Welcome back to the Gentleman's Gazette. in today's video, we'll discuss pleated pants, their reputation today, who should wear them, and how to do so with style.
For some people, mentions of pleated pants evoke the worst fashion trends of the 1980s and 90s. Think for example of the power suit and other baggy fashions, with current trends favoring flat front cuts, pleated pants are also seen as increasingly unfashionable today. The truth about pleated pants, however, is that you can totally pull them off and we're going to tell you how.
So first, we have to establish what is the definition of pleats. Simply put, pleats are gathered folds of fabric in the area below the waist of a pair of trousers known as the rise or more simply the front. As you might have guessed on flat-fronted pants, this area is smooth. Pleats can either face forward meaning they point inward toward the fly or they can be reversed meaning they point outward toward the pockets. Forward pleats are typically a safer and more conservative option as they remain flat whereas outward facing pleats usually have a little bit of added volume to them, for example, the pants I'm wearing in today's video have outward facing pleats and you'll see that they don't lie completely flat. The number of pleats on a pair of pants can vary usually there are just one or two though some pairs of pants could have three or even up to four pairs of pleats.
Who should wear pleats?
Firstly, because of the extra fabric, those men who are looking for more comfort or ease of movement, especially in the waist, would consider wearing pleated pants. For example, if you happen to have some weight around your midsection, pleated pants can go a long way to disguising this whereas flat-fronted pants would emphasize that weight. If you're a man who happens to have a large seat or large thighs, this is true as well, especially if the pants you wear are worn at your natural waist. For example, our founder Sven Raphael Schneider favors pleated pants because he shares an issue with a lot of men.
So now that you have some more information, let's get into how to wear pleated pants today and still look stylish. Some of the issues of bagginess that we've seen in past decades can be alleviated today just by putting a pair of pleats on a more close-fitting modern style pair of pants.
Another tip is to start with a lighter weight fabric. You can certainly still wear pleated pants in winter weight cloth such as flannel but in that case, proper fit is even more crucial than with a lighter weight fabric.
Another option is to find a pair of pants that just has fewer pleats on it overall. In particular, dress pants with a single pleat will have a continuous line. The leg line runs up and blends into the pleat elongating the leg line overall.
Now let's turn to a common question if you're wearing pleated pants, do they or do they not have to have cuffs? Cuffs add visual weight to counterbalance the weight at the top of the pants provided by the pleats. Cuffs do make a pair of pants a little bit more informal and some people will also see them as being more traditional. So if you don't want to go for that look, you can wear pleated pants that don't have any cuff.
Another technique to make your pleated pants appear a little bit more modern is to have them tailored without any break at the bottom. A break at the bottom of your pants can reinforce the idea of pleated pants looking more sloppy especially if there's more volume from outward-facing pleats. Also, a break interrupts that continuous crease that goes all the way down your leg if you have a single pleat.
So, we'd like to know are you a fan of pleated pants or do you think they should be confined to the past?

classics never go out of style, just on vacation. 😂
Just my two cents worth from a “woman of a certain age.” I have always liked the look of pleated pants on men. They somehow look more classy, more stylish, and men seem to be more comfortable wearing them. The newer, flat front style always look uncomfortable to me and bring down the quality look of a suit. Pleated pants in a suit always look good. Flat front, not so much.
Difficult to find suits now with pleated pants.
women 'of ceratin age' up DO NOT MATTER. they are paria
@@michaelcap9550If there are any Thrift stores/ Goodwills where you live, you might try them. I get a lot of Vintage, and retro clothing from them.
Thankfully, pleats and high-rise trousers are coming back. It's mostly for the girls based on what I notice(especially in class) but I'm gonna join in for the boys out there.
Not sure where you found Preston, Raphael, but I can't imagine a more perfect person to add to your staff. He has the look, poise and articulation. Home run. Hope to meet you both in Atlanta at Menfluential 2019. Oh, and pleats? Hell no.
Thanks for your kind words! I'm not sure as yet if I'll be attending Menfluential, but Raphael will indeed be in attendance.

Pleats and high (actually - normal) rise are the staple, lol.
Pleats are absolutely great once you wear them "correctly". Un my country, 85% of men wear them incorrectly. So I've never considered pleats as fashionable. But when I started watching videos like this, I start to understand that pleated pants have their own purposes and you have to wear them properly. On the othr hand, flat front pants are easier to be worn properly.
His body language and stage presence needs work. You can tell Raphael has looked at himself in the mirror for practice. Keep it up Preston, you’ll do great! Thanks for the vid
@@JeremiahAlphonsus Millenial ignorami? I am sure pants of the 1920s were flat-front.
