Hey Alone, I'm a "recovering auto technician", having done it for 15 years, though I am a bit rusty, but here's my initial thoughts. What you're seeing with a flashing check engine light is what is called a "catalyst damaging misfire", which means that it is significant enough to cause damage to your catalytic converters if allowed to continue for too long. That is why the PCM immediately reduces power output when it is occurring. When the light is not flashing, it could mean that the problem is still there, but it is not as severe. The light will remain on, however, whether or not the misfire stops, for a certain number of "good trips" (a drive with no misfires occurring) or a certain number of "key cycles" without the problem recurring. With that being said, the issue may be happening every time you drive, or every third time you drive or something. As for the cause of the misfire, one thing I'd look at very closely is the coil packs. Ford used to (unsure if they still do) use what was referred to as a "multi-strike" coil pack, which actually fired the spark plugs more than once per firing cycle, which offered a more complete burn of the fuel each time the cylinders fired. What I discovered more than once was that the coils did not fire the spark plug every time they were supposed to, which would result in a slightly unsteady idle, and be more pronounced when under load. The best way to verify this is by analyzing the current draw on the primary side of the coil using a low amp current probe and a digital scope, and comparing all cylinders to establish a baseline. An important thing to note, is that after an extended time period of running with a misfire, the PCM will actually "learn" the behavior of the engine based on exhaust readings, and adjust the fuel delivery (called fuel trim) based on that information. As time goes on, the result becomes even more skewed to offset the continued exhaust gas readings. Essentially, when a cylinder(s) misfire, is shows the exhaust as being "rich" (too much fuel/unburnt fuel) so the PCM reduces fuel delivery. Over time, this continued reduction of fuel delivery could result in an overall "lean" condition for the whole engine, which can lead to other random misfires, especially during a heavy acceleration or heavy load condition. What this means is that the initial problem needs to be fixed, then the "fuel trim" (learned adjustment setting by the PCM) either needs to be completely reset, or the PCM has to re-learn the way the engine operates and correct the fuel delivery issue over time. Clearly I am not able to diagnose from 4,000 miles away, but that is my initial gut reaction based on what you've said. I certainly don't advocate throwing parts at it, hoping to fix the issue, but, since you already have the new coil pack, it would be a simple test to see if the issue goes away or not. Just remember, if you put it on, you own it, no returns or refunds. Of course, it's also possible that it could be another issue, but like I said that would be my first suspected item to look at. I had an older Ford Expedition and have always done my own maintenance. I work in electronics, electrical and mechanical all my life. I can tell you that you are probably right on this. my coils went out every time I opened the hood. the water would leak down and take out the coil but others also went out all the time. I drove around with a pile of them in the back. I would suggest swapping number 5 for another easy to get to cylinder and see if the problem moves. this way the new parts are not used yet and can be returned.

by the way reset the codes before testing after swap. P0305 will cause other codes to show up bank 1 is one side of motor and bank 2 is the other. had this also. don't change the coil to the other that is bad. multiple can go out at once. I got to the point of changing them all when it started having some go out.

@@ssue4q I agree with you guys! I'll bet the inside of the catalytic converter broke off and plugs the exhaust. That piece bounces around in there and can't come out due to a screen at the exhaust end of the converter. ONCE THE CONVERTER WAS REMOVED AND PUNCHED OUT to test the vehicle it had removed the codes.

I love old cookbooks and I have many. Since I've been gluten and dairy free it's hard to find older recipes that are G and D free.
Although good ole coconut macaroons are a great go to in the older recipes lol.

It is going into limp mode, it could also be a module in the automatic transmission, throttle body may have an issue

Yes and no. The sensor is getting wet from condensation from the inter-cooler and causing the vehicle to go into the "limp home mode". Replacing the sensor will not fix the issue. Ford is getting a whole lot of performance from a very small displacement engine with "Eco-boost". One of the drawbacks is that a lot of condensation forms in the intake system and turning the car off and turning it back on allows the computer to reset and takes it out of the "limp mode".

