For me they are just ahead of their time...
Everytime i listen to them, I feel like on the first SOAD album. They know how to be catchy with a vocalist that feels like an istrument and a drum that feels like a vocal!
I'm a bit afraid of dying in a moshpit when they play some specific songs, but I call it worth it if i can watch them live!

My life changed when this album dropped. I was 20 years old I think. Something kind of pivoted in my mind and I havent been the same person since. That's what it feels like when remembering back to that time. Maybe something about the fact that I had "grown up" and started thinking about my future. The album is pretty heavy on the themes of birth, death and life being this eternal cycle (first track is Orobouros for example). Also about our legacy as humans, in many ways, but mostly in an environmental way. What we leave behind us after we die (Toxic garbage island?). So it got me thinking about global warming even more.
I think the instrument you're referring to is a Didjeridoo, from Australia. Also a really cool Aphex Twin track!

I see what you mean about them sounding a bit like Orbit Culture during that one section. OC is pretty much a cross between Gojira and Metallica, I love those guys. Funny you bring them up, their frontman has gone on record to say this very song made him cry the first time he heard it and is essentially what inspired him to become a musician.

Really cool reaction! Gojira is one of my favorite bands, every band member and especially their drummer is incredible. I also love their kind of tribal sound as you mentioned in the video. What is also special about Gojira, is, that their lyrics talk a lot about the environment and the relationship between humans and the other species on this planet, what I consider as really cool especially in times like this. You should definitely check out their songs ‚Esoteric Surgery‘, ‚The Gift of Guilt‘, ‚Explosia‘, ‚Pray‘ or ‚Wolf down the earth‘. Also check out the band Beyond Creation and their song ‚Omnipresent Perception‘, or the band Katatonia and one of their songs ‚My twin‘. Another band I highly suggest is Fleshgod Apocalypse and their song ‚Epilogue‘. Stay safe and stay metal \m/

Yes, Gojira is an awesome band. Mario is such a beast behind the kit. He doesn't just play them, he destroys them. Not a fan of their newest single either, so I hope the other stuff they'll be putting out will be better, maybe closer to their older style like this?
Anyway, as for bigger bands that you should check out, definitely some Symphony X. Should be up your alley, as they are basically the more neo-classical version of Dream Theater, with much better and grittier vocals. Songs I woulld recommend is either Inferno (Unleash The Fire), or the 24-minute mammoth beast of a song that is The Odyssey. The latter being quite a journey both musically and lyrically, as it talks about the journey of the Ancient Greek hero Odysseus.

the intro polyrhythm is pretty simple on paper
    5 5 5 3 3 3, 5 5 5 3 3
with the last hits on the 5 and 3 being rest notes
    so its like 4, 4, 4, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 4, 2, 2
and then when the other instruments come in, Mario plays quarter notes on the ride and the kicks do 3-3-3-2-2-2-3-3-3-2-2 and the snare playing basically on the note after the last kick or being the 4 and the 3 after the kicks.
