    Pro-tip: If you're planning on creating one at home, make sure you do not collect rocks near any water source (they can heat up, causing stored water to steam and the rock to explode)
    Source: Been there, done that while camping

    Just a couple fyi's. Porous river stones can explode when heated if they've not been thoroughly dried before use. Galvanised/zinc coated steel can give off dangerous fumes when heated. This gel stuff doesn't look like it burns hot enough to burn the zinc, but it pays to be aware of these things.

    Don't use river rocks for this, the moisture inside can cause them to explode.

      good call. That flame would need be really intense to get the water to steam, no? low temp would dry the rocks, eliminating the steam explosion, no?

    I would not use rocks in a fire pit. Rocks can explode if there is any moisture inside them. Get some lava rocks for fire places if you want but don't use rocks you find on the ground.

  • @Silverado1st

    Thanks for the great vid and info! I was trying to find out if the gel fuel could be spread out over a larger area than the can it comes in or to use in an ethanol fire place that has the long rectangle shape burner. Seems like all the warnings say only used the can it came in bla bla bla for safety reasons. Of course there gonna play it safe. Gel is still dangerous if splattered while burning, the Veteran in me wants to use agent orange as an example, you cant just brush it off if it gets on you, that just spreads it out further, best way is to cover it up or baking soda, but if people have half the pucker factor I have when using open flames, should be ok. Someone also mentioned, but good to know that certain materials like stone, rocks, ceramics can "pop" when heated, just like large pieces of pottery being fired in a kiln, if you don't get all the air pockets out of the clay, it could explode in the kiln. There was a mega recall of ceramic gel fire bowls years back, not because of exploding, but because someone tried to refill the bowl when it wasn't cooled down enough and it flashed back and burned 25% of there skin because they tried to brush it off, which made it worse. So there still pretty safe as long as you take precautions and use a bit of common sense. Thanks again for the vid, got exactly what I needed to know!

    • @TheProSail
      @TheProSail Před 10 lety +1

      I've never heard anything like that. Why would they? It wouldn't be so common to secure firepits with stones if they did. I even think that rocks were sometime in the past used in heat systems as they give heat back very slowly. So I think that nothing unexpected should happen.

    • @ssholum
      @ssholum Před 10 lety +4

      The danger is only there if you heat the rocks too quickly or they cool down too quickly. Basically, unless you use thermite as fuel or throw the hot rocks into a bucket of ice, it should be safe.
      However, if you're really worried, you can purchase stone specifically sold for fire pits or their thermal glass equivalent; these products are designed to be heated, so they are screened for weaknesses (micro-fissures that might cause shattering during expansion/contraction) before sale.
      Besides, fire pits don't get that hot anyway. Unless your pit is a bonfire, I don't think it'll get hot enough to cause problems in the first place.