This man is so angular.
Atlas457 it’s like he was created in a wood shop lol
@Julius Songling Trodding barefeet on rocks.
Preston is doing a great job. I'm enjoying his videos as much as Raphael's. I'm almost tempted to try pleats now.
Especially if you feel like you're a big guy, or bigger than you want to be, try them. I really liked them when I lost a lot of weight even.
I wear pleated as much as possible in linen, wool and cotton chino styles. I have denim pleated jeans from Haggar Work to Weekend brand name.
I always get single forward pleats on my bespoke suit. Legs well tapered from the knee downwards. No cuffs. Looks more interesting and is more comfortable than flat front.
Very difficult to find decent pleated trousers off the rack in my experience.
Wouldn't tapered pants look better with cuffs ?
Off the rack I can recommend to you: Anton Meyer, Pini Parma, Benevento.
Anton Meyer and Benevento are more roomy- I wont fit it in Pini Parma pants sadly.
Anton Meyer even has a sewn in rubber band to keep your shirt better in place
Answer: It depends...
In my opinion, pleats don't have anything to do with fashion. Pleats aren't in or out of fashion. Simply put, pleats are a stylistic aspect of menswear that has many applications for differential formalities.
This fellow is a worthy addition to the channel. Very well spoken and obviously knows his stuff.
"You can totally pull them off, and we will show you how." If I can't pull off my pants, I have a real problem.
Preston, your delivery is really coming on. It's wonderful to see you getting into the role, I enjoyed this video very much. Keep up the good work.
Preston is a good addition to the channel. I'm fairly new to dressing up, and I've wondered if it was safe to wear pleated pants. What I'd like to see is a video on the basics of how to match colours, patterns and textures when choosing sports jackets and trousers.
I'll say this for now: stay tuned!

Yeah, but we miss the smiling Brazilian guy with the strong German accent
Always liked cuffed pleated pants the most!
Great job, Preston. I’ve always been a fan of pleated pants (from watching those fashion plates in old movies) but have gone flat front with the crowd. This gives me the courage and information to get my pleats back!
I just bought my first pleated pants as part of a grey flannel suit and I was kind of surprised of the extra room because I am used to slim flat front pants. Your video was a great help on all the questions I had. Great job!
I've always loved pleaded pants with cuffs and still love them. Excellent video!
As a very slim man, I must say I love pleated trousers. I got two pairs from Spier and Mackay and they fit very well, the silhouette is much better than flat front and more comfortable too
My grandad's generation bought clothes for comfort, not for vanity. Hence wide leg trousers with pleats. It was also simpler and more economical from a manufacturing perspective to make trousers this way as they fit a wide array of physiques.
I think that was very well described. I haven’t worn pleated pants since the 90s. I can however see the appeal to date. Also you made some strong points that I might not have thought of in defense of them currently. Thanks again for another great video
Love the recap at the end too. I was wondering about those exact clothing items and u addressed them all
I do wear pleated pants every day, even at work. Actually, these are custom-made chinos from Lands'End that I got made this way. They are also high raised and hemmed. Plenty of room for my large hips because of the extra fabric. Many advantages also: I can wear them at any season. These days, it is "funny" to see my colleagues with skinny fit trousers and jeans shivering in the cold and myself just being alright because the extra fabric protects my legs from the cold. The same ones telling me: "You look like grandpa!" At least, Grandpa is not cold...
I really dig this guy's knowledge glad he's here to assist on this chanel👈🏾✌🏾
great instructional video old school style never dies, i love pleats and cuffs just more comfortable
Definitely enjoy a well tailored pair of pleated trousers because I'm somewhat slight of built I often will include suspender buttons to establish a more continuity in the overall look of the trousers thanks for another fine video!
Thanks for sharing. :)
Well done Preston. Thank you for sharing. I enjoy this channel. Be well.
Preston you are fantastic. Thank you for the amazing advice and great suggestions. Pleats are a must with the hips, in my opinion.
Preston, excellent presentation. You make an excellent addition to the team.
I feel in love with pleats when I saw gurkha style trousers...they add character!
Great post. I love a nice forward pleat because of my body type. I'm currently having a navy nailed suit made with a 3 1/4 notch lapel and Neapolitan shoulder with 3 button stance. The roll of the lapel is being made to roll softly to a 2 button stance.
Your video made me call my suit maker to request a single forward facing pleat. Thank you!!!
Very nice video! I just ordered my first pair of pleated pants, I bought them made-to-measer
Awesome video Preston!
Going to buy some pleats now! Thanks Preston!
I like Swen’s look and style. Thanks for the information.
