I do like that the Trainer classes makes the world of Pokemon feel more real. They're not just the world conquering gangs or adventurers trying to save the world. They're just regular people, of all ages and social demographics.
They add that comfort spice that makes you want to live in that world. Get up for your 9 to 5 alongside your faithful Pokemon and have a fun sportsmanship battle during your commute.
Pokémons variety is what makes it so enjoyable. If youre a chill normal guy, an artist, a hiker, archeologist, whatever; there are pokemon you'd probably like and would be your life-long companions
Stuff like this is why I love Pokémon so much. Out of almosy fantasy world, I'd pick Pokémon as the one I'd live in just because of this. You dont have to be the 'main character' who goes out stopping evil teams and world ending catastrophes. You can just be a normal person who lives a regular life with a normal job and still enjoys pokemon battles.
I do think it's kinda silly that pretty much anyone hanging out in the overworld will start a Pokemon battle with anyone they see.
@@timothymcleani mean, i'd be eager to see how strong my rock homunculus would do against some rando's fire bird
"during your commute" yeah I'd love to sit on a metro and see two pokemon trainers having their pokemons throw giant boulders, spewing fire or causing giant waves xD
Best case scenario one of them has a jigglypuff that puts everyone to sleep
@@LucasTheOnion That's why they created the Battle Subway in Black and White XD
That aspect of “normalcy” is I think precisely why Pokémon has been so enduring. Especially in the anime (show and movies) we see just as much of Pokémon living alongside humans in everyday life from being pets to even working with humans as often if not as much as we see them battling. Even though battling Pokémon has and always will be the main focus of the Pokémon games, there is so much more to all the Pokémon than just that.
Yeah people have been wanting to doors things outside of battles like we love brushing and poking our Mon to see their reactions. Pokemon is doing cooking more nowadays which is fun also. Contents were a thing and I wish there was a way to do some ranger work or maybe seeing what a breeder does in the pokemon world
Recently in Horizons. Out of all the ways Kingambit could be introduced into the series as a wild Pokemon antagonist, a bully's ace or even Geeta's, how does he appear? As a helper in a restaurant which I find comical but adorable at the same time.
As someone who likes Digimon more than Pokémon, I fully agree. Pokémon aren’t some otherworldly or super mysterious collection of creatures. They are just…there. They are the animals of the world. By seeing them alongside humans in perfectly normal situations helps solidify that idea and helps make the world feel more immersive as no matter what your life is like, you can imagine going through it with a Pokémon.
You work on a farm? Here’s a Psyduck, Sandshrew and Machop to help tend the field with.
You work in an office? Here’s an Obstagoon that helps you out with carrying paperwork or brings snacks to the break room.
Airline? Luxray is helping out.
School? Gible
I can keep going, but the point is that you are right. Part of the reason why Pokémon is so amazing is that they are able to make the titular creatures feel like they belong.
As I said, I prefer Digimon, but it just doesn’t have that normalcy to it. Regardless of whether it takes place in the human world or the digital world, someone is almost constantly having a fish out of water moment. There’s little slice of life because the whole reason why everyone is together in the first place is because something is seriously wrong and when there is, it is still met with some characters not seeing it as normal.
Meanwhile Pokémon has had a lot of fun episodes where the entire plot is basically helping a Pokémon and their trainer with their jobs or just enjoying a fun day doing stuff that people already do, but with Pokémon.
@@MasterArchfiend I only ever played cybersleuth and hackers memory but the idea of having digimon help with hacking or detective work and them messing with things in real life was pretty similar i loved the little stories of the two worlds interacting in that way

The Lass is rather simple, but quite effective in being memorable, I'd say

The instance where being basic is a good, actually
Honestly I'd say having basic designs isn't bad if you do it with intentionality. It can help ground your world and make the special designs stand out more.
You can't have important characters stand out from the ordinary crowd if there is no ordinary crowd.
"People, Pokémon... There's no need to overcomplicate things. …When all's said and done, simplicity is strongest."
-Larry, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet
You got that right. Also looking back at character designs fron gen 8 back it really hits ya with how absolutely grotesque Sarlet and Violet designs are
What’s crazy is that to this day there hasn’t been a pair of Pokemon trainers that you fight (unless you count past game battle frontier stuff) where you have a Youngster/Lass Pair. Which definitely fits what you described.
The closest we have is the athletic siblings from sun and moon who are two male and female youth athletes. AKA literally just youngsters and lasses with sports equipment same model and everything
@@appelofdoom8211There's also a duo of lass-like characters called Sr and Jr in the Gen3 games
@@doubl2480The age gap between them seems pretty small, though, around one to two years IMO.
Y'know, I never really thought about that until reading this comment, and now that I actually am thinking about it, yeah, that seems like one of the most obvious multi-battle pairings that should've been done in at least one game
That said, I am also almost Mandela Effect-ing myself into thinking that _surely_ Emerald had at least one instance of a Lass and Youngster set up so you could get them both to spot you simultaneously and have them in a multi-battle [still one of the coolest things in the series btw, wish that had become more of a mainstay after Emerald], but I feel like there unfortunately wasn't any situation like that
@@WhimsicottFanaticthe think the closest there was in Emerald was the camper/picnicker. But even then they’re the same age
“They’re not meant to be striking or beautiful.” Meanwhile, I’m losing my mind at how consistently cute the lasses are.

