    Sweet setup, I would have used the mounting brackets as retainer. Put the tablet flush on the mount board with the brackets on the inside of the board. Your screen wouldn't be raised and the Pi ports would have more clearance deeper in the mounting panel?

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  Před 2 lety +1

      Absolutely could've (and probably should have) done something more streamlined. Though I actually used the brackets to bring the display closer to the correct angle/position to match the original dash cluster as the board it was mounted to was sunken in fairly deep.

      @@Bbeavis That makes perfect sense. I'm looking at two different types. They have the ultra wide displays 14.9 inches long by 4.53 inches tall and the smaller ultra wide is 7.9 inches long by 2.5 tall with a 3rd that's 10 wide and maybe 4 tall? The diy perks guy has showed me how to use a display driver for anything right? I'll try to flush mount behind the original bezels with custom graphics I hope. Maybe this winter, I don't have regular heat in my garage so kitchen project?

    Get a 5.2 volt power supply (the max voltage for USB), and good USB cable.
    If you are worried about the micro USB connector, you can connect the power to the GPIO pins, there are 2 sets of unregulated 5V, the one set is used for power between the screen and the computer.

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the suggestions Michael. I think in my case it might be the USB cable as the power supply is a 3A 5V unit (supposedly).

    Great write up! The only other thing I wish TunerStudio had is a GPS lap timer, but that is somewhat out of the scope of that software. As is we still need to run another device to handle lap timing. Still, this gets you 8/10ths of the way to a Racepak style dash for 1/10th the price. Nice job!

  • @NorthernScrub
    @NorthernScrub Před 6 lety +2

    That little lightning icon means the amperage supply is too low. The Pi is underpowered, so it might be worth looking into a solution that can deliver at least 2.1amps to it.

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  Před 6 lety

      Yeah that is my understanding, but it seems the "3A" power supply I have isn't really 3amp.

    • @NorthernScrub
      @NorthernScrub Před 6 lety +2

      If you're using an el-cheapo or chinesium power supply, stop using it immediately. It won't be able to adequately protect the Pi against surging, and messy alternator power is frisky at the best of times - and you're also powering the screen through the Pi I assume, which increases the requirement for stable current.
      Most cheap 12v supplies use the LM7805 voltage regulator. This can only ever supply around 1amp, and they often don't come with a heatsink which is against specification.
      To properly engineer a solution, I'd look to something that's used to power long-life-service equipment, such as instruments on buses or lorries. You need something that will last for at least a few years, and cheap shit just isn't going to cut it - especially not if you're tucking it away behind the dash. Here's a possible solution at about thirty quid: www.powerstream.com/dc-dcz0503.htm

    Im just a little confused on how you put power to the rpi??? Everything ive seen makes it use a normal outlet plugin to power it. Trying to add this to my MS setup but im not sure how to make it receive the power it needs. A little clarification there would be awesome.
    And then im guessing the rpi connects straight to my MS ecu through its USB-b to regular usb on the rpi???

    • @gageskarbru182
      @gageskarbru182 Před 3 lety

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  Před 3 lety +1

    Unfortunately a Pi is a terrible choice for something like this. Long boot times, and if there is any sort of power interruptions it may reboot and might corrupt the SD card. Plus the SD card slot is prone to failure even in regular use, which means a lot higher failure rate under vibration, moisture, etc. In my experience they are sensitive to power such that momentary brownouts corrupt the SD card so at the very least a small battery is required to power the Pi and allow it orderly shutdown. There are SBCs with built in flash (BeagleBone Black for example) that eliminate the SD card as an issue but still suffer long boot times unless you configure it to sleep. Better would be a dedicated processor with enough memory (Arduino Mega/Atmega 2560, ESP32, ESP8266, etc.) and screen with a supported software library.

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  Před 6 lety +3

      Hi Aaron, in my particular case bootup time is not a concern as this isnt the kind of car you just start up and and immediately drive away. And, I'm not exactly using the dash for common dashboard needs, the key information is engine health and monitoring such as oil pressure and coolant temp etc. With regard to the SD failures, I've never had an issue thus far, and I have a power off push button installed which I press to safely shut down the Pi before cutting the power.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake Před 6 lety +2

      Ah yes, good point that in a race car you'll have time in the pits preparing the vehicle before use. Only concern is if it crashes out on the track. It might be distracting. Could be mitigated by putting a big capacitor (10,000uF) in parallel with the Pi 5V supply, and epoxying the SD card into the holder. I looked into using an SBC like Orange/RaspberryPi, BeagleBone, etc. for the dash in my Cosmo as I am about to do something similar but settled on using several Arduinos to read the CAN bus data and run steppers, LEDs, etc. mainly because of bootup and long term reliability concerns. The break in sure sucked, and came at a time in my life when it was the last thing needed. But I am still working on the Cosmo whenever I can between other projects (the biggest of which being the full gut and rebuild of my house) and hopefully will have an episode soon.

    • @MrSHUTUPCAT
      @MrSHUTUPCAT Před 6 lety +4

      Not gonna argue the boot times :D but honestly, by the time you are on the road, it's up and running. With a little bit of work, you can squeeze those bugs out. I'm using dual raspberry pi's in our #teslonda, proper insulation, wiring a good DC/DC converter, you're good to go. To avoid an SD corruption, I'm using the Petroblock Powerblock, with a keyed signal to turn it on. Before I went that route, I put a readonly layer to prevent any corruption issues. For power, I'm using a 12v-5v buck converter and good gauge wire/usb to provide a strong 2.5a/5v to each unit. The pi3 has plenty of memory and processing power to do what you need. (at least for me)
      It's a great and fun project and yes, if you were serious about making this industrial level/sellable, you would move to a better PCB solution, but for a fun kickass DIY project, go nuts. As long as it isn't supporting critical car functions, I say have a blast. Love what you did with the Bezel, BEAVIS Motorsport.
