since been critical and disdainful of the movie. An online campaign supporting him began when the story was picked up by the media.
On July 30, 2021, the film finally credited most of the artists and collaborators on Twitter. This still left a bitter taste on fans’ mouths, who continue to clamor for them to be added to the actual movie credits for the home release.
Joe Pytka, the director for the first Space Jam, ripped into the new one, finding that LeBron's story lacked the Reality Subtext that Michael Jordan's did, felt the various celebrities were unmemorable compared to the original's cameos (i.e. Bill Murray), thought Bugs Bunny was watered down, and admitted that he found it painful to watch through in over five sittings just to finish it.
Certainly downplayed, but Gabriel Iglesias was disappointed to learn he was given the role of Speedy as Stunt Casting and not on the strength of the impression he’s been doing for years.

This felt more like a commercial for me than the original did. I always have a blast when I watch the first movie, but with this one, not so much. I watched these movies back to back, and I didn't find myself to be as invested in Space Jam 2. I think I was more interested in finding what characters were in the background than I was in the overall plot. I was also hoping to see more Bugs/Lola interactions, and see how they'd make Lola more interesting. She's such a blank slate in this movie, and I really hate that she barely even acknowledged Bugs. While I intend to watch more of the first movie, I don't think I'll be tuning into the second one again.