They're all so cute
Pokemon's character designs are just that good. Prob one of my fav aspect of the games
Thank gog I'm not the only one lol
They are so cute ^ ^
Really sad they didn’t appear in Scarlet and Violet though the theme is school afterall
I feel like the Lass would fit perfectly as a protagonist in a slice-of-life anime within the Pokémon universe and I love that.
I always kinda thought of the Lass and Youngster as siblings too. Like the Lass taking her little brother out in the field to catch Pokémon because her mother told her to go with the Youngster. She wasn't into it at first because Pokémon Training is for nerds, but she gets into it and now enjoys going out with her brother.
I once called someone Lass because I'm Scottish and then someone genuinely thought I was comparing them to the Lasses from Pokémon.
Edit: Since someone was asking, I called a young girl "lass" when I was around 16 and a pal of mine who moved here from Lithuania got confused and thought I was referencing the lass from Pokémon, we were both heavy into games, especially Pokémon and Nintendo games, when we were young. Was a bit odd though because he had lived in Scotland for about 5 years at that point so I was quite surprised he had never heard the word lass. He knew that young boys would get called lad or laddy, but he'd never heard of lass or lassy before.
Honestly this is funny.
I think the youths (I say as someone still under 30 myself lol) don't use "lass" and "lad" anymore unless they're very Scottish, Irish or British
I can't believe pokemon invented girls
Were they flattered, offended or neutral?

I like that the Lass looks like she could grow up to being a beauty or ace trainer in most games. The japanese name for the class is literally just "mini skirt" in comparison to the youngsters name of "shorts"
Hi! I like mini skirts! They're comfy and easy to wear!

the lasses are cuuute. CUUUTE!!!
Apparently the Lasses do become Beauties when they get older.
I can see how that happens 👀
Another interesting thing about them is that while they have that sort of “early route” thing that youngsters do, there is a general emphasis that they want to have cute Pokémon, which a lot of early Pokémon usually ares before they start evolving.
Based on the fact we’re going in a generalized “route order” I’m thinking next will be Bug Catchers.
The lass is called 'brat' in german, haha
For a second I thought you were going to rhyme class with lass and make it some sort of poem 😂

Trainers like the lasses are perfect for keeping the feeling of grounded reality in a world full of elemental fictional creatures, gangs running about causing trouble, gym leaders ready for you to challenge, an elite group of the regions strongest trainers ready to be conquered, and legendary beasts being summoned. Having someone who's just your average person clearly going about their day truly does make the world feel normal in the right way.
He includes the Pokémon Centre Lady as one of the ordinary-looking characters but she'll always be prettier than the flashy characters to me
Ordinary as in "they seem like ordinary people in the world. " how they appeal to the person will be based on preference. If you prefer the "girl next door" over the "fashion city girl"then types like the lasses will be prettier than, at say, the beauties.
Hello, Brock
Brock pls.
As pretty as your ordinary fast food cashier, I'd figure.
@nessesaryschoolthing is it really Brock to choose one type over another? I always thought he was Joy at Tier 1 then Tier 2 is everything labeled "female"
The lass come off as a friend you want to sit with you at the lunch table during school
A very good analysis as always. I appreciate pokemon having classes that are just normal people who happen to have pokemon because that's the world they live in.
The lass trainer class has an interesting soft spot for me. Back when I first played Black, there was a Lass that could show up in front of the Nimbasa city ferris wheel, and if you beat her, you got to ride the ferris wheel with her.
The dialogue in that interaction made my kid self have a bit of a crush on her cause I thought the interaction was cute. Even now I think the interaction is cute and it was one of my fondest memories from my original Black run.
As a kid i always had kind of a crush on the Lass characters every time i played a new Pokemon game
Fun fact! In Japanese the Lass class is simply called "skirt" which is why in the Japanese anime opening there's the joke about looking in the lass's skirt for Pokemon ("skatto no naka," the line in question, means "in a skirt" but because it's also the name for the lass class it also means "in [that] lass")
Aren't youngsters also called shorts? I wonder if there's (or will be) also pants or hat trainer classes as well.
The lass even made an appearance in the first anime opening
That lass is somewhat important to the Japanese lyrics. If you know, you know...
@@TheMegaMarshtomp I know, and I wish I didn't.

