  • Anticipation is massively important skill to learn to become a safe driver. This video highlights what to look for when a cyclist or any other road user looks over their shoulder.

On the road, drivers tend to see cyclist and cars. We remember that the cyclist is a person, but we depersonalize the other drivers and see them as cars instead of people.
It's hard to catch other drivers in dashcam videos, but I hope you can do a video showing the importance of looking that other drivers in order to anticipate what they are going to do. I've saved my bacon a few times by watching a driver's head instead of his car.

The more I watch your clips Ashley im convinced there must be more than just you teaching people how to drive, not just how to pass a test.

Passed test in April, driving since then, but still find all these videos really helpful, still watching them

Great videos Ashley. Cyclists are a major issue where I live. Many cyclists have absolutely no road sense/awareness at all and you can tell. If cyclists had to do cycling proficiency, there would be less incidents involving them

Excellent example from the cyclist in the first clip. Very well done there.

As a cyclist and also as a driver this is a fantastic tip.
Although for drivers please don't assume that every cyclist will look over their shoulder as unfortunately this is not always the case.

as well as the fact that for some it doesn't mean they're changing direction, he could have easily gone around the parked vehicles and checked to see if it was safe to do so, or in a different scenario if he was planning on slowing down and checking that nothing behind him could go into him.

In the first instance, I will be totally honest and say that the cyclist cutting through the pedestrian path surprised me. Yes, he did look over his shoulder (three times) and this is a good indication that a person is planning something but in that particular instance I was expecting him to move to at least position three in lane one yet probably position one in lane two due to the parked cars in lane one.

I never do that as a cyclist but is a shame that others do. Incites hatred of cyclists.

My test was meant to be Wednesday ( 22nd) and I was all set to do it .
However I had a lesson the hour before my test time with my instructor, at the end of the lesson ( roughly 15 mins before test) he said I wasn’t allowed to sit my test “ because i want ready “ .. surely he would have known that weeks before my test and would have said to me to cancel it .. why did he wait till 15 minutes before test to cancel ? .. I’ve now lost £112 because of him ( £62 for test, £25 for lesson and £25 for the hire of the instructors car for the test WHICH I DIDNT SIT )
I have been told to report him to dvsa and trading standards as surely I am entitled to my money back for at least the hire of the car ? Am I wrong ?
Btw I was binge watching all ur videos the night before and found them really helpful !

That's terrible Hannah. I would take advice from Trading Standards and definitely complain to the DVSA (You could start this process by making your complaint to the test centre manager). I would also consider taking him to the Small Claims Court. www.gov.uk/make-court-claim-for-money . It's actually quite simple to do, but my guess would be when you serve him with the paper he will immediately panic and refund you. There is no way I would stand for that from any of my instructors. Please let me know how you get on. Ashley

Hannah Birse another thing Hannah. Try approaching him or the company he works for first. Most of the time this will get a good result. Then take it further if you have no joy. Good luck 👍

Thanks so much ! I will do! I take it though I’ll never get my test money back as that wasn’t paid to him
