Spectacular video. Placement of the plugs, coils shield...all shown in clarity and sounded good too. Many thanks. Also liked that you didn't wear gloves, I never do either
Thanks man you saved my butt, great video. I jacked my car up and it took about 30min to change the 3rd ignition. No way should you do it from above and a 6 cylinder.
This took me about 6 hours to complete. The passenger side is almost impossible to do from the top, but the driver side, you can take out the battery and it's quite roomy. I have big hands, and got pretty beat up good doing this. Couldn't wear gloves due to the lack of space. I would recommend using a 2" extension. The 3" gets you in some tight spots when loosening the plugs..... it pushes the wrench so close to the frame, you can't get it separated from the extension. Anyway, thanks for the video. It was really helpful.
Just curious how much I'm saving here. I had to buy some tools to do this :( Is it $300 at a mechanic for all 6 plugs replaced? Plugs were $50 dang specialty plugs (including shipping). Tools were like $50 cause apparently I lost my socket set and needed some universal joints :(
Really helpful. I wish I had a lift. One tip, slow down with the camera movement. It's a bit fast at times which makes it blurry and a little dizzying. Just some basic camera advice. Otw, great.
Even though it’s 6 years later they 3 I believe was on the right side, which is the middle cylinder (it’s definitely the middle cylinder 100%) and then 4 is on the drive side middle cylinder. I can’t remember if 4 or 3 is left or right, but 3 and 4 I know 100% are both middle cylinders.
I was going to ask the same question but looks like he doesnt answer. A shop quoted me $845 to do this. If plugs cost $40-$60, thats like $800 labor. No way I will pay this much for a 45 min job
Don't be deceived - this is a hugely challenging job for a backyard mechanic. The video doesn't talk about the back plug on driver's side (huge challenge); fails to mention how to deal with plugs that are partially seized in the aluminum heads (critical) - don't just power bar them out! Subaru recommends replacement about every 130 K miles. It's a 4 hours job (flat rate) for professional mechanic who knows what he's doing.
thats all i need to do to do a tune up? no fuel filter or anything else? i know the air filter needs to be replaced if dirty or should i just replace all that?? thanks in advance!
Yea I don't remember if the fuel filter is external on these to be honest, but if it is its a good idea to change it when the owners manual requests it. Air Filter, Make sure your coolant and transmission fluids are good to go, check your belts and hoses also. Belts should not have excessive cracks and hoses should not feel spongy or give a "Crackling" sound when squeezed, this means they are brittle and ready to leak and cause problems! That's basic maintenance.

this should never be done on this engine. Spark plugs last for the life of the engine or about 20 years
>Check your Service Handbook under Service Interval I (132000km or so I think). Definetly Interval I
I just got an H6 3.0. Thanks for the heads up on the slow progress I'm gonna have changing the coils and plugs.
you don't mentioning turning the coil packs 180* so they actually come loose from the top of the spark plug.. kinda important

in other words, just take it to a mechanic with a hoist lol
I'll be better but my mechanic charge me $200 to change it plus the spark plugs sometimes is better a dys
do you think theres enough room to do run a compression gauge down there?
I'm just going to take mine to the mechanic. Money well spent.
Watches a 4 minute video making it all look super easy, still just takes it to a mechanic lol
I have a 2005 outback 3.0r and the check engine is on. I have two codes. Misfiring detected cylinder 3 & 4. Where are cylinders 3&4?
Thanks.

How much time did you take to change all the spark plugs, includind removing all plastic protections?

For those with fat hands and no lift, get this from above, lots more space to work with.
Is it easier to do when tackling it from above?
Lu-Hiep Phan I found it much easier. I did one bank from below and one from above. I couldn't believe the difference.
Taylor Burton thanks. Gonna try this soon. Got a set of NGK Iridium on the way.
What tools did you use.
Any issues with your outback?
What is the spark plug gap!
What is the spark plug torque?
Usually about 250-300nm on the spark plugs
on the 3.6L it is 0.44" gap and 15.5ft-lbs (measured without anti-seize). I don't have the FSM for the 3.0L.
@@billyb4223 300NM would break the engine block, the correct torque is 20NM for the plugs
0.7-0.8 gap...torque is 15.2 ft lbs
on those old ej22 it would take 5 minutes total for all 4 spark plugs. I am guesstimating this job probably took 2 hours start to finish.
I just had mine done today and was billed 2 hours labour.
Any one knows, where this car's fuel filter is?

thank you. great videos by the way!
Thank you!
wonder if my 3.6 is the same way? how the heck did you not cross thread the new plugs in?
That's what delegates the pros from the rookies
Then I'm a pro lol
Does anyone know what to toque the plugs too?
15.2 ft-lb for the plugs and for the coil 11.7 ft-lb
20 n'm or 15 ft.lb. for an 03 3.0L H6
What about the 5th cylinder you skip over it
H6 3.6
I appreciate you tacking the time to post this but,Good gosh MAN!! hold the camera still. :-)
Sorry lol, this was one of the first ones I did with a go pro mounted on my head, and used fast forward for some bits
