Featuring the largest cannon ever intended for an anti-tank role and an equally massive turret, the FV4005 is an oddity. Today we look at the origin of this design and what's left of it today.

To be fair, they were putting a 183-mm cannon, which would have fit well on a FRIGATE, on a Centurion chassis. Considering how far back this contraption could shoot from, being eleven feet tall isn't that big an issue. And who sez the rounds had to HIT their target! What I like the most about IS-3 debuting on Victory Parade in Berlin is that T-44 wasn't shown. And later on, reworked, upgunned and uparmored it turned into T-54 aka main force behind soviet ground forces armored fist. So it ended up being an unintentional misdirection on soviet part. Otherwise Allies/NATO might have instead pursued the upgunned medium tank projects that would see medium tanks comparable to T-54 being the main focus of development efforts. Uparmored Centurion with 32-pounder and Caernavorn drive train? M26E1 with streamlined hull front, long 90mm and T32 drive train? Basically do what soviets did to T-44 to get T-54 instead of waiting for M48.

Fun fact the tank itself was designed by the auster aircraft company and the turret itself was made by Chubbs ( A safemaker from Wolverhampton)
from what ive heard over the years is that the FV005 was meant as a supporting tank firing over the chieftains, incase of a soviet invasion which was a real concern back then