Water boils at room temperature in a vacuum. The reverse is true if you compress air. Water forms at the bottom of a compressor tank from humidity and from time to time, you have to drain the tank. A turbocharged engine, even with an inter-cooler sends a lot of condensation into the intake. Ford 3.5 EcoBoost goes into "limp mode" under hard acceleration because it is sucking too much water past the sensors. Turning the engine off and starting it again resets the engine controller and takes it out of the "limp mode".
Replace the coil on Cylinder #5
Most check engine lights are related to emission components, ie. egr valve, oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, etc.

I love old cook books too. I was gifted one called the White House Cookbook, last copyrighted in 1899. The pages are so old they turned tannish brown. Hope your truck get fixed and stay safe.

It sounds like you're getting condensation in the intercooler and it's getting sucked into the intake, in turn causing the vehicle to go into "limp mode" when it is switched to AUTOMATIC but the sensors are bypassed when it is switched to MANUAL. That's why the check engine light comes on and you can't go anywhere until you shut it down and restart. This is something Ford addressed and supposedly fixed. It technically is an atmospheric condition (humidity) and it is not something that any shop can fix. It is like water forming on the outside of a glass of ice tea on a hot day. It is basically something you will have to live with and you probably will just want to leave it in manual for loads and hard acceleration. If you were driving it under the same conditions in a desert (no humidity) then this would never be an issue.

A whistle sound could be a vacuum leak on the intake manifold or lose spark plug or a vacuum line. Try to spot it with the hood up and the engine running. Just be careful not to get any hands near the fan or pulleys. Witch side of the engine is the whistle sounding from? Write down the OBD Codes, and look it up online. The loss of power is the CPU module going into cripple mode, it's a safeguard that's programmed into it. So it's not the CPU, it's just a vacuum leak somewhere I had mentioned earlier.

Also that a ecoboost? If so the whistle is the twin turbos… try running 91 octane gas for a bit to see if your octane sensor is working properly
The vehicle that you have is a Ford with a 3.5 Ecoboost with twin turbos and an intercooler. When switched to automatic the sensors send signals to the Engine Control Module. When it is switched to manual some of theses sensors are bypassed. The ECM has the ability to shut the car down but it does not completely turn the car off when certain sensors tell the ECM that something is wrong. That is referred to "Limp Mode" or "Limp Home Mode". This will also trigger a check engine light and it will also trigger a misfire code event that can be read with a diagnostic scan tool. Under extreme load and or hard acceleration it is quite possible that the ECM is receiving a signal from a sensor telling it to go into limp home mode. When in limp home mode the vehicle will not accelerate and it will only allow the engine to reach slow top speed. When you pull over and turn the car off the ECM resets and turns off the "limp home mode" allowing normal operation again. Driving the vehicle in "manual mode" bypasses the sensor that is sending a signal to the ECM so the vehicle does not go into limp home mode under extreme load and or hard acceleration. HIGH HUMIDITY (moisture in the form of condensation) is accumulating in the intake and is triggering the sensor to shut down the vehicle. It is not caused by a bad sensor and nothing is malfunctioning. The 3.5 engine is a relatively small displacement engine with turbos. You are "pushing the engineering envelope" when you have it under extreme hard load conditions. Atmospheric conditions are becoming a factor when doing so. Basically, there is nothing wrong with the vehicle except that it is reaching its design limitations. You probably do not have a serious problem after all. You simply need to switch to manual when it is loaded going up steep hills and under hard acceleration. That is why you have a manual switch so you can override or bypass the ECM. Most vehicle that go into limp home mode do not have any way to reset without being towed and going into the shop facing a huge repair bill. Your vehicle is engineered differently and you simply can turn the key off and your vehicle will reset. That is a great feature to have but it is not an indication that anything is actually mechanically wrong with it.

My husband had a truck that did the same thing. It wound up being a control module in the transmission. When putting it in manual your overriding the control module. Since having it fixed he has had no issues.
That harness for Kenai is the same one Seals and paratroopers use for the military dogs when jumping from planes. I hope you never have to do that though.