This is great, I have big thighs and slim pants are always uncomfy but I was afraid to use pleated pants bc they didn't seem stylish. change my mind. thanks :)
Excelent video! Great job Preston!
I unintentionally purchased two suits with pleated trousers. They are quite comfortable on the days I have stay seated at my desk for long hours.
Pleats have never been fashion, they have always been in style!
Good Job Preston! while I have respect for pleats, there is no way I am going beyond a single pleat.
I've never liked that "high water" look on pants...guess I lack fashion taste
Excellent video-very informative...thank you!
Preston i like you man.
Your vocabulary is awesome!
Yep, I'll echo the previous comment. Peston's videos are great, and I wear and enjoy numerous pairs of pleated pants, both odd pairs and pants that are part of suits.
I love wearing Pleated Trousers, I wear them with my 80s/90s Suits. Also I wear Suits All Day, Everyday for my Favorite Personal Style!
A couple days ago I came across a fabulous pair of navy trousers with triple pleats at the thrift store! Unfortunately they weren't my size, or I absolutely would have brought them home :'( All of my pals who are into vintage styles, thrifting, and repairing used clothing are totally bonkers for pleated pants. We just cannot get enough of them. I look forward to their glorious return
I've always admired the pleated pants but never had the courage to try them. Thanks to this guide, I will get them custom made ASAP. Also, will the pleated pants and suspenders be a good combo? Preston is doing a good job and the glasses surely enhance his overall look!
Very informative, thank you. To me fashion come and go and will come back around and it makes me laugh that pleats are considered old fashion or what your grandfather used to wear, maybe because older generations know the value of good taste in fashion and some man really know how to carry themselves - just my own opinion.
I have to say Preston is doing a great job! Not yet as refined a screen presence as Sven Raphael's but given time...
I love pleated pants and will always wear them.
There are a lot of pleats in my kilt too.
Almost all of my pants are pleated. I find that the extra room around the thighs is needed for all-day comfort. I have big thighs too.
I think you made the perfect pick in Preston!
I like this guy. A younger gentleman for the younger viewers.
It's simple. You see a video with Preston, you click the Like button.
4:47 was the best part haha Preston is phenomenal at this!
Great video, and a great job for Preston, not sure if he is better than you Raphael, and a definite yes for pleated pants.
Raphael is so much thinner ...
Good advice .
I ONLY wear double reverse pleated pants with a 1 inch cuff. Wayy more confortable. I have the same build as the guy making the video (i just found the channel tonight) also its nice to know someone who knows fashion still ubderstands the need for pleats. I use a meduim break.
Centervent coats only with pleats.
I recently bought a pair of high waisted, pleated trousers that Indiana Jones wore (which are based off of military pinks) and I've come to love how comfortable they are. It was awkward at first, but I love wearing them when I can. However I find myself in a bind looking at fitted high waisted trousers and can't decide if I want them pleated or not.
Hello. My name is Charalampos Daniilidis and i am from greece. Thank you for this video, and the content of this channel. I have recently ordered a bespoke suit from a greek tailor. I always had a problem with jeans and pants because i have very muscular yet slim legs and i always tent to tear the fabric between the legs of my pants. I even change the way i walk too because pants always seem stiff to me plus constricting the way i walk and move. After my tailor's advise i took the decision to add a pleat on my suit pants. I recently went to try them and it was the most comfortable pair of pants i have ever whore. My suit pants in my opinion ,are also very stylish. The pleat adds to their style. One thing Pleated pants are, is the solution people came up to solve my type of problems. I have already visit my tailor 3 times for abjustments with the suit and i am waiting for it to get done. You guys and this channel led me do a decision to order my first suit, which is a dark charcoal 2 button suit. Before that i went with a pair of bespoke oxford shoes too an i will never regret it. Keep up the good work and continue the inspirational videos. You are a very good source of information and inspiration and open the eyes of the new generation. Thank you :)
I like pleated pants mainly for more space they give, I much more prefer wider trousers than slim ones becoause slim pants pull hairs on my legs and its uncomfortable for.
Pleats are simply a functional item. For a man with a larger seat and thighs, what's a better option - pleats on an otherwise sleek and stylish pair of pants, or buying 1-2 waist sizes larger than necessary just to get enough leg room? I've been buying 1-2 waist sizes larger and having the waist taken in, just to get the leg room I need. Pleats seem like a much simpler solution.
Pleats are fine. Depends on the occasion and look you're gravitating towards. On the yacht, I think a pair of pleated khakis would look fantastic, but in a dinner setting, may want to consider straight legs. Wish I had a Yacht!! LOL
I love pleated high waisted or fishtail pants, I just can’t find quality brands or stores that aren’t in the high end
Excellent, elegant and succinct presentation.
