bicycle restoration no 1 - NSU from 1955

- This is my first video on CZcams.
Many years ago I started to restore old bicycles. About one year ago I began the photographic documentation of my restorations on Instagram
(take a look @bicycle.restoration).
In the middle of April 2019 I bought a cam and started to film the restoration of a NSU touring bicycle.
It is something completely different from just taking pictures to make a video. Often you only have one chance to film the scene, so the camera settings and the position have to be done precisely.
For me this is very exciting and I will continue working on this kind of documentation.
But next time I will make everything better ;)
Another project is already in my mind, so stay tuned.
The bike is a NSU touring bike. You will find much information about this company on the internet,
so I will not tell you more about it.
The frame number is 789975, so it is probably from 1955.
If you have any further information just let me know.
Sadly the previous owner already cleaned it and removed the lightning system and the rear rack.
So the before and after effect is not that remarkably as is could be.
But I like it anyway and it matches perfect to the NSU ladies’ bicycle I already restored. You can also see it in the video or on Instagram.
You will see a full restoration. Disassembling, cleaning, repairing or replacing some parts, wheel building, making a mudflap from leather and the assembling.
My cam is a Canon Legria HF R806.
It works well for a beginner like me I think, but it has some problems with weak light.
For the next video I will try something else.
My tools are mainly from Gedore, Hazet, Wiha, Parktool and my grandfather.
If you have any questions about the video, the bicycle, the tools or the cam just ask me in the comments.
Hope you will enjoy watching my video.
Thanks to my love for all the patience.

Wonderful restoration! Thanks for complimenting the work with a great video and for the natural sounds of tools at work.
That bike sure was 'well used' over its close to 70 years of existence ! Thanks to this restoration.. probably good to go for another 70 !!
Eccellente restauro. La NSU ( nasce in Germania nel 1873) come costruttrice di macchinari per maglieria poi passerà alle bikes e proseguira' come casa automobilistica e motociclistica.Un pezzo di storia questa bike. Complimenti vivissimi. CIAO
So crazy how someone can go to such great lengths and achieve some of the most astonishing results. Truly an art form for the few. Truth be told it probably took the assembly line less time to eat lunch and build 50 of these bikes. Lol... definitely a pleasure to watch such a skillful and patient craftsman!
Yes, that was a REAL restauration, with the original pieces and the old look preserved. Bravo et salutations du Québec.
Thank you 😉
Good👍👍👍👍Nikel. 🚴Merci 👍😍,🔧Bocu

as an avid bike rider, I got no words to describe it but just masterful.
The bicycle is built heavy duty. It may last 60 years more. Very good restoration.
Thank you. It was in time for guests.
Any rappers going to be drooling over that gold chain☺️ beautiful resto 👍
Good to see you kept it all original.
I have just started riding again and until now I did not appreciate the skills of a good bike mechanic and of how complex the average bike is. I learned a lot from this video about how bikes are put together and of your skills, craftsmanship, the importance of making good what is already there and your laid back presentation. The 'bored girlfriend' was also a brilliant touch. I am sure that NSU bike will be good for another 50 years.
It's never too late to have professional pictures taken of that bicycle oh, you did a hell of a job......
The best way to appreciate it and professional pictures taken of it and then doing overall collage of before the restoration....
thank you for all your hard work and caring enough about that bicycle to do something like that and you have a very good woman there beside you it's nice that I don't know, I believe she just added a nice touch to it
🤩 this is a good example of reborn with no tuning of a true classic. This bike was a real expensive object in this time and I am glade to see it on the road again. Good job and nice tool set! Please load more !!
Brilliant to watch and learn. And thanks for not dubbing on loud rock music.
Next time you only listen and close the page pure bike porn lol
I love this video! This is focused work and can be hard at times. One of the things I enjoy doing while I work on bikes is exploring great albums from past decades, generally I used my ear buds but eventually I’ll set up my stereo with CD and records. When I hit the right album it seems to add a lot of energy to my work.
Beautiful workmanship in the detailed fittings like mudguard attachments, so worth preserving. Cotterless cranks, no pesky cotterpins! Loved NSU Badge restoration.
For me by far the best bicycle restoration i ever watched on You Tube and i have seen a lot please do more Thank You.
Thank you very much 😉
I was pleased with the respect for the past. The master did not tear and polish everything, as some do. This is truly a restoration. Thanks, really great job.
Thank you 😊
I admire and appreciate the people who bring old bicycles to life, keep it up !!!

