      If the story didn't come in the way of my grind, I would've stomped most of the story content with Megas from the beginning, the fact that your party memory can only be increased by playing the story prevented that :D

    • @DigiMatt52
      @DigiMatt52 Před 4 lety +13

      @@Zazume_ My beef isn't that party size/memory or evolution trees and such were gated by story content, but that the core gameplay of battling and raising monsters was gated by so much fluff.
      Think of it like this - Pokemon R/B vs. Pokemon X/Y. How often did dialogue/cutscenes interrupt your flow of battling/catching in one vs. the other?
      That's what I mean.

    I played cyber sleuth on normal and found the difficulty to be pretty decent in the mid to later half of the game. First few chapter I was easily bopping bosses in a few strikes. And I do agree with the tedium of digivolving and de-digivolving. I think Digimon has great potential to surpass Pokemon in terms of game play quality if they play their cards right.

    Eh, main thing you missed was that when you de-digivolve you keep all your non-mon-exclusive skills like heal and fire spells. Since you can digivolve any digimon into any other digimon you can effectively learn all the skills on one digimon...fuhfaaagh!

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  Před 7 lety +12

    Discovered your channel recently. Loving what I've seen so far. I actually really enjoyed this title (it's my first Digimon game) and got crazy addicted to the evolution aspect of it, evolving, devolving and leveling up kept me playing. Yeah, it sucks that your digimon starts back at level 1 but those level up screens kept that dopamine flowing so even if it was a bit annoying, I still found myself feel like I was getting somewhere (since the digimon either change into something more powerful or now have higher ABI and level cap). I played the Vita version and it's just fantastic. RPGs on a handheld just feel right. It makes those "one more fight" urges easy to satisfy and probably kept me playing longer than I would have should I have purchased the PS4 version. I picked up the...sequel..ish Hacker's Memory as soon as I finished this title. Not sure if it's still available on the PSN store, I know sometimes these things get delisted on something as dead as the Vita (RIP, my lovely) but, hey, if you see it on sale somewhere for a handheld (is there a switch version?) perhaps you should give it a go.

    I can see what you mean about trimming down the intro. Though from what I read at one point, apparently they got the director of Summer Wars and Bokura no War Game to do the art design for those chat sequences, so I can see them wanting to get their moneys worth, I really like the aesthetic there. I do wish they had gone with Impmon over Haguremon, apparently he was the #2 pick for the virus slot. But he's also machinedramon's primary rookie, so kind of cool that they're being presented as a major partner in the same way as Palmon and Terriermon who have had the role in at least one anime. Too lazy to scan any code words here.

    I would consider this to be a very solid review. It's really hard to find games where there are no problems with it but the one thing I'll always appreciate about this review show is that it is not afraid to discuss the positives and negatives of whatever game the person is reviewing. I haven't played much in the way of digimon games but it is a series I am interested in trying because it fits into my mold of the type of games that I enjoy. I can't really see myself owning this game anytime soon because I haven't bought one new generation game all this year because of a crappy economy and just trying to save any amount of money that I do own. Still I'll keep this game in the back of the mind when I'm ready to jump into the current generation of gaming.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  Před 8 lety +1

      YEAH! This generation of gaming has been quite a letdown for me. It's a lot of rehashed crap, and stuff that would've worked on the previous generation of consoles. I think the only stand-out title for me has been The Witcher 3. It's not a terrible idea to wait 5 years until everything is super-cheap and catch up. That's pretty much what I plan on doing :^)

      I think that Nokia's purpose was to show someone getting stronger due to their bond with their Digimon since she went from a whining coward that is constantly panicking in important situations to hot-blooded Shounen Protagonist that basically leads the charge into enemy territory out of her sheer adoration towards Agumon and Gabumon and her desire to protect them and Digimon as a whole.
      Every other main characters was mostly focused on their relationship with human characters, IIRC.

      Less Digivolution tree fuckery, and a better story would be nice. Ultimately, there's not a lot wrong with the game. It just needs a few balancing tweaks here and there, and it's a quality experience.