While idling, spray a little carb cleaner around all vac lines and vac ports, if there a vac leak in that area you are spraying, the engine idle will change a little, most of the time increase,
not foolproof but can be helpful sometimes,
I have two F150’s. And a Jeep, and a 4Runner. I start with Google and research the forums to figure out the issue. Once I know what it is I search the repair procedure on CZcams.

I think we have the same safety harness for climbing the roofs. Poor Kenai and his harness. lol. But you got him off the ground with it and that is a good thing. He is not a small pupper. Great video Alone.

Luv the larch/tamerack trees, Montana has a small grove of them, the Girard Grove, Seeley Lake, MT, with "Gus" the world's largest tamerack. 163' ft, 273" circumference, 1000 yrs old & survived 40 wildfires.

Have they checked the front cluster board? It’s the brains of your vehicle. It’s very common issue in these types of vehicles. I used to work as a service advisor at Alaska sales and service. But in my humble opinion, the whole front panel needs to be replaced possibly?! It definitely causes these issues, along with a slew of others!! Thanks again for another excellent video. I actually was a mechanic for Ford and I would offer a second opinion that it is not the "cluster board".

Try checking all the dip sticks and caps on fluids to make sure they are all closed and covered correctly. A tech left my husband's oil dip stick off once and he had similar problem. Btw I know nothing about cars, lol.

Have you checked CZcams for what it could be? Everything is on there. If you have experienced this then someone else has as well. Sometimes it can be something small and easy that you can fix yourself. Check also with an agency (cant remember the name) that pushes car manufacturers to do recalls because so many people have had the same issue. Im sure with a little research you can find what im referring to. That way you can see if its the make and model thats having this issue or just your car.

Could you Replace your gas cap? If it's a vacuum issue like I had on a Chevy it could be as simple as that. I had slightly cross threaded my gas cap and removing and carefully replacing it properly solved my issue. Overtightened it can happen too. Smoothly put your gas cap on and only ONE click to avoid air gap and also too tight.
NOT a mechanic but had this happen when I was single. Was glad was only the gas cap. Your mention of vacuum jogged my memory of this.
I do feel you about the check engine light. We have spent $3k on various repairs and tows because of a check engine that no one including the dealer can fix. So frustrating.

We had that problem in our Honda. I seem to recall it was a cylinder in the engine? Pretty costly repair.
With losing power going uphill -- I. would. replace the Fuel Pump Relay . (. $40 -- $60. Plug. like fuse/ brain chip ) it controls the fuel pump. You may be getting less fuel than you need to the engine . OR if that fails have Fuel Pump Evaluated. Relays are cheap and can be pulled out and a new one pluged in. Easy Fast job.

Hi Alone, You mentioned your vehicle is a 2016 3.5 and it is twin turbo. There was an issue with that engine which was corrected for the 2017 on 3.5 Twin Turbo. That engine has Direct injection. The issue was that no fuel was not available to clean the Intake valves They would get covered with carbon and gunk not allowing them to seat, hence misfire and wear. In 2017 they corrected the problem by installing port injectors as well, which helps clean the intake valves. What you can do with your engine is have the valves cleaned and install a oil separator. The oil separator is an easy self install and easy to empty about every oil change. The oil separator is reasonably priced. And should be installed regardless if this is your issue or not. I forget the brand of the separator. People with the newer engines still install the separators for piece of mind but not really required. The oil separator prevents oil and other waste chemicals form entering your intake valves.
Twin Turbo on a moderately small displacement engine is quite an engineering accomplishment to mass produce for the general public. It seems that some of the original 3.5 high mileage engines needed a little bit more engineering before being mass produced and now the owners are having to suffer the $$$ consequences. It isn't practical for someone in remote Alaska to depend on the lack of dependability from a 2016 version of the 3.5 EcoBoost.

