Thanks for uploading it, I think I will never forget this match because it was the first time I have seen Sampras put a ball in his pocket 😳

Sampras stopped putting balls into his pocket once he signed with Nike and switched to wearing baggy shorts.

Thanks for the upload AOTV. An interesting match, better than I remember. Very close, a lot of breaks of serve in 2nd and 3rd sets. Typical of a more high bouncing court like rebound ace, despite the quality of servers on display. in his book, Sampras said if he beat Todd Martin in a slam match, he knew he was playing well.
They met seven times at all four slams. Many close matches. Head to head finished 18-4 to Sampras. Looking at this match, they are well matched. Martin has good strokes, volleys well, He's tall so places the serve well.
In my opinion the big difference between the two players is here at 08:55 The difference was movement. Early in the match, both guys nervous but Martin should have got to that forehand. But like many guys 6 ft 6, quite slow there. Sampras on the other hand was one of the fastest players around. So, the movement between the two guys is probably why it ended 18-4 to Sampras, as otherwise in every other department, they are well matched.

Martin was a real shock finalist - Edberg had been in the best form he'd been in for some time and lost their semi final in an almost identical way to how he lost the 1991 Wimbledon semi to Stitch: getting unlucky in three consecutive tiebreaks after winning the first set.

2nd best , after Federer, 2nd serve aside, Federer did everything better, add to his balance, footwork being superior to Pete’s, played almost every year, til late in his career, injury free, while Pete did not, not to mention winning the French open, which Pete never did.

@@spirg4th best, after Novak, Rafa, then Federer at 3rd. From a beauty perspective though, I agree, Fed was first.

Ah yes, Bruce Macavaney, the _all-time king_ of the pointless comment and the meaningless statistic. "Sampras hasn't lost to a US-born player for 12 months." Really? So? Is that supposed to mean something? Because it doesn't. Bruce did this junk his entire career. He shoulda just shut up and let John Alexander do the talking, which he did very well, even to putting up with Bruce's continual inanity. John Barrett was completely wasted courtside. What were they thinking?

    Bonsoir,
    Merci d'avance.