@@TheMegaMarshtompI don’t know please explain
@@YeetZmeNIn Japan the Lass is instead called "miniskirt". And in the Japanese lyrics they're talking about how determined to find pokemon in every nook and cranny
"Even if in fire, in water, in grass, in forests In ground, in clouds, in that girl's skirt (Eek!)" Its a comedic lil line, and also the reason why Pikachu goes underneath her in the animation.
i love the lasses, they just tend to have this aura of someone who would be a great friend in school, the kind that helps the shy kids talk to the professors when they need something
There isn't a single bad Lass design in the series
Shoutout to the HGSS Lass, who's (one of) the only Lass with shorter hair.

As a kid, they reminded me of the other girls who were slightly older than me and were helping in tutoring. They give the vibe of the mentoring peers that had good advice and a friendly attitude.
Just a humble, salt-of-the-earth everygirl!
The Lass has a good role in games as a transition between the early and the mid game, as you tend to see them with common Pokemon around the roads between towns. They can be low level or mid level, but drop off when you get to the mountainous areas where the Ace Trainers and Hikers dominate. A very grounded, relatable class and vital to the Trainer ecosystem.
Lass Natalie on Route 203 will always be remembered since it was the first time I saw my name in a video game hehe
In the 90s and early 00s the Lass trainer class was my favorite. As a girl gamer it was nice to see other girls in the universe catching and battling. They showed up early too and quickly established that the franchise wasn't only for boys.
On the topic of NPCs like Youngsters and Lasses, I’ve always enjoyed when we get to see what the world of Pokemon is like outside of the battling and catch ‘em all aspects that the games prioritize.
Seeing how people’s daily lives are altered is especially cool. Pokemon acts both as what’s effectively both a worldwide sport and a magic system really allows for the world building to take off.
Everything from world religions, to ancient history and development, to your taxi service and power grid are all run off of these insane creatures that you can tame and KEEP AS A PET.
Girl next door
that you want to..
I like the lass trainers because they are very comforting…
And while Lasses have technically been removed in SV it makes sense, Female students take their place...
SV is a weird case because the majority of trainer classes have been replaced with Students of every age to be consistent with the entire student body taking simultaneous road trips. You get to see all your classmates on their journey instead (even if they mostly stay in one place).
I like the implication that the Youngsters and Lasses and other NPCs are just chilling with their Pokemon, and the player characters are the absolute weirdos out in the world trapping ancient god-monsters for legal dogfighting tournaments
In Pokemon Black 2, I always pick lass and the sassy nature on my trainer card because I think it's funny to be a sassy lass.
They also serve as a class that isn't focused on battling. The Youngster's "scrappy" nature often makes them feel like someone who thinks they're the PC, like they're secretly a badass and are gonna be the very best. The Lass often doesn't have that, and instead talks about their Pokemon like pets, with a "I like this one 'cause it's cute" line or the like. Thus they help to build the Pokemon world as something that exist outside of battles.
“not meant to be striking or beautiful”
They say, with a 10/10 qt up on screen
I hate how they are called in the German version of Pokemon. "Göre" is a word that I would use for a bratty, annoying child, but it's what they chose to name the Lass trainer class :/
Would make more sense for the youngster class (unless it's a female only term or something) because the lasses generally some pretty amicable in most sprites
@@appelofdoom8211it is a mostly female only word.
It is also not very commonly used anymore, but the German translation uses it basically out of tradition now. "Bengel" or "Rotzlöffel" would be male equivalents (that aren't common anymore either).
Youngster is "teenager" in German btw...
It's a lil uncommon to be used for male kids. Yay misogyny. The term definitely was the reason I found them way more annoying than the youngsters. Made me read all their lines in a bitchy tone.
I'm reclaiming it.. brat summer but german: Görensommer :-)

My childrenhood game crush was the Lass Trainer.
If the Youngster is the counterpart of the Lass, I guess they could be considered the Lad
Remember when the Lass used to be an actual lass? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Basically me playing Omega Ruby when I was younger. I didn’t know about strategies or how to build a good team. I just named my Mudkip, Mudkid because I thought it was funny and went on my merry way.
And I'm quiet into ordinary 👌

