  • The best tool to deal with singing anxiety is movement. That's why we flew Chris Johnson across the Atlantic to teach you how to unlock the power of your singing through movement.
Chris is a vocal coach known for developing areas of the voice that may not have been usable or releasing any tension or discomfort that has crept in over time. Helping singers strike the perfect balance between technique and artistry is an art unto itself. And Chris has mastered that art and will share his secrets with Singeo members.
Our new featured course, "Movement: The Quickest Way To Improve Your Voice," is available now, and you can have full access for FREE by signing up for a Singeo Membership trial.

I can absolutely relate. I can sing along with a recording, I can sing with others but the second my voice gets louder than theirs or they stop singing or the recording stops, my voice cuts out and as hard as I try I can't control my voice. It feels like it's stuck in my throat

You can try singing with headphones, listening to someone else singing it with you. Chose someone who matches your volume (or is a bit louder) and song style (and possibly range, too if you have trouble singing with a bass when you’re a soprano, or vice versa), and repeat singing it over and over, and slowly, everytime you sing it, slowly lower the volume just a little each time. I hope this helps!!! (Extra tip: if you’re still struggling, try singing while reading the lyrics (even if you have the song memorized) while your listening to the singer to boost your confidence in what your singing a little better)

sometimes when i get on stage,i
end up almost crying, especially if friends and family are there for support,i believe it is because i have hardly ever had support ,i have most been put down in my life by family being treated like i am not good enough,i am working on this, it's just challenging

Regards different environments. Behavioural Therapists would call this controlled exposure. It's how I approach it. Home (alone), Home (family/friends), Open Mic, Gig. Focus/control on breathing great tip - anxiety causes erratic/shallow breathing. Preparation makes me feel more relaxed too.

This is amazing. It makes sense and I thought of this before. He is a good teacher and I would love to work with him or someone like him. Also, not to forget, the host is amazing: talent, kindness, cuteness (literally, she is so bubbly and nice) and humbleness. Great videos. Thank you for inspiring us singers.

I always thought I just had simply, tension. Turns out, I had tension because of singing anxiety. When I was with my vocal coach, I was able to sing a high note in a song I was familiar. But when I tried to sing that exact high note in a different song, I had really bad tension.

Yes! @singeo I'd like to hear y'all talk more about this tension in regard to emotions. How do you sing an emotional song without getting tense and choked up? This has happened to me a few times while performing at church, and it is so, so embarrassing!

This is a great question. The thing about singing emotional songs close to us is that we are better to practice with a slightly different persona or an identity. Like a person who is being compassionate for another who's experiencing it, rather than experiencing it ourselves. You're delivering a message, rather than being the message. It's a bit of a fallacy that you must feel the true emotion of a song in order to really perform it. As you've found out, that is crippling. Instead, if we adopt an identity and sing then we can depart ourselves from it a little, and act it out instead. Actors do this incredibly well, as they bring some of themselves to the role whilst still being separate from it via the character.
If you try that but it's still shaky, then it's maybe more likely to be general stage nerves to deal with (which my advice in this video can help)