    • @MACZ2021
      @MACZ2021 Před 6 lety +1

      The one thing I want to be fixed this time around is the translation. I felt it was serviceable and got the job done but if you play as the girl character the dialogue doesn't fit and assumes you're playing as the guy.
      Other than that I just hope there's less grinding involved or at least something more manageable than doing the PlatinumNumemon trick where you have 3 of that Digimon all equipped with the item that boosts how much exp you earn to where you get 9x exp, making grinding a non issue unless you're trying to get to a specific digivolution at which point you have to keep entering and exiting the Digilab every few minutes and after a while it can get tedious, but I digress.
      Something I liked a lot about the Digivolution tree stuff was how inherited skills were handled.
      I recently finished the game last week (ended up buying it last year when I got my PS4 and then I put the game on hold when i got to chapter 13 or 14 I have a bad habit of putting games on hold for a while) and it wasn't until the end of chapter 19 when I decided to stop advancing the plot and do the Royal Knight Digimon cases and the DLC cases for fighting the Seven Deadly Digimon and that's the only time I really had to grind, not because the fights were particularly hard but so I could get some if the strongest Digimon in the game like Mastemon or Lillithmon, those two along with UlForceVeedramon and Jesmon helped turn those fights into a cakewalk.
      I started doing those at about 77 hours playtime and when I was done all the cases at the end of chapter 19 I think 18 hours passed and half of the time I spent grinding was to get certain skills from one digivolution line and then going backwards until I got to a Digimon that could go back up to one of the Mega level Digimon I was looking to add to my party.
      Aside from that long spiel, I think the story could have been much better especially in the second half. The premise was cool but didn't hold up too much later on, felt like standard stuff you'd find in an anime but it could have been worse depending on how they could have executed it.
      As for Hacker's Memory, all I know about it is it takes place before and during the events of Cyber Sleuth, there's 3 different starter Digimon to choose from and there's over 300 Digimon total this time around so I'm somewhat hopeful things will turn out better this time around.

I'm never too far from a Grandia playthrough!

    I wasn´t really aware that this came out since I don´t own a Vita or PS4 yet. This will be something I will be getting when I do buy a PS4 along with Final Fantasy XV and probably some tales game.
    Does this game have digivolution trees similar to the Digimon world DS games? Based on your descriptions, it sounds just very similar, with the level caps, and having to de-generate to the previous stage to increase "Aptitude"(stat that determines level limit).
    Is the turn-based combat similar to most turn-based RPGs?
    Seems like a good game worth playing. Too bad it didn´t come out on the WiiU.

      It's almost exactly like Digimon World DS in the digivolution tree. The combat system is basically like Final Fantasy X.
      To be fair, I wouldn't release anything on the Wii U either. Dead console is dead. At least the PS4 had some sort of a sale base. I'd love a PC port though.

    I played a lot of Digimon World Dusk as a kid, so the weird systems in this game were pretty easy for me to wrap my head around. And though there were some points where I felt a bit bored, I liked the story on the whole. I liked the more focused attempt at a proper narrative, and while I could definitely see the opening being a slog in repeat playthroughs, it serves it’s purpose well for the first. There were at least a few moments where I thought the characters were being monumentally stupid (Yuuko, Nokia and Arata for specific plot reasons) but I still enjoyed them enough to want to see where those story threads landed them. They were idiots, but they were my idiots. Also, I’m so glad they removed the special exp, having to grind on a specific digimon type was a nightmare in Dusk if the only ones you could find were low yield.

      @Caspicum  Před 8 lety +15

      Building a team of mons was easily the best part. It's so fun, even if a bit grindy. I ended up using the three Platinum Sukamon with the EXP booster USBs, and getting tens of thousands of experience per battle, which made it amazingly fast. Went from In-Training to Mega in a matter of minutes. Speeding around the tree at that pace showed me how fantastic it actually is.

    • @samvimes9510
      @samvimes9510 Před 6 lety

      I'm only about halfway into the story so far (I've literally spent the last 20 hours in-game grinding) but it's neat. It's not a chronological sequel, instead it takes place directly during the events of the first one. You pal around with another hacker team and see everything that goes on in the first game from a different perspective. There's some really cool moments that fill in bits of story from the original, like when you help the Sistermons train Nokia and her digimon.
      Also I can't remember if it was in the original or not, but there's a hacker ability you can use in dungeons that doubles your running speed which is _really_ nice. Gameplay-wise though it's just more of the same, which I'm fine with.

