LONDON: The search for a "Green Route" to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from Walthamstow

  • In an attempt to minimize my exposure to motor vehicle traffic, I attempted to find a "green route" of pathways and trails through parks and along canals from Walthamstow to London's new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park mixed-use community development. The first half of the ride featured some pretty decent protected/separated bike lanes, leading to a series of mostly older canal side paths until I got to the Olympic Park complex. Clearly, I caught it on a very sleepy morning with hardly any people out and about, but it was still quite cool to see all the new housing going into the area.

At timestamp 20.30 I think that the concrete lego blocks are stop cars from driving on the cycle path and to stop construction traffic.
The house boats you saw are narrow boats, they were used for transporting coal and other heavy goods along the canal network, prior to lorries/trucks being used for transport.
Good to see the weather has been kind on you, the British weather can be a bit damp! Enjoy the rest of your stay in the UK and Europe.

Yeah, that’s what I figured but really typical of car brain thinking to literally block the lane oh well. No harm no foul. Hehe 🤣
Thanks so much for tuning in and for your comments. Yes, I had a fabulous solid week in the UK. Crazy that it was already almost a month ago. Cheers! John

Nice ride! I'd like to visit Walthamstow and try out their cycling infra. Lea Bridge Road has some good cycleways, better than most urban main roads in the UK.
Regarding the traffic lights at 5:45 - there is a limitation with traffic lights in the UK where ALL pedestrian signals and ALL bike signals on separated cycleways must be fully protected when on green. Unlike in the US, here there's no concept of pedestrians/bikes getting a green together with the parallel main road and turning traffic yields; here a 'green man' means all traffic that could possibly conflict is on red. Also notice the blue and white ahead arrow on the bike signal? That means cyclists on the cycleway must go straight ahead only - this is because pedestrians and bikes get green together at that signal, so a turning cyclist would conflict with the pedestrian green, which is not allowed either, so they have banned the left and right turns for people on the cycleway.
It's a challenge here when designing a junction that incorporates a small side road in the UK - the designers have little choice but to make cyclists and pedestrians wait even though there's very little turning traffic. In reality pedestrians just cross on red (which they are allowed to do).

Yeah, the other brand new Ferry Road separated cycleway is quite nice. I'll have some videos featuring that route here on the Channel a bit later. Thanks for watching and for the comments. Cheers! John

I went to London and Edinburgh last year (loved it!). I had never seen so many people biking before that, though there are of course still way too many people in cars. It was also interesting to see how well-behaved dogs were there (like the one you pass by) and how it was typical for them to be off-leash even in city areas. Also, the flower that person was foraging appears to be Elderberry.

Ah perfect! Elderberry 🙌 thank you so much 🙏

Why do they always put hills on steep places? Can't they put hills someplace flat so you don't have to work so hard?
I like the idea of the elevated cycleway. I think the cars, bikes and pedestrians should have vertical separation to mark each one's territory.

Thanks for showing us this bike ride. Especially the path along the river seemed really nice. Are you going to Eurobike?

You are quite welcome! Unfortunately, I cannot attend Eurobike this year.

Too bad the title "Easy Rider" is already taken.