What a beautiful restoration. Captivating and entertaining.
Thank you 😊
That was just about the most enjoyable 30 minutes of my life. Thank you.
Thank you very much, great compliment 😄
Great work! In this world you must be a kind of strange human, people do not appreciate old equipment. Congratulations with the order of your workshop.
Danke dir!
I AGREE WITH Edouard ALL THE WAY HERE. MANY PEOPLE DON'T SEEM TO APPRECIATE THE CLASSIC OLD IRON...SEEN MANY OLD BICYCLES IN JUNKYARDS...MAN, IT HURTS TO SEE THAT! i HAVE DRAGGED HOME & FIXED UP MORE BIKES FROM JUNKYARDS THAN I CAN RECALL. COLLEGE KIDS SEEM TO LOVE THE OLD BICYCLES...I REMEMBER A 1967 LADIES SCHWINN VARSITY I DRAGGED HOME AFTER SELLING A LOAD OF SCRAP COPPER BRASS & ALUMINUM...IT WAS IN ROUGH SHAPE, BUT I FIXED IT & PUT IT FOR SALE ON CRAIGSLIST...A YOUNG LADY WHO WAS AN ART MAJOR LOVED IT & SNAPPED IT UP MAYBE A DAY AFTER I PUT IT ON CRAIGSLIST...A DAY, TOPS.
A very enjoyable video to watch. The longest 5 mins I have known. lol. Love the story line.
Perfect restauration, took just a bit more than half an hour and everyone was happy 😃❤️🚲💪🍀🌞
Very Good Restoration
This is a good lesson on how to be patient to achieve a goal.thanks.we need more.
Really nicely done. I enjoyed the absence of a soundtrack. I would much rather hear rasping wire brushes, squelching grease and clinking tools. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 😊
A beautiful capsule of my favourite pastime. Riding is great fun too..😊
Nice work, got here as I have a 1955 NSU Quickly moped that I was given when I was 15, still got it nearly 40 years later!
That was really great, and I must say, your friend is very patient. 😄
In the end I was grinning so hard my face hurt. I love that bike! Love the patience and diligence.
Thank you very much 😊
excellent restoration. You gave a second life to it.
love the carpets in the workshop
Very scrumptious restoring !
N S U very nice job very worthwhile project
Absolutely mesmerising watching your video, you are indeed a true champion.
Salute to your patience and consistency man!
what a FANTASTIC JOB !!! congratulations !!!!
good job Bycycle restoration, maju terus dengan kreatifitasnya.....
we consider this presentation the highest example of a bicycle restoration . you have astounding mechanical engineering skills . your bike is killa , thank you for sharing . stay well ; ]
Thank you very much 😊
And a ton of tools
T'he best restoration i see ! Wonderful.
Nice ground up restoration....classic!!!
A beautiful love story performed by a patient woman and a patient man !
Thank you for happy ending 😭
It was pleasure to watch such fine restoration. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you 😊
Love it, didn't know NSU also made bikes. What a company.
awesome restoration with classic bike...
Bikes can last for decades if they are well maintained and loved. Good job done on this bike as its the same age as I am! I have gone electric folding Raleigh now due to health issues but I would suggest that even my new bike will last decades but in a different way. Keep up your good work
Steel is good !
@@georgeb.wolffsohn30 Yes steel is very good and I suspect that aluminium will also do the duration but wouldn't say the same carbon. I suspect that once the frames, seat posts and forks have weakened they would be unrepairable and will disappear very quickly and end up in land fill sites
Beautiful restoration! What a fabulous video. Thanks.
Marvellous stuff! Lovely old bike, you did a great job there. :)
Thank you 🤗
great video... interesting approach too... it is again functional and yet one can see that the bike has got history!
Beautiful and awesome. I’m restoring a 1967 Austrian-made Sears and Roebuck bike that looks similar to yours, minus the brake lever. I love that brake lever!! Awesome job done!!
I really enjoyed watching you work and took notes.❤️
Thank you 😊
Ich gucke mir Deine Arbeit immer wieder mal an, bin begeistert.
Besitze selbst einen NSU aus Ende der 1940er Jahren.
Alles Gute und schöne Grüße!
I love how amazingly well Vintage Bicycle's were made...some might say built to last or overly engineerd.
My first bike back in the 1970's was a slightly modernised version of a design from roughly 1940's...I remember it had curvy line's a long seat and a peddle back brake which i used excessivly leaving black mark's every where.
Great work and very nice sympathetic finish too...well done.
Thank you 😊
Many thanks. Really enjoyed that. What a beautiful piece of engineering. Love that front rod and cup (?) brake. Really good to see you just cleaned up the frame. I'm working on a war-time Raleigh at the moment. Just about got all of the rust off the wheels with the wire brush. Picked up several tips from your film and a great half hour of relaxation so many thanks again and all the best.
Soviel Liebe für das Rad. Schön.
Love those brass parts you used on your NSU 👍
Thank you for sharing this 😊
Nikel 😍 Restaoration. Merci. Bocu
N s u👍very 💯 Hood
Not sure what an NSU is but what a great display of a well done restoration.
Excellent work and video! I thought for sure the park bench was going to be empty at the end, nice to see new life put into an old bike!
