  • Rich Chigga may be a rap star, meme legend, and fanny-pack icon. But he also boasts a wealth of knowledge about Indonesian food. Hoping to get a grasp on the country's cuisine, Sean Evans brings the Jakarta native to Bali Kitchen-a new destination for fast-casual Indonesian food in NYC. From rendang and nasi goreng, to the various spice levels found in sambal, Rich Chigga breaks down the Indonesian food commandments once and for all. But whatever you do, just don't call him a hot dog.

    If you crave Indonesian food, and are not in Indonesia: go to the Netherlands. They have superb Indonesian cuisine there, due to their history of colonization. You'll find several good Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam that you should visit if ever going there. Much more so, than some of the local restaurants that may just be tourist traps and not very good, imo. Like British food, not impressive! ;) You get my drift. Google when you get there and find something well-rated and go for it. There are superb Japanese restaurants, as well as Turkish ones. Amsterdam is a city for people who love food culture from all over the world!
    (Disclaimer; I'm not really claiming ALL food from the Netherlands are bland, but the most authentically cooked dishes I ate (=several) were frankly bland, imo. And my contacts in the Netherlands totally agreed with that assessment. There's some really good stuff, but the interesting part for me was eating the most authentic Indonesian and Japanese food I've ever encountered, and that happens in Amsterdam! Hands down fantastic food! And also, not completely unaffordable!)

      It's actually not that hard to learn English from other sources, especially since English is everywhere. Indonesian people consume a lot of English language media. Considering Brian is most likely brought up in the upper-middle class, he definitely also learned some basic English at school.

He was homeschooled for most of his life and helped out at his parents’ shop daily- seemed like his parents couldn’t afford to put him through school. Learnt English in his mid-teens through videos and shows. Only spoke Indonesian prior to that. Pretty impressive by any standard.

I know it's not the Nassi Goreng like real Indonesian style (less spicy), but it's simplified Nassi Goreng Dutch style. But I love it. And the noodles, you should deff buy them, they're my favorite insta noodles for sure.

      So , does Dutch-style Nasi Goreng uses soy sauce too ?

    • @mrrit
      @mrrit Před 3 lety

      @@zapperil Well, I posted this three years ago, so this going to be a long story. We actually used to make it differently. I think it was last year when I gifted my mom an Indonesian cooking master class. Ever since that day, we changed the recipe for our nasi-goreng. We now use the sweet soy sauce from ABC. It's a brand we fell in love with, and it's super easy. But we used before, different spices to make the boemboe (we call it, it's like a paste).
      Before our main ingredients was just the boemboe, and Kecap manis (ketjap manis) as a cause after it's done. But now we mix the rice and everything together with the ABC soy sauce. But we also eat it with peanut sauce, I like to make it extra spicy. But it's good too, probably not original either. But it's the beauty of food, it can be changed and adapted to flavour and taste. Do hope to visit Malaysia/Indonesia in the future, to eat all the delish food and taste it the authentic way. But it's funny, how my moms and my version of nasi-goreng still taste differently while we follow the same recipes. I guess that's that bit of love.
