  • Lexie and Kyle head out on an impromptu road trip with this Arcimoto FUV. The #Arcimoto #FUV #EV is a three-wheeled vehicle with roughly a 20kWh battery pack, two electric motors (FWD), and no DC Fast Charging. How will they fare on this adventure having to rely on public Level 2 infrastructure? Grab some popcorn!

    We had an absolute blast tearing it up in the FUV! The scenery was great and there will definitely be more PNW based trips coming up in the future. What an interesting reminder of old school EV road tripping relying just on Level 2… Makes you appreciate 200+kW charging from some of the new infrastructure!

      Awesome video. I have a Polaris Slingshot, show this is a very interesting automobile.
      Is this unit a development beta? I’m pretty disappointed at the charger input watts, and the range, and especially the UI/software
      I think they really need to rethink this. Needs some sort of remote monitoring, heck my $1600 eBike has a $99 boomerang, can’t believe they can’t add something similar that would cloud transmit battery and charger status.
      Needs 7.2kW 32A charging.

    The Arcimoto is a city car. It has the speed to get on an inner city loop for a few miles but its not really meant for road trips. It shines puttering around town 30-40mph. That was is its intended use scenario.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon Před 2 lety +4

      30+ miles at 75 mph. It tops out at 80. For long trips rent a car. This design can save a heck of a lot of short trips by one person in a 4 seat high speed climate controlled car. That's the point.

    As an owner of an FUV - I can confirm that efficiency drops *FAST* when going fast, or going over hills/mountains. I can get ~100 miles of range in true city driving, where I never go faster than 35 MPH, and have lots of stopping using regenerative braking.
    But highway driving, especially hilly? It drops *FAST*. When I had mine up to ~80 MPH, I was watching the battery percent count down 1% every few seconds. My guess would be no more than 20 miles range at 80 MPH. Doing 45-55 MPH over some of the same sections you drove, figure range is only 50-60 miles. I would not dare try the 80 mile stretch.
    I love my FUV - but it is absolutely *_NOT_* a "road trip" vehicle. I figure it would need a battery at least 50% higher capacity, plus CCS to have any chance of becoming usable as a road tripper. (Doesn't even need to be fast CCS - 13 kW like the Harley LiveWire would be better than the dismal 3.6 kW AC it has now.)

    • @aaronfranklin324
      @aaronfranklin324 Před 2 lety +2

      Bollocks. All you need is a three speed planetary gearbox.
      Put a 100Watt solar panel on the roof and Chuck the crap electronics in the bin. Put a proper brushed DC motor in instead. You go much faster, double your range without the panel, have unlimited range without EVER plugging in to charge
      K.I.S.S
      Keep it simple stupid.

    • @aaronfranklin324
      @aaronfranklin324 Před 2 lety

      Sheet! If you use spade switches to change your batteries from series to parallel with a brushed motor you get regenerative braking without Any crap electronics.
      And that will let you accelerate at at least 4 times the pace too. Brushed motors are quite happy putting out up to 10x their rated power for a minute or two.

    I highly recommend the Riverz hats by the San Francisco Hat Company. Nice people. My first one lasted over 15 years and is still going strong. If you want cowboy style then I suggest their "American" model. I always fasten my hat to my collar with a braided cord and a mitten clip. This is one of the reasons my first one lasted 15 years.
    I also recommend always wearing sunglasses when you are a high elevation (like Fort Collins). I used to work for the Seva Foundation. Their main gig was to travel around the world and perform free cataract operations on indigenous people who live at high altitude. The sun at high elevation is brutal on your skin and on your eyes.

    My first road trip in my BMW i3 had me stop at one of the "West Coast Electric Highway" Aerovironment stations.. There were two in the town. Both like the one you stopped at near the casino, one CHAdeMO plus one J-1772. The first one in town was outright broken. Dead. Kaput. Zero chance of charging.
    The second one I had payment issues like you. The first time it *SAID* it went through, so I walked away to go have a meal at a restaurant nearby. Came back out to….. No charge added. Had to just sit in the vehicle for a couple hours after finally getting it to work. (This one was on Mount Hood, I didn't charge to 100% because I knew I'd be going downhill after.)

    Would be nice to see an UV sun screen fitted tight to the top that would preserve the view in part and make a full days use more manageable. If not then just use sun screen and a hat. Hopefully the battery capacity was a fluke and they can improve the onboard charger. Otherwise the full range will be about all you’ll get out of this FUV in a typical day unless you’re Kyle Connor pushing the limits and staying close to lots of things to do. 😁

On your trip from Vancouver and getting to Highway 99 (to get to Dundee) you would have driven past my workplace in Tualatin and my old home in Sherwood. That charger has been at Spirit Mountain for a long time now and used to be the only charger in that area, but the charger at the quick mart (that is always ICEd) is less than a year old I think. There is still major shortage of fast chargers on the coast (CCS and Tesla), although it is improving. You should definitely come back to Oregon. As you saw, the scenery is awesome. Such a variety to see depending on where you are in the state (coast, forest, mountains, high desert)

    In Washington state helmets are required in the FUV and special three wheel drivers license.

    Its probably using pack voltage for capacity calculation which is why it jumps around so much between driving and charging its only reliable near max/min at ideal.

    Well Kyle, a belated hello from Eugene. Hope you had a nice time here . What I was wondering was the type of license you needed to take the FUV on the road. Did you need a motorcycle one or does a regular one do the trick?

      In Oregon you can use a regular license, but it's different in every state.