I have beef with the ORAS lasses because one stalled me out with a Shroomish before Rustboro.
“Normalcy” is love a slice of life pokemon show
In Japanese, the Lass class is called something like "Miniskirt Girl" to go with youngers being called "Shorts boys"! ^_^ (Funny enough, in early gens the name was too long and got shortened to just "Miniskirt")
I think lasses are one of the most enduring aspects. I think it is a little interesting that it feels like a counterpart of the youngster is more likely to be replacable by other young classes that have male and female counterparts. But that doesn't really happen for the lasses.
Also, thr addition of the being two lasses.
Do the bikers, rough necks, and delinquents next please
I do like the theory that there's a bit of a stigma against Ace Trainers (player character included). Pokemon battles are more of a way to stimulate and socialize with Pokemon, and two individuals battling each other is more of a fun pass time between each other. Trainers, on the other hand, fully dedicate themselves to developing Pokemon skills and evolving them quicker than they naturally would. Meaning that they could be seen as the unbearable overachievers who only care about winning battles.

really cool breakdown, would love to see more. Trainer classes have always been some of my favorite aspects of any pokemon game and I am always excited to see the new trainer classes
The lass is one of the most breedable type of Pokemon npc. They aren't extremely hot, but their normality is what makes them so versatile.
yup
Lords will see you marry a comely lass and say "he has secured no alliances"
I can appreciate a character design that can be feminine without being pandering. I like that.
I think the different trainer classes really makes the world of Pokémon believable. People of all walks of life enjoying it, some casually, others for a living, others like fishermen have Pokémon helping them earn their living- it really makes it believable
Pretty much every boy had a crush one one of the trainer types, the Ace Trainer girls always looked so cool to young me.

Ah yes, the Miniskirt trainer class.
The lass is the type of girl you marry fellas.
I kinda like how the first actual non rival trainer you fight in gen 5 is a Lass, as far as I know it's the only generation to do so

“ DUNUNU! DUNUNU! Doodoodoodoo doot doot doot “
That’s my best interpretation of the tune haha 😅 I heard it in my head as soon as I read this
I completely agree with everything you said. It's unspoken, but I like how Gamefreak gave the Lasses a chest over the years. We grew up along with them and it shows.
Breakfast all day, two tablets, one a day, only until 11am
The youngster class is named “shorts” while the lass is named “miniskirt” further strengthening the correlation between the two class types.
I like these Trainer class critiques you are doing! The RNY Lass artwork always stands out to me because we've gone through so many evolutions of their design that it feels almost like a drawing some manga artist did back in the 80s lol
I don’t like when the lass has to be in a school uniform but the Youngster gets to be casual
Well said, it's funny how such little things that actually dont matter for gameplay add such a level of genuineness to the world
I love the Lass designs. Love how they're ordinary trainers like us. And I enjoyed how some look like school girls. As if they are still in their studies.
Reminder: the trainer class is called Miniskirt in Japan.
They were one of my favorite trainer classes growing up because I always loved their clothes
I like the alolan lasses skin tone
Me too
The one you showednoff the most was a character in a pokémon nuzlocke animation series, as a major antagonist.
One of them is the Skirt-Girl in the original Pokemon anime' intro 😂
The vibes of the lass class is kinda like those older girls next door that kids would have crushes on.
The Lass was always meant to be a counterpart to the Youngster (who were called "Lads" in Stadium at one point).
In Japanese, the Youngsters are the "Shorts Youngsters" (短パン小僧) class, while the Lasses are the "Miniskirts" (ミニスカート)
Surprisingly, there are no Lass trainers in SV? I'm guessing this is because since the Lass designs are school uniforms, it would clash with the Uva/Naranja ones (which don't have skirts). So they were superseded by the female Student trainers in those games
I’d be an Acetrainer in Pokémon . The Gen 1 Channeler trainers have the creepiest lines ever! 😱
FRLG Lass was my first game and it still has my favorite Lass design.
In the original japanese, they're called "miniskirts"
The trainers really did kinda make the world feel more alive, and Im sad they became optional in SV
Eh, I dunno I think they're pretty beautiful
For one thing their hair stays perfect without any stray strands no matter what
Skirts are fun and easy to wear
The Lass being obviously around the player characters' age gives a subtle sense of progression in the early game - you see less and less of them as you become better than your average trainer.
What I think about the "age difference" you reference is that typically in that part of life girls tend to grow quickly then boys. I remember that one girl from my class the first year was shorter than me, the next year was really, really taller than me.
So even if I don't know the design process of creating the Lass trainer, maybe this could be the reason because they look more "mature" than their counterparts.