    I still need to finish my PS4 copy. I platinumed my Japanese Vita version like a year ago, though. By the way, have you ever played the WonderSwan games? I remember playing them on an emulator back in middle school (I'm 22). They were pretty good.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  Před 8 lety

      I have never interacted with the Wonderswan in any capacity. I know there was a port of FF4 to it (At least, I'm pretty sure that was the console) but that's it.
      If there're Digimon games on it in English, I'll probably get around to it at some point. The main issue is that I can't read Japanese, and despite having bumbled through a few Japanese games in my time, I don't think it'd be fair for a review sort of format.
      Also, what's in a platinum trophy for Cyber Sleuth? Is it one of those heavy-grind Platinums, or is it fairly easy to obtain?

    • @djquinn4825
      @djquinn4825 Před 8 lety

      I think there are some fan translations for the WonderSwan games, but I don't remember since it's been quite a few years. I played them back before I knew kana (I still struggle with kanji, though), so I probably used some sort of guide. The first one was released in English in Hong Kong, so you could get that one, but it has turnbased strategy as opposed to the rpg mechanics of the sequels and I could never figure out the controls even in English, so good luck with that one.
      They star Ryo Akiyama (the Cyberdramon guy from Tamers/Season 3 if you don't remember) and explains how he went from the universe of Season 1 and 2 to the universe of Season 3 and how he got Cyberdramon. It also reveals that he had a big part in Ken's past and was the original partner for Davis's Veemon. You can actually briefly see him in Season 2 in the scene where Ken is having a dream/memory of when he got infected by the Dark Spore, as well as Milleniummon, the main antagonist of the second game.
      Cyber Sleuth was a *very* grind-heavy platinum for me. Remember that I was playing it in Japanese with only knowledge of kana, sentence structure, and a couple dozen kanji, though. Aside from having to win 30 (I think) battles on the online portion (where everyone loved spamming UlforceVeemon and his insanely high speed (I usually kept a Lilithmon on my team because her unique attack was uber strong)), there are also a few trophies that can be missed if you forget to do a certain mission or pick something up or forget to talk to someone.
      This was especially annoying in the Japanese Vita version for the trophy for collecting all 500 Digimedals, because the medals for the medals for the 7 Great Demon Lords were only given by the blonde "V" haired guy in certain chapters and there was no new game plus in that version, so I had to completely start over to get that one. You could have gotten them from some DLC missions, but you need to have a Japanese PSN account to download them, and I do, but even then a Vita can only be associated with one at a time and to change that you have to factory rest. Even then, the trophies wouldn't have been able to sink up with my American account's trophy list. I had attempted to come up with a solution to this, but it ended up being futile. ...Anyway, mini rant over.
      My best advice for the Digimedals is, aside from a guide, is in regards to the machines that give them out. Each machine gives out exactly 30 different medals, none overlapping with another machine. If you give all the medals to the collector then go to a machine, you can just use the machine until you have 30 different medals in your inventory. Also, save before using them and then, after getting several different ones, have a system of save, spend "x" amount, and if you don't get a new one reload, and if you do, as soon as you get it save again, and repeat. It's tedious, but you won't waste nearly as much money.
      Also, I believe there may be a few medals you can only get from farm generated fetch-quests. If you set a farm to search for some and then save right before the timer finishes, you can reload for different quests if you don't get the one you need. I believe the medal reward is always the same as the client as well.
      Side note after this long thing, one of the Digimedals in this game introduced me to BanchouLilymon, who is freaking awesome. She's an alternate mega for Lilymon who dresses like a banchou (duh) and uses Togemon themed yo-yos as a weapon. I had a crush on Lilymon as a kid and I've always liked female characters in stereotypical banchou style clothing, so she's pretty much a win-win to me :P
      Whew, that took forever to write. I started right after you responded too, so that gives you an idea of how slow a typist I am :P

      I guess that also goes to show how much better, or at least easier to play Cyber Sleuth is on Vita versus PS4. I would've had a lot more fun had it been on Vita, but alas, I can't justify it yet. NEEDS MORE GAMES, OR LIKE NATIVE PS2 EMULATION. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE SONY

    My main gripe with the game was the digivolving system itself. It's super convoluted and can take hours to wrap your head around.; But it is fun once you've finally figured it out. The game could have been way better if the intro wasn't long as heck and they actually took the time to show you how to navigate the system instead. I'm not necessarily for overly long tutorials, but when it's the main mechanic of your game I'd much rather you spend an hour telling me about it and showing me how to use it, than an hour of nonsensical cutscenes. I'll get back to it, it's still a fun game.