The fall protection harness is one of the best things you have. It must be awful on the roof in the winter particularly. At least now it’s unlikely to be fatal.
my ford explorer was doing that too. My check engine light was doing that and the read said the same yours did. I changed out the O2 sensors and it cleared the check engine light. I also use Chem-12 fuel additive every few months.

My advice to you regarding your car which is the highest priority since you live remotely is to contact the manufacturer of the car and find the mechanical places they recommend.! Maybe there are none in Alaska who knows? Their certainly is a problem asking subscribers can help but finding manufacturers mechanics is better.!!!

We recently had to get our engine replaced. It is a 2017 Ford Edge. There was a TSB saying that certain eco boost engines were manufactured with faulty gaskets, causing coolant to leak into the cylinder. In short, the entire engine needed to be replaced, and of course, our warranty on the vehicle just expired. Just my thoughts, I truly hope it is not the case! Good luck and I hope you get some answers!

Watching this kind of late. But I do have to say I grew up driving manual shift and it's just second nature. It's never distracting to shift. I miss it so much. You lose a lot of control of your vehicle without it.

Check your gas cap to make sure it has a good seal and don't top off your gas when filling. Howdo I know? I have a 2003 Nissan truck light stays on and was never able to get the thing it needed (gas milage is better without changing it anyway) and same with my old Toyota matrix.
Aww Kenai is such a good boy! Fingers crossed you get the check engine light resolved. My old Camry had that blasted light come on and I had so many things repaired (catalytic converters are expensive!) Never did get corrected. Wow those larch trees are gorgeous! My son had the same problem. After changing multiple parts it was the computer. But after changing the computer never happened again. Same vehicle.
He did reboot before changing it but nothing changed.
The dealership fixed it

Live those old books too..got so.e of my own but not just cook books or home remedies.. but schooling books to.one is my grandfathers primer book from growing up in Saco, Montana a couple on Montana .
Oh whom does not love our history books specialy of George Washington.his mother is a cousin on my Ball tree.
Family history is a favorite of my own collections I dig deep in to my roots. Oh the treasures my tree has in information on many branches.
Those darn engine lights are a joke but do help us keep our wheels going . I drive a neon which has had the light one since my sons father bpught it he done all he could think of but still it stays on..but what I found out is it very well could be the ABS system as the trax light and another brake light are all now on.
So yea try all you can last resort will be the ABS ..it could be a vacume leak in brake housing as well.. di get it checked I am sure it could be the ABS due to the weight at the time it came on..
Oh get a CB that can reach some others out there if you need they can pick up on a ham radio if any has a ham out that way..

Could very well be valves. Have a compression test done on it. Super easy and will tell you if it's a problem with them. Pretty common to have valve issues with the persistent misfire codes and the other stuff you have already replaced.

i'm not sure what it's called but there is a part in the vehicle that makes a difference between high altitude and low altitude. I was going to college in Trinidad State Junior college and i had a fellow student that was from michigan and since Trinidad's Altitude is over 7,000 feet he had to have the part worked on that controls altitude. His truck worked fine and had good pickup afterward.
Alone im so glad i found your channel i have been binge watching i enjoy your videos so much. I love that someone sent you a harness for your boy to be safe getting out from upstairs also. I'm sure you are done ready doing tis but just in case i would be doing practice times with himso you will be able to get him in quickly not to waste time in a emergency situation he would be panicked and you also and could cause you to lose valuable time to get you both to safety. Hey Alone, I’ve working at Ford for 7 years and have seen similar issues with the 3.5. Plugs and coils are a good start and also injectors. Has anyone run a power balance or relative compression test?
Also would recommend a manual compression test and a leak down test to rule out any base engine concerns.
Both cats will need to be replaced due to the P0420 and P0430 codes. But not till the engine is fixed correctly.

Consider reinstalling your headrest in your car. It’s an important part of the safety system if you get in a crash.
Do research on disconnecting both battery cables. Hold together for 30 seconds, then reconnect to battery. This action should reset computer on vehicle. Kinda like powering of your phone and turning it back on. Default type stuff.
