Suggestion for future videos: Start the episode by showing all the tools and supplies that are absolutely required, and then what can be substituted, or what could be helpful but not essential. I'm thinking like a cook who wants to have all my ingredients and equipment laid out before I begin prepping and cooking.

I think it's great Tom, that you are taking the time to show people how to do "handyman" projects around the house. I also love how you are teaching your kids as well. Our son (and daughter a little too) learned from his dad and it sure can save you lots of money over the years. I've always felt blessed to have a husband who can take care of things around the house. The building industry was our livelihood all the years before retiring. In our latest home, he has upgraded both baths and laid tile floors in the baths, laundry and kitchen. He has done the tile backsplash in our upgraded kitchen and doing hard wire under cabinet lights now. Keep up the good work!!! He changed out all the plugs and switches too.

A few years ago my husband taught me how to do this as he had the beginnings of Parkinson and could not control his shaking. I can now change any electrical outlets and light outlets in our house. This is so important for EVERYONE to know how to do. I converted our entire home to rocker switches and smart switches.

  • @ElsaInCa

Thank you for this! I realize that for a lot of people, this is as basic as it gets, but for some of us, it’s totally unknown and mysterious!
My only suggestion would be not to leave anything out - in doing the switch, you explained it, but because of camera positioning you didn’t show it. Even though you showed the other outlet, and you explained the switch outlet, we didn’t get to SEE it. (See what I mean about getting really basic?) For a raw beginner like me, it would really help to see you do it again, because it was slightly different from the first.
Creating a how-to compilation was a great idea! Your channel will be a good resource for us; instead of having to search CZcams we can go straight to you!
    🙂👍🏼
    Adding one more thing:
Looking forward to how to add a GFI switch, because I don’t have one in my entire house!😳

      @Taleri Před rokem +1

Agreed. The replacement switch has the wire attachment screws on the other side, ( 11:46 ) so even though he said "black on top, white on bottom" and we can *guess* that it doesn't matter that the screws were on the opposite side, it would have been helpful to see it as its was ever so slightly more complicated than the outlet.

Totally agree this is a simple job, but Another tip is to take a picture of the wires positioning with your phone before unscrewing them. Love this series and love your channel! I am NOT an electrician but have done a lot of these and have read a lot of information about the best and right ways to do it. I have read that the push-in wiring can come loose and cause issues, so I tend to stay away from that. Great point about which way to bend the wiring around the screws though! That's a common mistake and one that I definitely made when I first started out (till the guy I was learning from corrected me)! Also, using a #2 square drive bit makes working with the new outlet a lot easier, as you can very securely drive the screw on the side of the outlet and the one to secure the outlet to the box with one bit. :)
Also, I would love to see how you inspect used cars to know what you're getting into. Not looking to be flip cars-just for whenever we're shopping for the next family hauler!

Thanks so much Tom! I had a couple ideas for your channel from my own experienc; my son replaced a kitchen light and the wiring was a mess! (1958 fixer upper). He change the wiring and added some covers over the loose wires. Not sure what happened, but replacing the light and wiring, fixed my fridge as it started working perfectly again! Before, the top freezer kept filling up with a thick layer of ice every month. He also replaced the thermostat with an updated one! After a "free service tune up" Ended up with AC issues so guys rewired my AC in the house... not sure what that was about, but the AC kept tripping the breaker on the electric panel outside every time it rained. This company installed new AC when I purchased the house as it had none. One time the AC didn't shut off and water was squishing out of my floor from condensation! Of course, it warped the flooring I had installed a couple years ago. Finally, serveral months later, an electrician replaced (and buried in ground) a cable from my electrical panel to the AC condenser. Finally Fixed!! ... after a year of service calls for AC not staying on during a rainstorm and many $$$$ dollars later. It was the last AC guy that told me to call the electrician and get a new cable. None of the others knew that was the issue! I wonder how many others have had similar experiences of the same problem not getting fixed. I love your channel and I'm always looking forward to your imput and jokes along the way!! Thanks again Tom!! Truly appreciated!!

    Hi Tom,
My wife has been a subscriber for a while and we have watched both your channel as well as Dawn's and love them both.
This was a great video to show how ready it is to change an outlet. However, I did want to point out a few things. You did replace a 20 amp outlet with a 15 amp. The holes you mentioned in the back are not near as safe as the screws - the holes have much less contact area with the wires. The holes are also sized and if your wire is a size 12 gauge, they won't fit in the holes of a 15 amp outlet. It's best to use the screws.
I would strongly recommend getting/using a proximity voltage tester instead of the outlet tester. You can also use them to test any wire, switch, or outlet without actually touching any wires. They run approximately $20..
(P.S. I am not a licensed electrician, just a handyman.) Keep up the great videos!

Tom mentioned that this was only a demonstration, because after the backsplash was installed, he would need a GFCI outlet within 6 feet of water. So the 15/20amp switch wasn’t what he was aiming for. But thanks for pointing it out. I hadn’t realized outlets could be rated differently.😊

Maybe this should be the Justin Case series?! I would love an instructional video on towing and the different things you need to do and/or consider when towing various things and how to track down issues with wiring, please!

This was very informative. I’d love it if you’d do a video on installing LVP flooring like you and Dawn have.

This was very helpful, I will say as someone who once killed all the power - and then discovered it was a complicated switch and had to call an electrician - you want to try to flip only the switch you need so you still have power to your house if something doesn't go to plan.

Sue Wolfe- I love the idea of these videos, Tom. I'm looking forward to your new series and how you explain things! Does your building code require a gfci within a certain distance from the water source?