Thank you! Thats true love right 😉
The video is Excellent. My Gosh you are Awesome. The work is off the charts. I do all types of work including art work. I put together my first bike because the truth is we didn't have extra money, so never thought of asking. I am currently restoring a Schwinn Cruiser Deluxe believe it to be a 1995 because I found no functioning horn in tank (Doesn't matter). I realize by seeing this video that all along I really wanted the very clean parts with the original look. I wish you was in Brooklyn ,I would have worked for you for free as an apprentice. Love , love your work.
A well balanced sympathetic restoration. Nice work
Really nice! Your healing bench is very powerful. A pleasure to watch.
Thank you 😊
Awesome work, this bicycle is awesome!
Enjoyed watching your video. You did an awsome job on a nice old bicycle. Reminds me of the one I had when I was growing up.
Thank you 😉
Truly the best restoration video I have seen. I love to see complete restorations rather than a quick clean up. Chapeau!
Thank you very much! 😇
complete restoration includes Paint...i still see the old ugly looking stuff on it o.o it works now but still looks broken^^
@Kha0sV4ktor - WRONG, you want a NEW bike, this is a restored ORIGINAL, a much more desirable item!!
Fantastic restore, glad you kept the patina. The hero gets the girl.
It's nice to watch, it's a pity that the channel is abandoned, I would really like to see new videos with the same approach
Original.unusual, which made it captivating i was in bicycle heaven for 30 mins 27 secs, can't wait to see your next patient.
Thank you 😊
Love your super-organized shop.
Oh to have a clean shop like that with nothing but the tools organized and open work space. WOW. That alone is amazing.
Thank you 😉
The restoration complements the bike perfectly you've made a fantastic job of it 👍 look forward to more of your videos, that's a hell of a tool kit you've got there btw
Thank you very much 😇
Such a nice work, thx for sharing !!
Amazing and beautiful to watch!
Thank you very much!
Great work👍 from kazhakhstan.
Восхитительная, подробная реставрация от мастера!
Perfect... the final result is exactly what is supose to be... congrats...
thats the best and most relaxed video ..full of ideas and nostalgia ...very very good , youre master in your work
Sweet. I thought you were going to do another CZcams "restoration" where they keep the frame only and put all modern parts on it with a multi gear cassette conversion and disc brakes. Nice to see an homage being done to the original condition and build.
Final touch ---》mud guard 😉👍
Great job! Both on the bike and the video. Those are all the same replacement decisions I would have made - spokes, seat, chain. Hope to see more of your vids. Very impressive tool collection too.
Thank you 😊
Great stuff! I had a Miele bike (yes, Miele, the people that make the best washing machines), also similarly old, that I restored! It was a pleasure to ride!
Also got a Miele bike with dark red colour.. Miele bikes are really something special, love them too!
@@bicyclerestoration3255 That was the colour of mine too - a dark maroon colour and the paint in remarkable condition, almost like enamel. :)
Hahahaha, "there´s no official tool for this, right", love it!
So good to see that you left the paint and patina alone. I've done a number of these restorations and the amount of work involved is not recognized monetarily. Believe me I know the elbow grease this costs. Plus you put new Schwalbe Tires on too. You did a great job. Critique? I didn't see any grease applied to the seat post on assembly. It'd been nice to see a closer to original color on the fender badge...but not sure I could do any better. My compliments! I once did a 1957 Robin Hood...it was really crusty like this one. I kept it simple and didnt spend any extra on hand grips like you did or saddle...I even used the old spokes, and chain...so maybe not "as" crusty. But I spent at least as much elbow grease as you did here. I was proud when a Raliegh Outside Sales Rep came by the shop one day and begged to buy it. I gave him a good deal and I know it found a good home with his Nottingham collection. Cheers! My name is Brian. I have a few CZcams videos. Click on my Alias Incognito and check em out...
stunning bike great job in giving it a another life
Brilliant, good job you did there, well done.
Thank you 🤗
Great restoration! It was good idea to clean and put to bicycle its old parts. Sorry, my English is too bad, but i can praise you!

Thank you! 😘
Sympathetic restoration and an unusual subject - I really enjoyed it. Very surprised that the girlfriend waited for you while you undertook the resto, but there we are!
Nice rebuilding, cleaning and personalizing this old bike! I may use some assembling order of nuts and washers for my own old front axle - think i did wrong in the first attempt😊i like your way of showing details and used tools. Greetings from Niederrhein, Kreis Wesel, Germany. Achim
Danke dir 😉
bicycle restoration Gerne, mache auch öfter aus „Alt - Neu“👍🏻in welcher Gegend bist du denn zuhause?