    As for the Digimon training farm part, it's a throwback to the Digimon Story games on handhelds (Story, Dusk/Dawn, Championship, ect.) so it's not really a new concept and seemed out of place to me in this game.

      If I can give any advice...
      -Don't go too heavy into grinding until you got a set of PlatinumSukamon or, later on, PlatinumNumemon. It takes some effort but Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory are more than happy to facilitate grinding with the right stuff. And by right stuff I mean being able to bump a baby digimon to a high leveled Mega in, like, 20-25 minutes tops.
      -Barring that, in Chapter 4 thiere's a mission where you can fight some ultimate leveled digimon. Completing it locks this area until later so if you just stay there you can get some decent levels.

    Welp I'm a Digimon Fanboy so for me this game was absolutely amazing. But I also have to wonder if you played the Digimon Story games for DS, because most features you complained about are actually made more accessible in this one.
    I played DSCS on vita first. Imo this game is one of the most beautiful Vita games there currently is (and probably ever will be)
    I had so much fun with my Japanese copy of the game that I bought it twice again when it got localized and had even more fun playing through on hard mode and with the 2 western exclusive Digimon and 7 new Digimon received through patching the game. I know the game is above Average. My critical side says so too. But my Fanboy-ish side absolutely loves this game.

      I did play a few Digimon games for the DS, but I can't remember if they were Digimon Story. I played World DS, and either Dusk or Dawn, I think it was Dusk.
      Oh, and Championship.
      I can't read Japanese, so I never played Xros Wars.

      Casp O'saurus Digimon World DS and Dusk/Dawn are story games.They changed the name in the west to world for some reason.

    I enjoyed Cyber Sleuth and Hackers Memory however, I feel there are things they could work on to make the next games better.
    1. Like Pokemon take us to other countries outside of Japan. I'd love to see not only US but Australia and Egypt and so much more.
    2. To make the game more mature forgo the swearing and show that there are consequence for disputable actions. (I.e in Hackers Memory Ryuji should have been arrested or taken to a mental hospital but instead thanks to the world reset he got off the hook.) Show teens and adults that there are consequences for these things. More thoughts from other folks here that brought up some good points: @t
    3. English/Spanish and other language dubbing.
    4. More Digimon only 340 were in both Cyber Sleuth games for the Nintendo Switch version. If they can't put in all the Digimon they should have put at least halve in there I hear there's over 1000 or so. So not even 500 is disappointing.
    5. More clothing options. Thought it was dumb to not have the Cyber Sleuth OC not able to were a Jacket like the character in Hackers Memory.
    6. Copy and past dungeons and not enough background detail for the server dungeons. Kalwoon looked like it was ripped right out of Disneys Tron series as well so much blue.
    I'd give this game 8/10 would recommend some things of course need work.

    Would you play the sequel hacker's memory? I think both games have the same game mechanics and you said you was glad to experience this game once, but you wouldn't play it a second time.

    Difficulty is strange, i made a mod on pc that is between the 1.0 and 1.5 of hard, original 2.0 on hard.
    Unironically piercing attacks break the game to the point where not using them is throwing.

    You should do a video on the 2 newest games
    Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth- Hackers Memory’s on the PS4 and Vita it’s a sequel/expansion
    And Digimon Links on the Android/iPhone!
    I’m sure you’ll get tones of view from them

      Casp definitely np, as im currently grinding the crap out of Hackers memory, got a lot of super ultimate already and most megas, major down fall is the crazy 3 hours of talking in the slow beginning and the vaguely told directions on where to go for the mission in the game and way too much talking all to geather but over all it’s much like the first game...
      Where as Digimon links is basically a sequel to Cyber Sleuth but not really as it takes most elements from Cyber Sleuth... I think bandi/namco saw the cash grab in the popularity and neatalga they decided it was a great way to get the fans to invest into the micro transactions...
      There’s also a MMO witch is actually pretty good but I think it too heavily pay to play but you can grind heavily to still bet the game, you probably should look into that one too.
