    I think mine slipped on my BMW x3 28i, it’s been sitting in my driveway for 3 years now. Not sure what to do with it. How can I tell if the engine is still good? Should I try to turn it over by hand or take apart enough to see timing chain?

    Great video!
    Question......
    Is it possible to replace JUST the upper guide (between the cams) without going through all this? And, after replacing that guide, how long till the guide turns from white to brown. (Long story). Thanks

    I’m have a question
    My chain doesn’t do any movement but if you move chain guide that visible from oil cap it moves from side to side with the chain…
    … is it normal?

      guides should have some wiggle room when cold but if its moving like 1/4 an inch that's definitely snapped guides. just replaced my timing chain at 150k miles and had no visible signs and my chain was tight. i didnt think about it until i got the engine oil pressure too low warning and found out my guides completely fell off and my engine could have exploded

    Do you use the flywheel locating pin and flywheel lock tool for loosening and torquing the crank bolt?

    Can you please tell me what causes the chain guides to fail/brake? Has the timing chain tensioner failed at that point and the chain is not that "tight" anymore and hits the guides which consequently get damaged and brake?
    Thank you!

      I looked into it and the problem seems to be the timing chain guides themselves since they’re made of plastic they wear out faster. At least from what I’ve read online

      just a cheap plastic

    If you do a visual check and the guide is not orange but white does this means maybe it’s been replaced already ?

    I got a 2014 328I with 55k miles with N20. If there are no issues does it make sense to change the timing chain guides as a preventive measure?

    • @goodamnesia
      @goodamnesia Před 7 hodinami

      Only if you plan on keeping your 328 for another 100K, otherwise I'd trade it in for a newer 2018 and up model. Been there.

    Can the timing chain cause engine misfire in the high RPM range?

    • @acidynamix
      @acidynamix  Před rokem

      It could but more likely related to spark plugs or a coil pack. Very common on those cars.

    Why bother with the labor intensive replacement of old plastic parts with new plastic parts. Why not upgrade and replace plastic with metal followers and tensioners.

    Could you maybe have found a slightly more aggravating background drum beat? I couldn't finish the video as I didn't want to turn the sound off in case I missed a comment but it wasn't worth the aggravation of listening to the music with that terrible beat.
