    It’s the Garden in May, and the garden has exploded into green life. This time, I’ll be showing the progress of my Fryd bed, how to make simple plant supports, and harvesting the first of this year’s potatoes. Then I introduce you to and plant up three very unusual edible plants - all are completely new to me - and the new works on the garden shed. I also show you this year’s container garden set-up and greenhouse garden and give you a full look at the garden and Polycrub.
    You’ll also get to see Josie, who’s grown triple the size she was in March and we wait on word from the vet about Maggie. She was hit by a car two days ago and has been at the veterinary clinic ever since.

    So glad Maggie is ok. Those fur babies! Also feathered friends (chickens, in my case) love to roam but we have big trees and hawks. So they get supervised when I'm in the garden and the dog might help deter the hawks, but I'm not counting on that. You do what you can to balance happiness vs safety. Garden looks lovely!

    Aww, poor Maggie- what a scare for you. When I had cats, I used to clip their claws and then they found it hard to scrabble up fences as no 'hooks' on their claws. My garden was totally fenced with 6ft high fencing. I also made a large , secure garden enclosure. complete\with shrubs and small trees, so my cats could enjoy outside time unsupervised. Hope these ideas might work fozaggie to keep her safe.

I wasn’t sure from your earlier post so this is welcome news! ❤️❤️❤️ I lost my beloved precious fur daughter Darcy around midnight February 12 and my heart is so broken. I have a gardening question for you. I have always been unclear about how/when to harvest potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions… as far as, do they need time to cure? Can you eat them straight out of the ground? Can they overwinter and you just dig as needed? Would love more info about those types of things!
    I hear that carrots can be left in ground all winter, and you just pick as needed. That would work great for people with no place to store them.
    Thank you for your channel. We love it!

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  Před měsícem +1

      Thank you, Janeen 💚 In mild climates, you can often leave root crops in the ground over winter. When I mean mild, that means that it doesn't dip much below freezing at all. Otherwise, you'll need to lift and store carrots, potatoes, and other crops, or they can freeze and rot in the ground. Onions are ready to harvest when the stems fall over. Garlic, when half of the lower leaves are yellow and dead. Onions and garlic need drying before storage, called curing. Though normal potatoes can be eaten straight from the ground, sweet potatoes need curing before eating and storage. See my sweet potato video for more info on how to do that.

    Hi Tanya, I sowed some asparagus from seed in spring 2021 the variety 'Connover's Colossal' of which I now have 18 plants (or crowns). I was able to cut one spear from each plant this year. Some plants are stronger, a few are a bit weaker and behind in size but should eventually catch up. I can start full cropping from next spring. I have been so busy in May and early June at the allotment almost every day and sometimes 4, 5 and even 6 hours a day at the allotment. I take sandwiches, a flask of tea or cordial and spend most of the day there occasionally and usually at least 2 hours there each day, I maybe miss obe day a week working at the allotment, now that I have fully retired from work and I turn 60 this coming Sunday 9th June (which I can hardly believe).

    Hi Tanya!
    Glad to hear goods news about Maggie. Hopefully this will teach her to not wonder off.
    I'm curious Tanya, do you or have you, grown sweet corn on the IOM?
    I grew up in a family owned nursery here in the states and in August the Dutch salesmen used to stop to get our tulip order for delivery in February. They always came home with Dad for a grilled steak and sweet corn supper. They never ate corn before and were shocked that it was on the table. Back then corn was strictly pig food in the Netherlands. Funny thing, they all loved sweet corn. This was in the late 1960s.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  Před měsícem +1

      Sweet corn is hit or miss here, especially with the wind. I have to stake each plant when I grow corn! As for food culture, corn, especially on the cob, is not as much of a staple in Europe as it is in the States. Sweet corn usually comes pre-cooked in plastic packaging for cooking on the occasional BBQ. I know - crazy.

    See if Maggie would be satisfied with a "catio" for her, she can go out, watch (probably in frustration) birds and passing animals, yet stay away from traffic. Some feral cats don't seem to mind as long as they have perches, toys, and of course food.
    It's scary when animals are injured, they can't tell us how they're feeling.
    My container garden is slow, even for being a semi-shaded garden. Two weeks of cool cloudy weather isn't helping. 🇨🇦

      Yes, I have a small "catio" for my 2 cats that exits thru an upper window. One cat prefers & sits out there for hours. The other I put a collar on him and walk him on a leash. He really only wants to make his "rounds" then goes back inside to the "catio" or the window bed. Takes 5 mins max.

    Hi, so glad that Maggie is recovering. Thank you so much for showing the up date of your garden. I have a question relating to sweet potatoes. I am growing it for the 1st time this year. Is it so that you can pick some of the leafs, but still harvest bulbs later on? Or is it just growing it for bulbs or for leafs?

      You can grow it for both edible leaves and tubers if you are reserved with taking leaves.

      It wouldn't work for Maggie - she's always wanted out since a tiny feral kitten and HOWLS. It would be cruel to keep her in.

    Anyone who has adopted a cat that lived outdoors will understand - you can't keep them in or your life is miserable with the whining and scratching and pawing at the door. They need their garden fix as much as we do. ha ha. I'm so glad she is ok.

      Exactly 💯 The catio brigade are well-meaning, but it's not possible. It would be cruel to Maggie and make our lives difficult. It's the equivalent of pandemic lockdown for people.