He said you can totally wear them and pull them off.... Thankfully I can do that with my current pants
I have quite a few pairs of pleated trousers. Some double pleated some single pleated and some inward facing. I also have a vintage saville row suit that came with pleated trousers...... I love pleats it’s so annoying that they are hard to buy in the uk due to not being the in fashion I really have to search online and buy vintage
I've always wondered about Pleated pants since you see them a lot in second hand stores and I've never been able to make them look as neat and nice as flat fronted pants. They always seem to balloon up thanks to the excess cloth and the stiff zipper when I sit too which is a bit awkward. lol
If you wear suits to work, you need some with pleats just for comfort reasons. 80% of my suits are athletic cut or English cut suits, but I need some with fuller cut and pleats to be comfortable sometimes. Or if you sit down at a desk at work, pleats will be helpful.
I am considering getting a suit made to measure with single pleat pants. I usually wear flat front, relaxed fit dress pants because I like to have a roomy feel. However my first mtm suit from Men’s wearhouse has flat front pants and while they fit it feels just a touch constricted for my tasted.
Without pleats, pants look so plain in the front and is awkward and also restrict leg movement, on an unstretchable cloth. But a single reverse pleat can give a better decent look.
I feel that they give the paints some style. then just having them flat. like a pair of jeans...I myself, love having pleated paints.
I like this guy, he made five minutes feel like twenty. I don’t want to go to bed yet and this is a great video to postpone that
I only wear pleated dress pants. I love the extra room it gives up front. Also, I only wear dress pants with a cuff at the bottom. Today I just put on a pair of dress pants that I bought because they were on sale. Flat front and no cuff…I felt so constrained up front and I didn’t like the way the pants “fell” with no cuff. Just my preference. I’m also not a fan of the slim fit and “skinny” jeans so I’m sure that plays a part. This guy really knows his stuff.
Great quality video 😃
Nice presentation Preston, the trousers need a little tapering.
I go for trouser with pleats (two, sibgle or three pleats) since April 2014.(ie Easter '14)..
Went shopping this weekend. Macy’s had no pleated pants; Von Maur and Joseph A Bank each had one style with pleats. Disappointing. For muscularly built men, pleats have always been a better option.
Luckily I hunted through my closet & took a few to the tailor to be tapered.
Good video. Good channel. Thanks.
I wish you would cover classic ballet attire in one of your upcoming videos.
Personally, I want creased dress pants. With or without pleats. It looks more formal to me. Btw, nice to have Preston again
Good video. I think pleated trousers work well for the slightly larger waisted gentleman.
I’m 26. Always liked pleated pants. Bought a third pair recently. I hate slim pants especially on guys with big legs 🤮
I would argue that wide trousers are more fashion forward at this moment, intead of the slim fit you mentioned in the video
I'm fan of pleated trousers and those retro Gurkha trousers
Any brands you guys can recommend? I'm having a hard time finding double pleated pants in Germany :(
Pleated pants! Very flexible for all silhouettes.
where do you guys purchase your pleated trousers?
Hey cat, nice wig chop and binoculars 👍
School had a non uniform day today since it's the last day of term. I thought I was dressing fairly casually in jeans a shirt and jumper but good Christ, the amount of tracksuits there made it hell.
yeah i m ok with Street wear culture but not always its the right situation.
Wow you're so cultured
A guy like me with 64”. I think i need a double pleated pants especially that I wear them with a tucked in polo
I love pleated pants! Always have!
I like pleated pants, and fortunately they are still quite commonly found here in Japan, even in new styles. Also, because of the exercises I like and the large amount of walking I do weekly, I have what could properly be termed enormous thighs. Any "thin" styles are out of the question as far as I'm concerned. I simply won't fit them.
Please close your camera's iris one stop, maybe two. The video's highlights are slightly blown out and spoil what would otherwise be a beautiful picture.
Your new presenter is doing a great job. 👍
Maybe I'm wrong but I consider pleated pants classic and not a fad. Cuffed looks more formal. In addition men wearing pleated pants show aura of confidence.
A light weight, single pleated pant with that continuous pant line without cuff is the pant I have found to be the most comfortable for those long days in the office.
Yes. For me with a gut and large thighs, double forward pleated pants are the best for me.
I find pleated pants to be more confortable and form fitting, the look is great, a great pair of pleated pants just gives me a power look.
Anyone know where I could buy really wide leg pleated chinos 30s style?
where can i get triple pleated, front facing pants?
"Middle management office drones" brilliant line Preston. Please don't copyright it!
